  Maya West Writing Project
        June 2009
• I teach at S.U. Martín Hernández School,
  in Aguada.
• I teach English to Kinder, First, Second,
  Third and Fourth graders.
• I have been teaching for fifteen years.
• I have been the Director of the Programa
  de Escuela Abierta for 3 years.
• I have a Masters Degree in English as a
  Second Language from the Inter American
  University of San German.
My Classroom
My School
My Community
     The community in which I
      work is very well known
      for their hard work. The
      majority of the men work
      as fishermen and women
      stay home to take care of
      their children. Many of
      them have not finished
      high school. They live in
      low income housing. They
      do try to help their kids to
      do good in school.
My Philosophy
• I do believe that all students have
  the capacity to learn using their
  multiple intelligences. So I provide
  multiple strategies of teaching so
  each students can have the
  opportunity to learn in their own
  individual way.
Learning Theory
• The theory of multiple
  intelligences proposed by Howard
  Gardner in 1983. Gardner's theory
  argues that intelligence, particularly
  as it is traditionally defined, does not
  sufficiently encompass the wide
  variety of abilities humans display.
Approach
The Free-Writing Approach
 This approach stresses writing
 quantity rather than quality.
 Free writing on given topics with only
 minimal correction.
 The emphasis is on content and
 fluency rather than on accuracy and
 form.
Teaching Objective
 After reading and discussing the
 story My trip to the Beach, students
 will observe a picture, make a list of
 words related to it and write at least
 five sentences about the picture.
 W.3.4, W.3.5
This activity is for Third Grade
 Students
Duration: One Day
My Activity

1. Make a list of everything you
see in the picture. Lists can help
learners generate vocabulary
and provide the basis for larger
pieces.
Freewriting
2. Using the list you generated, write
something about the picture. It can
be any of the following:
A paragraph describing the picture
A story
An experience you had or
Anything you want to write about the
picture.
"They may forget what you
said, But they will never forget
  how you made them feel."

  • 2. • I teach at S.U. Martín Hernández School, in Aguada. • I teach English to Kinder, First, Second, Third and Fourth graders. • I have been teaching for fifteen years. • I have been the Director of the Programa de Escuela Abierta for 3 years. • I have a Masters Degree in English as a Second Language from the Inter American University of San German.
  • 5. My Community The community in which I work is very well known for their hard work. The majority of the men work as fishermen and women stay home to take care of their children. Many of them have not finished high school. They live in low income housing. They do try to help their kids to do good in school.
  • 6. My Philosophy • I do believe that all students have the capacity to learn using their multiple intelligences. So I provide multiple strategies of teaching so each students can have the opportunity to learn in their own individual way.
  • 7. Learning Theory • The theory of multiple intelligences proposed by Howard Gardner in 1983. Gardner's theory argues that intelligence, particularly as it is traditionally defined, does not sufficiently encompass the wide variety of abilities humans display.
  • 8. Approach The Free-Writing Approach This approach stresses writing quantity rather than quality. Free writing on given topics with only minimal correction. The emphasis is on content and fluency rather than on accuracy and form.
  • 9. Teaching Objective After reading and discussing the story My trip to the Beach, students will observe a picture, make a list of words related to it and write at least five sentences about the picture. W.3.4, W.3.5 This activity is for Third Grade Students Duration: One Day
  • 10. My Activity 1. Make a list of everything you see in the picture. Lists can help learners generate vocabulary and provide the basis for larger pieces.
  • 12. 2. Using the list you generated, write something about the picture. It can be any of the following: A paragraph describing the picture A story An experience you had or Anything you want to write about the picture.
  • 13. "They may forget what you said, But they will never forget how you made them feel."
