In this paper, I analysed the main characteristics of the South African Welfare State in terms of inputs and outputs of the key policies usually identified by the literature to be useful to exploit a demographic dividend. In particular, I focused on the state of the labour market, the social assistance policies and the education and healthcare systems. To do this I studied some quantitative indicators of both inputs and outputs and I reported the qualitative analysis of some other articles of these individuals sectors. The conclusion is that, despite some important progress made by the democratic governments, there are many improvements needed to create a consistent and inclusive growth.

The allocation of most of the budgetary resources of the Brazilian government (45%) for the payment of interest and amortization of public debt is unsustainable in the medium and long term because Brazil would not have public resources to invest in economic and social infrastructure and transfer resources to social security and to the states and municipalities. In addition to the domestic public debt that compromises the future of the country, the foreign debt in the amount of US$ 523.7 billion in June 2016 that exceeds US$ 379 billion of the country's reserves increases further the economic vulnerability of Brazil. Taking into account the risk that Brazil may face in the future with the "explosion" of domestic and external debt, it is urgent to carry out an audit of the debt and its renegotiation in order to stretch it in time to reduce the country's burden of payment service of these debts. Without the adoption of this policy, the Brazilian government will have to make foresight social reform to the detriment of the population and privatize public assets as is being advocated by the government Michel Temer.

Using investigative methods of human feelings of wellness via direct survey of economic, environmental, physical, mental, workplace, social and political wellness metrics, the theme of the research underpins the determination of linkages between policy and strategies and civic en-gagement to spawn social protection mechanisms. The research is predicated on developing tools for stemming the stresses and shocks administered by the degree and speed of impoverishment that has posed enormous challenges for nations and peoples. The influence of global competition, social re-engineering, political and military conflicts and power shifts exert enormous pressure on the psyche of the average individual and family. The results from the survey were computed using the seven satisfaction metrics. While more has changed in the last decade technologically, culturally, politically and economically than the entire past century, responses from key informants by and large show a general level of life satisfaction among the selected population of lowest to highest incomes categories, using the Gross National Happiness approach. Life wellness measurement fares better compared to Gross Domestic Product as it shows satisfaction level and helps self-targeting in public works designed as employment generating safety nets.

The International Research Initiative on Brazil and Africa (IRIBA)

This paper brings a multidimensional analysis of poverty and inequality in Brazil by presenting data for key indicators in recent years, exploring the main policies that contributed to or hindered progress, and indicating challenges and possible ways forward. Despite very significant advancements in recent years, Brazil still faces severe problems and urgent challenges. By looking at the reality of income, jobs, taxation, health, education, land distribution, food and nutrition, and citizen participation in the country, the analysis presented here outlines areas where structural changes or specific policies are still needed, and also points to ways of perfecting successful initiatives already in place. This is important not only because Brazil still has a long way to go in terms of poverty and inequality reduction, but also due to the country’s growing influence in the international arena. Either by governmental engagement in bilateralism and multilateralism, or by activities of private actors supported (or not discouraged) by the government, Brazil’s development model already has significant impacts on other countries, especially in Latin America and Africa. Naturally, in one single paper it is not possible to explore all the factors examined here with the level of detail that they deserve. However, it is possible to present an overall picture, point to the most significant trends, and indicate key areas of concern for those who are willing to promote social justice – helping to draw comprehensive frameworks for action.

The Michel Temer government adopted a recessive economic policy seeking to limit government spending with its proposal for amendment to the Constitution (PEC 241-2016) sent to Brazilian Congress. The measures proposed in PEC 241-2016 define new “ceiling” for public spending which will limit the prior year spending adjusted for inflation and this fact will cause public health and education spending are frozen in real terms going to be just corrected by inflation. It should be noted that with low consumption (C), low investment (I) and low government spending (G), the economy tends to further deepen the recession and make it harder to return to economic growth. To combat the economic recession, the Michel Temer government should, in the short term, increase government spending to compensate the drastic reduction occurred in household consumption and private investment.

In the thrilling conclusion to 2023, ransomware groups had a banner year, really outdoing themselves in the "make everyone's life miserable" department. LockBit 3.0 took gold in the hacking olympics, followed by the plucky upstarts Clop and ALPHV/BlackCat.
