- Crossrail is the largest infrastructure project in Europe.- Our aim is to build a world class railway for London and the South East and to build it on time and on budget whilst adhering to the very highest standards of safety. The Crossrail route will run 118 kilometres from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west, through new twin-bore 21 kilometre tunnels below central London to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the eastA total of 28 existing Network Rail stations will connect to seven new stations in the central area, to be built at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel and Canary Wharf.
Crossrail is using 8 bespoke Tunnel Boring Machines to construct tunnels42 km of tunnels underneath central London at depths of up to 40m, weaving above and beneath existing structures such as tube lines and sewers
Our TBMs are tunnelling under London at a rate of 100m per week Complexity - TBMs need to avoid the extensive and varied existing buried infrastructure below LondonRisks – Time, Cost, Technical challenge all balanced while ensuring safety remains the number one priority at all timesMinimise impact on day to day London life - as you can see from this aerial shot of our Paddington worksite, our sites are incredibly close to working infrastructure, businesses, and residents. It will reinvigorate the depleting workforce and raise safety standards across industry.Up to 3500 workers to be trained at TUCACrossrail is committed to apprenticeships as a valuable route to employment. More than 400 apprenticeships will be created through the Crossrail supply chain. To date over 195 apprenticeships have been created on the project.

Wallasea Island: A truly innovative solution to dealing with Crossrail’s excavated material:RSPB scheme to transform, in a phased and managed way, 620 hectares of arable farmland into the coastal marshland it once wasThe newly restored landscape will be a wetland mosaic of mudflats and saltmarsh, shallow lagoons and pastures, providing much needed habitat for wildlifeThe first excavated material has been transported to Wallasea Island where work has begunCompletion expected between 2015 and 2016
Although a predominantly London based project, opportunities to work on Crossrail are spreading across the UKBenefits are spread around the country through the supply chain. This map demonstrates our supply chain and how it has spread across the country.Note: This slide is animated and contains large files which may be slow to transition.
Crossrail are working hard to be an informed client, during procurement and delivery.Listening to the supply market before we even begin procurement to ensure we create a sustainable supply chain by taking on board industry feedback.Open and transparent with regards to the Crossrail pipeline of procurements and winning contractors.Actively encourage and in some areas mandate tools to ensure the lower tiers of the supply chain know what opportunities are arising, when and how to engage.Crossrail take a programme view and recognise that we are buying a supply chain to deliver the programme.
Supply chain opportunities still emerging from our large civils contracts, although the largest number will be in relation to the Stations contracts which are just gathering pace and have a long way to go.These will also lead to many opportunities in mechanical and electrical trades as the railway systems begin to mobilise – these tier 1 contracts have only recently been awarded.
CRL are creating business opportunities and supporting jobs and companies of all shapes and sizes from all over the country. It is vital that companies from right around the UK continue to make the most of the tens of thousands of business opportunities that will arise over the course of the project. CRL embarking on a series of national and regional engagement events in the coming months to promote CRL supply chain opportunities.2 in 5 supply chain opportunities are being picked up by companies outside London and South East.Almost 60% of CRL supply chain organisations are SMEsCRL has let some of the largest value contracts in recent UK construction history – providing a much needed boost to UK industry and creating major employment opportunities. During the construction phase alone, Crossrail will generate thousands of jobs, it will also draw upon the services of manufacturers and other suppliers based throughout the UK.
Crossrail Supply Chain is wide and complex – example to demonstrate the number of opportunities generated by CRL in the supply chain. This is a real example of how one Crossrail contract (C503 – Liverpool St Stn. Advance Works) let to a major Tier 1 contractor (VINCI) leads to multiple supply chain opportunities. The Tier 1 contractors seeks a subcontractor at tier 2.The tier 2 subcontractor requires 12 different tier 3 organisations to provide the with goods and services to fulfil their order. Some of these tier 3 supplier require tier 4 suppliers. The net result is that in this example one tier 2 subcontract results in 19 further UK supply chain opportunities (other examples show greater or lesser multipliers down to tier 5!).97% of Crossrail opportunities are being met within the UK supply chain. The majority of the tier 2 contracts are yet to be procured leaving many UK supply chain opportunities available to UK businesses.
CRL engage via existing trade associations and business networks:Ensures fair and transparent engagementAllows for targeted engagement of relevant organisationsEfficient communicationGood supply intelligenceToday’s event has organisations from ELBP, CECA and CPA
