Climbing the Ladder
DaklaPack's transition into the healthcare field was driven
by several innovations and patented products that the team
developed in the early 2010s. The company's Rigid Safety
Bag, which combines a leakproof bag with absorption
material and a rigid layer, allows for medical specimens to
be shipped via the postal and parcel networks inside of a
small flexible mailer instead of the traditional cardboard
box. This makes that specimen can be shipped more cost-
effective, easier and safer.
In addition, the packaging solution can be easily and
quickly opened by the receiver (often medical laboratories).
"It were innovations like these that drove us into the
medical field, and primarily the at-home specimen
collection market. Our core business changed from
packaging supplies to medical kitting and 3PL services,"
adds Klaassen.
Packaging Products and Solutions
DaklaPack specializes in high-quality packaging products
and solutions for various industries, primarily in the
medical field, food packaging and industrial packaging. Its
focus in the food and industrial fields is on niche products,
often the more technical solutions. "For example, we have
developed a disposable bioreactor that is currently used in
potato cultivation. These type of projects is what we
specialize in," says Klaassen.
He continues, "Over the years our medical business has
grown substantially and we run some of the largest medical
kitting projects globally, such as the French and the Dutch
population-wide colon cancer screening programs. In the
past years, we have shifted our focus more and more toward
medical kitting and we offer a wide range of related
services."
"For most of our kitting clients, we assist in the (technical)
design of their collection kit and the procurement of
materials. We can assemble kits on three continents and
provide warehousing and order fulfillment services. In
Europe, we also operate a medical laboratory, which can be
leveraged by our kitting customers who want to expand
their operations into Europe."

segment, we apply a hybrid project management method.
We have seen this is the most effective approach to
managing the complexity of kitting projects, which includes
various process flows," explains Klaassen.
"From the start we apply a consultative approach, enabling
our customers to utilize our vast experience and know-how
in the design of their products and processes. We typically
have several brainstorming sessions with our clients after
which our team produced several samples of the various kit
concepts our customers are interested in. Once a final
design has been determined we work out a quotation, which
typically includes all related costs to having these kits
made, stored and shipped."
He continues, "After the order is placed, we procure and
produce all required components and schedule kit assembly.
Simultaneously our IT team helps to enable our customers
to integrate with our ordering systems, through APIs or web
portals. Once the first kits have been assembled and
shipped, we usually enter an ongoing process in which we
keep in close contact with our customer to ensure
operations run smoothly and as expected."

DaklaPack has its facilities and procedures certified to
international standards such as ISO9001; ISO27001;
FSSC22000 and is in the process of obtaining ISO13485
certification on its US and European facilities.

their home. As there is no need for medical professionals to
be involved with the specimen collection this also reduces
the overall costs of diagnostic tests," emphasizes Klaassen.
In the medical packaging field, sustainability also presents
challenges. Safe and robust packaging and sustainability
can be tricky to balance, especially in the medical field.
When compared to the food and industrial sectors changes
usually take much longer in the medical field as changes
need to be thoroughly validated before being put into effect.
"To move to a more sustainable way to pack sterile medical
products and at the same time not negatively affect the
properties of the product, while keeping the costs down as
much as possible will be a big challenge for the coming
years," he adds.

mechanisms, companies are focusing on changing the
packaging according to the odds it faces including
temperature fluctuations, vibration, tearing, shock, etc. Not

handling, shipping, transportation, and usage.

opportunities is artificial intelligence.
As human beings, our biggest inspirations have been
characteristics of ours, like kindness, perseverance, and so
on. Similarly, we have been inspired by the intelligence, so
much so that we are trying to replicate its concept in the
form of technology. By understanding the cognitive and
neuroscientific processes behind intelligence and computing
them, we have been able to advance the field of artificial
intelligence with applications in a number of areas, as well
as newer approaches to data conceptualization & analysis,
machine learning, and robotics.
Coming full circle, advancements in AI have played a major
role in the growth of neuroscience as a discipline of
research and application. Advanced AI systems can help
drive neuroscience forward to unlock the neurobiological

Speaking of novel tools from AI that can broaden and
formalize our understanding of neural function, another
interesting use of such techniques has been demonstrated by
biomedical engineer Chethan Pandarinath from the Georgia
Institute of Technology. To enable people with paralyzed
limbs to reach out and grasp with a robotic arm as naturally
as possible, he turned to AI.
He fed brain-activity recordings to an artificial neural
network and tasked it with learning how to reproduce the
data. The effort revealed the brain's temporal dynamics —
the way that its pattern of neural activity changes from one
moment to the next — thereby providing a more fine-
grained set of instructions for arm movement than shown
by previous methods.

The aforementioned examples are only two out of the
thousands of studies and applications that have been carried
out, driven by the intersection of AI and neuroscience. This
relationship has also facilitated massive developments in
improving the scope of medical imaging and diagnostics
with superior data capturing and pattern recognition.
In keeping with this, the potential to compute brain
structures and functions, such as neurotransmitter pathways
of white matter lesions, can greatly aid neurology and
psychiatry. AI and deep learning can help optimize different
brain structures and carve pathways to treatment by
enhancing the understanding of neural impulses relayed
from and within the brain. Creating virtual 3D brain
structures has also become possible, and this can give an
impetus to further research and discoveries in neuroscience,
along with fostering a new environment for medical
training.
The future of AI and neuroscience is even more exciting.
Recent efforts to understand and reverse engineer the brain's
ventral visual stream, a series of interconnected cortical
nuclei responsible for hierarchical processing and encoding
of images into explicit neural representations, have shown
great promise in the creation of robust AI systems capable
of decoding and interpreting human visual processing, as
well as performing complex visual intelligence skills
including image recognition, motion detection and object
tracking.
Neurocognitive robotics is another up-and-coming field,
which, as talked about above in the research by
Pandarinath, can revolutionize exoskeletons and robotic
surgeries with the help of transfer learning techniques.

behaviors, the prognosis of disorders, and calibrating

have on each other. In the future, the synergy between the
two should be expected to increase incrementally. The
