We present some of the current trends at different research topics in PHY layer and system level analysis. We cover some aspects of the wireless channel for mmWave and talk about candidate bands with nice multi-path and non line-of-sight properties for cellular communications. We discuss about critical resource management techniques and how they can be applied for mmWaves. For cellular communications, the presentation explains that beamforming and scheduling depend on channel estimation, the geometry of the antenna array, the transceiver architecture, and the interference from adjacent cells. We also describe some of the main issues due to mobility and mention how centralized management can be used to avoid waste of resources and group base stations for coordinated operation. Finally we mention some of the most promising techniques to achieve load balance in heterogeneous networks. Check out the video link in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmGnoXW5wr0

This article presents a design of wavelength division multiplexing/ Time division Multiplexing (WDM-TDM) in passive optical network with a data rate of 10 Gbps. The implementation has been carried out for varying link distance from 40km to 100km for 4 different wavelengths with a maximum of 32 supporting users with two different receiver photodiodes. The parameters such as BER and the Q-factor for PON network is being analyzed with the link distance. The BER is decreased as the distance of the network is increased when using the APD receivers than PIN receiver. Optimal value of BER is obtained for a distance of 97 Km in APD and 96 Km in pin receiver.

3GPP is going to finalize the 5G standard by 2018. 5G is scheduled to launch in around early 2020s. Even if it is not determined yet regarding the standard technology details, many researchers expect that 5G will transfer 1000 times more data, and thus, can connect billions of IoT (Internet of Things) devices at the same time. Massive MIMO (multiple input and multiple output) is one of the key candidate technologies that enable 5G to support IoT devices connection. Massive MIMO (MaMi) technology can address the high capacity requirement demanded by 5G exploiting many antennas both in the transmitter and the receiver.

Achieving repeatable wireless throughput measurements under realistic conditions has been a monumental challenge for the wireless industry. The reason? Throughput of wireless links is a function of many variables, all of which must be controlled to get repeatable measurements. For benchmark testing, throughput has to be maximized in a manner that is repeatable and reproducible at multiple labs around the world. The challenges and methods of achieving maximum possible throughput and repeatable measurements are the subject of this talk.

The innovative and effective use of information and communication technologies (ICT) is becoming increasingly important to improve the economy of the world [1]. Wireless communication networks are perhaps the most critical element in the global ICT strategy, underpinning many other industries. It is one of the fastest growing and most dynamic sectors in the world. The European Mobile Observatory (EMO) reported that the mobile communication sector had total revenue of €174 billion in 2010, there- by bypassing the aerospace and pharmaceutical sectors [2]. The development of wireless technologies has greatly improved people’s ability to communicate and live in both business operations and social functions. The phenomenal success of wireless mobile communications is mirrored by a rapid pace of technology innovation. From the second generation (2G) mobile communication system debuted in 1991 to the 3G system first launched in 2001, the wireless mobile network has transformed from a pure telephony system to a network that can transport rich multimedia contents. The 4G wireless systems were designed to fulfill the requirements of International Mobile Telecommunications-Advanced (IMT-A) using IP for all services [3]. In 4G systems, an advanced radio interface is used with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), and link adaptation technologies. 4G wireless networks can support data rates of up to 1 Gb/s for low mobility, such as nomadic/local wireless access, and up to 100 Mb/s for high mobility, such as mobile access. Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and its extension, LTE-Advanced systems, as practical 4G systems, have recently been deployed or soon will be deployed around the globe. However, there is still a dramatic increase in the number of users who subscribe to mobile broadband systems every year. More and more people crave faster Internet access on the move, trendier mobiles, and, in general, instant com- munication with others or access to information. More powerful smart phones and laptops are becoming more popular nowadays, demanding advanced multimedia capabilities. This has resulted in an explosion of wireless mobile devices and services. The EMO pointed out that there has been a 92 percent growth in mobile broadband per year since 2006 [2]. It has been predicted by the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF) that 7 trillion wireless devices will serve 7 billion people by 2017; that is, the number of network-connected wireless devices will reach 1000 times the world’s population [4]. As more and more devices go wireless, many research challenges need to be addressed.

Multicarrier modulation can be implemented by using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) to achieve utmost bandwidth exploitation and soaring alleviation attributes profile besides multipath fading. To support delay sensitive and band bandwidth demanding multimedia applications and internet services, MIMO in addition with other techniques can be used to achieve high capacity and reliability. To obtain high spatial rate by transmitting data on several antennas by using MIMO with OFDM results in reducing error recovery features and the equalization complexities arise by sending data on varying frequency levels. Three parameters frequency OFDM, Spatial (MIMO) and time (STC) can be used to achieve diversity in MIMO-OFDM. This technique is dynamic and well-known for services of wireless broadband access. MIMO if used with OFDM is highly beneficial for each scheme and provides high throughput. There are several space time block codes to exploit MIMO OFDM; one of the techniques is called Alamouti Codes. The paper investigates adaptive Alamouti Codes and their application in IEEE 802.11n.

This paper presents the characteristic MIMO 2x4 antenna for 5G communication system. The proposed antenna works at 28 GHz and simulated by using CST simulation software. The antenna uses RT Duroid 5880 substrate with dielectric constant of 2.2. The MIMO antenna consists of eight elements with rectangular patches and inset feeding. Thedimension of patch (Wp x Lp) is 6 mm x 8 mm. There are three (3) antenna configurations derived in this paper such as; single element, 1x4 elements and 2x4 elements. The MIMO 1x4 elements antenna configuration is designed based on the single element antenna with the distance between center to center elements antennas of 5 mm. The MIMO 2x4 antenna is formed from the MIMO 1x4 element configuration with the opposite direction. The 2x4 element antenna, a distance between opposite antenna elements is 10 mm. From the simulation results, it is shown that by increasing the number elements of antenna affect to the directivity and the return loss. Antenna with 2x4 elements has 14 dBi of directivity with the return loss of -19 dB. While antenna with 1x4 elements, the directivity obtained is 14.3 dBi with return loss of -18 dB.

In the present thesis, the concept for beyond 3G mobile radio systems is described. A service area concept is introduced in order to combat the performance limiting interferences present in the cellular mobile communication systems, with each service area consisting of a various simultaneously active mobile terminals, a number of fixed access points and a central unit per- forming signal processing. About uplink transmission, the main characteristic of this service area system is that with the aid of joint detection of the transmit signals from the mobile ter- minals performed at uplink transmission, all interferences between the simultaneously active mobile terminals using the same bandwidth is drastically reduced. Moreover the use of OFDM subcarrierwise in the described service area based system allows for intersymbol interference free communication and for simple equalization in the frequency domain. Through this subcarrierwise equalization the service area based system is equivalent with a number of smaller parallel systems, a fact that affects in a reduced computational complexity in the case of optimum multiuser operating with the maximum likehood principle and subop- timum linear detector zero-forcing. In this thesis the parallel interference cancellation detector is introduced, according to which the multi access interference is iteratively reconstructed and subtracted from the received signal. Parallel interference cancellation detector is compared in terms of performance with suboptimum linear detector, due to the reduced computational com- plexity. Using standardized COST 207 channel models, the performance of parallel interference can- cellation detector compared with suboptimum linear detector has been investigated for a frozen channel, with the same snapshot using the same parameters of the channel, as well as for a number of system loads. A fact that can be observed in simulations results is that parallel in- terference cancellation detectors could achieve the same performance with a reduction of the complexity as suboptimum linear detector zero-forcing in the case of no estimate refinement and with estimate refinement by hard quantization depending on the load system. With esti- mate refinement by soft quantization the performance of the parallel interference cancellation detector is improved, having better performance than zero-forcing detector in cases with nor- mal load. Moreover with the improvement raised in this thesis, in this normal system load, the performance is more improved. On the other hand in the case of full load system, the PIC detector can not substract all the multi access interference producing error flow, this thing is not too important taking in account that the fully loaded system case should not be never present.

Massive MIMO in TDD wireless networks depends crucially on channel reciprocity, which can be established by calibration. Existing calibration approaches, however, have been proven to be impractical for deployment in 5G NR and 802.11. This presentation introduces terminal-assisted calibration, which is shown to overcome the drawbacks of existing approaches and to enable various massive MIMO modes in 5G NR and 802.11.
