What does SGGS tell about “mun”, and how do we work on our “mun”
2. Abstract
•Let us look at what is SGGS telling us about “mun” which is mostly translated as “mind”. How is it different or same from the “no mind” or “zero mind” concepts in various spiritual practices. And how to work on our “mun” to stay on the path our Satguru’swant us to be on –the processes, the Maryadas, the systems setup by our Gurus. Let us explore if we are utilizing them for the final goal, and are we on the path.

4. mn/mun (Mind) what is it?
•Closest translation of mnis Mind
•History for meaning of Mind
–originally from a PIEverbal root *men-, meaning "to think, remember", Latin mens"mind", Sanskrit manas"mind“
–The generalization of mindto include all mental faculties, thought, will, feeling and memory, gradually develops over the 14th and 15th centuries
•Mind understood in different ways
–Mind is subject of study in different fields –Philosophy, Psychology, Neuroscience, Parapsychology, Animal Intelligence, Religion and even Artificial intelligence
–Property exclusive to humans, links mind to theories of birth- death, even life after death
5. Religions and Mind
•Judaism -"moachshalital halev", the mind rules the heart
–Humans can approach the Divine intellectually, through learning and behaving according to the Divine Will as enclothedin the Torah, and use that deep logical understanding to elicit and guide emotional arousal during prayer.
•Christianity -see the mind as distinct from the soul(Greek nous) and sometimes further distinguished from the spirit
•Western esoteric traditionssometimes refer to a mental bodythat exists on a plane other than the physical.
•Taoismsees the human being as contiguous with natural forces, and the mind as not separate from the body.
•Confucianismsees the mind, like the body, as inherently perfectible.
•Buddhism: Human beings consist of merely a body and a mind, and nothing extra. Mind is “space-like” and “illusion-like”
•New religious movements e.g. Sri Aurobindounited Eastern, Western Psycologicaltraditions–Integral Psychology (spiritual understanding of various planes and parts of being )
6. Essence of “Mind” in Spiritual Practices
•Essence is same in all of them, worded differently
–You give up your mind, merge it with higher reality, go beyond mind
–In this state you achieve what you have to achieve, but now assisted by the power behind all creation
–Prepare your mind for nothing other than Divinity, by being no-mind, one-mind….
•You might achieve above state with awareness or you might have it by Grace
–In both these cases you achieve the same purpose either Guided Unconsciously with Grace or with awareness by following certain practices
•Beyond mind or with higher mind –there is Oneness, its enlightenment
•Non-Realized or Un-enlightened mind
–Living within limited view because of mind, inhabiting little prisons in minds; totally trapped in mind, creating conflicts with creation, with reality and with other minds, other minds becoming your enemy
•Spiritual awakening is realizing
–that there is more deeper dimension in you
–and its liberating to know that there is more to you than knowing you and associating you as a mind entity
7. Other Terminologies
•Original Mind
–Prior to thought, prior to desire, prior to any conceptualization
–Discovered by removing all sensation, desires, concepts, intellection, violation and any awareness of “I”
–Budhismcalls it BudhaNature or no mind
•No-mind
–Taoist background, and used by Buddhists
•Chan [Zen] translates it as "no deliberate mind of one's own" or "no mind of one's own,“.As he explain in his discussion of the Neo-Taoism of Wang Pi (d. 249) and Kuo Hsiang (d. 312), the Taoist sage rises beyond all distinctions and contradictions while remaining in the midst of human affairs."In dealing with things he has 'no deliberate mind of his own' (wu-shin) but responds to them spontaneously without any discrimination....
–Final analysis concludes -no-mind, true-mind, original-mind all the same!
•Zero Mind
–From one of Zen’s talk -Child’s mind is zero mind –no memory , like a clear mirror, reflects. Boring is imp, else you keep craving, if you can get bored, means you can get enlightened. You get enlightened, get to zero mind, then you can do anything
8. Some Quotes from Scriptures
•“For the one who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends; but for one who has failed to do so, his very mind will be his greatest enemy” –BhagvatGita-6.6
•“The peace of God is with them whose mind and soul are in harmony, who are free from desire and wrath, who know their own soul” -BhagvatGita
•“The mind is everything, what you think you become” - Buddhist Quote
•“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few”-ShunryuSuzuki, Zen Mind
•“No mind is enlightened mind”

O my mind, you are the embodiment of the Divine Light -recognize your own origin.
O my mind, the Dear Lord is with you; through the Guru's Teachings, enjoy His Love.

Acknowledge your origin, and then you shall know your Husband Lord, and so understand death and birth.
By Guru's Grace, know the One; then, you shall not love any other.
Peace comes to the mind, and gladness resounds; then, you shall be acclaimed.
Thus says Nanak: O my mind, you are the very image of the Luminous Lord; recognize the true origin of your self. ||5|
If my mnis Jot, Divine light already, why can't I see the Divine, the Parmatma?
Ang1160: What can you see?
God is present, right here at hand; why do you say that He is far away?
Tie up your disturbing passions, and find the Beauteous Lord. ||1||Pause||
10. SGGS –What is Mind
Why am I like this?
Soohi Mahala3:
O mind, as you serve, so do you become, and so are the deeds that you do.
Whatever you yourself plant, that is what you shall have to eat; nothing else can be said about this. ||7|||
11. Control mind –mun marna
What is “mun marna” –Killing mind or conquering mind or reforming mind?
Mystery-
Your inherent nature, keeps your mind occupied all the time
By killing mind, who has become Sidha, one with supreme spiritual powers
Who is the Muni, sage, who has killed his mind.
Even if you have killed your mind, what worth is it, who have you saved.
Everyone speaks thru mind
So, without killing mind, cannot do true devotional worship
Says Kabeer, onwwho knows secret of this mystery
Beholds within his own mind, the God of three universes
12. Control mind –mun marna
•Kill duality, dubhida
He alone is silent sage, who subdues his mind's duality. Subduing his duality, contemplates God.
Let each person examine his own mind, O Siblings of Destiny. Examine your mind, and you shall obtain the nine treasures of the Naam.
M3:
Without conquering his mind, no one can be successful. See this, and concentrate on it. The wandering holy men are tired of making pilgrimages to sacred shrines; they have not been able to conquer their minds.
The Gurmukhhas conquered his mind, and he remains lovingly absorbed in the True Lord. O Nanak, this is how the filth of the mind is removed; the Word of the Shabadburns away the ego.
Liberating state
Prabhati M 1: 1343:
13. Achieving mun marna
How to achieve this state
Can I force it?
A39: SriRaag; M 4:
No one has found Him by stubborn-mindedness. All have grown weary of the effort.
Thousands of clever mental tricks have been tried, but still, the raw and undisciplined mind does not absorb the Color of the Lord's Love.
By falsehood and deception, none have found Him. Whatever you plant, you shall eat. ||3||
How to Reform?
A593: M3
Riches and the supernatural spiritual powers of the Siddhas are all emotional attachments; through them, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, does not come to dwell in the mind.
Serving the Guru, the mind becomes immaculately pure, and the darkness of spiritual ignorance is dispelled.
The jewel of the Naam is revealed in the home of one's own being; O Nanak, one merges in celestial bliss.
14. Reform/Transform mind
A1342:
Mun and mayais never killed. The One who created this, understands. Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, one is carried across the terrifying world-ocean.
.
A687 M1:
One who conquers his own self through contemplation is saved, and saves others as well; he does not come to be born again.
The supreme meditator is Himself the philosopher's stone, which transforms lead into gold. The true man is pleasing to Him.
A116 M 3:
If they should meet the True Guru, then they obtain the essence of reality; the Name of the Lord comes to dwell in their minds. Those who die in the Shabadand subdue their own minds, obtain the door of liberation.
A159:
When you subdue your mind, the inherent wandering nature is also subdued. Without such a death, how can one find the Divine.
Only few knows the medicine to kill the mind, one whose mind dies in the Shabad, understands this.

Drinking in the Lord's Ambrosial Bani, the mind is satisfied, and all pleasures come to abide within. Attaining the Lord of Excellence, I sing the Songs of Joy. The True Guru, becoming merciful, has fulfilled my desires.
16. How to Purify Mind, What to Practice?
O my mind, without a ladder, how will you climb up to the Temple of the Lord?
O my mind, without a boat, you shall not reach the other shore.
On that far shore is Your Beloved, Infinite Friend. Only your awareness of the Guru's Shabadwill carry you across.

Join the SaadhSangat, the Company of the Holy, and you shall enjoy ecstasy; you shall not regret or repent later on.

Be Merciful, O Merciful True Lord God: please give me the Blessing of the Lord's Name, and the Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
Telling us without Satguru’ssupport, Naamsupport, SaadhSangat, cannot achieve the state.
