Editor's Notes
As an international leading research center on Information & Telecommunication Technologies,
iMinds want to contribute to the development of IT based knowledge economy in Flanders, and the EU at large.
Past 10 years, our track record has build
A research community of about 900 researchers
With a clear scientific and economic & societal impact so far
iMinds attracts people from all over the world , especially the last 5 years we see an increase in the internationalisation of our own research community.
And this results in a significant brain gain for Flanders (is a brain engine for Flanders.)
If we want to (do) / perform even better in the future,
if we want to boost our technical and scientific excellence even more we have to keep attracting the best talents from all over the world.
An end-to-end framework to valorize innovation based on open innovation
Open Collaboration: To establish critical mass with a healthy mix of academic and industrial partners
Methodology and environment:
Cooperative iMinds has several instruments for cooperative research e.g.,
ICONs (Interdisciplinary Cooperative research, formerly called GBO projects). These are interdisciplinary cooperative projects between companies or non-profit organizations and iMinds research groups.
Strategic partnerships, sometimes bi-lateral, with major industrial partners.
Strategic partnerships with other strategic research centers, e.g., IMEC (semi- conductors), VIB (Biotech), VITO (environ- mental technology, energy)
Spaces: Means for colocation, specifically for start-ups (iCubes) but also join labs with e.g., Alcatel-Lucent
Tools: IT infrastructure, innovation methodology and, most importantly, business case modeling and analysis
Coaching: Active coaching of, e.g, start-ups. E.g., our entrepreneurs in residence.
Rapid prototyping:
The spirit is “launch, listen, learn”.
Or “fail fast, fail forward, fail better”
We use an agile methodology with fast iterations based on our living labs: iLab.o and iLab.t
iLab.o: User experience
iLab.t: Technology
After the prototyping, a the product has reached the stage where it is ready to be commercially launched
Solution Delivery: Go-to-market stage
Marketing and communication support
Pre-seed funding (iVenture)
Moonshoots: Research challenges with the potential to unlock a new market or improve by an order of magnitude. If it has a name, we do not do it.
