ARE YOU SUCCESSFUL? 
Most people search endlessly for happiness and success 
but many fail because they lack confidence and have 
little self-esteem. 
Is it really possible to find happiness and success? YES, 
but there are NO quick fixes and NO easy methods as 
others may promise. It takes a personal commitment to 
a lifetime of hard work and patience. 
The following slide presentation will get you started by 
helping you determine your confidence level and will 
give you the tools to increase your self-esteem.

KNOW THYSELF. ~Plato 
This short sentence has an important message – know thyself, but 
how many people really do know who they are? Sadly, the answer is 
not many. Why? 
• We live according to what others expect 
• We lose our own unique identity 
• We hide behind masks and put up walls 
• We see flaws, imperfections, failures 
• We want to be somebody else 
Let’s start finding out who we really are by comparing our lives to 
the life of a butterfly.
BUTTERFLIES ARE BEAUTIFUL
HOW MARVELOUS IT WOULD BE… 
• To fly high and free 
• To spread our wings 
• To show our beauty 
to all
BUTTERFLIES WERE ONCE… 
…plain ordinary caterpillars. 
How did something 
so plain become 
so beautiful? 
It’s all in the plans 
of nature.
THE BUTTERFLY GOES THROUGH 
4 STAGES 
1) The Egg Stage 
2) The Caterpillar or Larvae Stage 
3) The Pupa or Chrysalis Stage 
4) The Butterfly or Adult Stage
THE ADULT BUTTERFLY… 
…lays its eggs on 
plant leaves and 
soon they hatch 
into caterpillars
THE CATERPILLAR (LARVAE)… 
• Is an eating machine 
that grows and 
expands quickly 
• Crawls along the path 
of life 
• Stores up energy 
• Gets ready for the 
next cycle of life
THEN IT BECOMES A PUPA 
(CHRYSALIS) 
• Hanging around all 
wrapped up in itself 
• Rapid changes taking 
place inside 
• Metamorphosis is 
preparing the body 
for the next stage
FINALLY THE CHANGE IS COMPLETE 
A magnificent butterfly 
emerges from the 
pupa!! 
It spreads its wings, flies 
high & free, showing 
its beauty to all.
PEOPLE GO THROUGH SIMILAR 
STAGES 
Crawling along 
the path of life 
Waiting for change 
Spreading our wings 
Being nurtured in a 
secure place
IN THE EGG STAGE 
• We are being fed and 
cared for by our mother 
• We feel safe and warm 
• We are waiting to come 
into the world
IN THE CATERPILLAR STAGE 
• Our lives are simple and 
ordinary 
• We feed on our 
environment to nourish 
our body, mind and soul 
• We learn from family 
and others around us
IN THE PUPAL STAGE 
• We just hang around all wrapped up in 
ourselves 
• We wait to see 
what happens in life 
• We encounter both 
positive and 
negative situations
AS BUTTERFLIES 
•We feel confident 
and vibrant 
•We are at the most 
exciting stage of our 
lives 
•We can reach our 
full potential in life
IN A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT 
• People treat us and 
others with love and 
kindness. 
• We feel loved, wanted 
and appreciated 
• We grow with 
confidence and build 
good self-esteem
IN A NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENT 
• People treat us and others 
with abuse, lack of respect 
and little or no support 
• We feel unloved, unwanted 
and unappreciated 
• Our confidence does not 
grow and we develop poor 
self-esteem
THE POSITIVE SITUATIONS 
• Help us break free from being 
trapped in the pupal stage 
• Move us forward with 
confidence 
• Help us deal effectively with 
life’s difficulties 
• Allow us to set realistic goals 
and work towards them
THE NEGATIVE SITUATIONS 
• Keep us trapped in the pupal 
stage or send us back to being 
a caterpillar again 
• Create fear and insecurity 
• Can develop bitterness 
and anger 
• Create distrust and emotional 
distress
WITH GOOD SELF-ESTEEM 
• People can be butterflies 
most of their lives 
• Stress will cause only 
temporary setbacks 
• We have enough 
confidence to help us 
bounce back
WITH POOR SELF-ESTEEM 
• People will become a 
butterfly for just a 
short time 
• Stress will always cause 
setbacks 
• Lack of confidence 
keeps butterfly hidden
WHAT STAGE ARE YOU AT RIGHT 
NOW? 
WHAT STAGE DO YOU WANT TO BE AT?
HOW DO WE BECOME 
BUTTERFLIES? 
By building confidence and increasing 
our self-esteem through: 
• 1) Self-evaluation 
• 2) Self-acceptance 
• 3) Self-image
1) SELF-EVALUATION 
How do you feel about yourself? 
• Most people have distorted 
ideas about who they are 
• Need to discover abilities, 
personality traits, expectations 
• Make a list of your abilities and 
expectations
2) SELF-ACCEPTANCE 
• Realistic awareness of one’s 
strengths & weaknesses 
• Ability to accept and not be critical 
or our imperfections 
• Realization that we all have unique 
worth & value 
• Necessary for good mental health 
and a prerequisite for change
3) SELF-IMAGE 
• Showing others how we 
feel about ourselves 
through our appearance 
and actions 
• Looking good on the 
outside will help us feel 
good on the inside
SELF-ESTEEM 
When we feel good about 
ourselves and can accept our 
strengths and weaknesses, 
we will build confidence and 
our self-esteem will grow.
BECOMING CONFIDENT IS HARD IN 
TODAY’S WORLD 
Society tells us: 
• We lack something in our life 
• We need to improve ourselves 
• We need to be busier & quicker 
• We need money & possessions 
to be happy & successful 
THIS IS NOT TRUE AND JUST 
LEADS TO STRESS!
STRESS HAS BECOME A WAY OF 
LIFE!!! 
We are all trying to become the perfect 
person in an imperfect world. 
We are just setting ourselves up for 
frustration and failure!
IT’S TIME TO STOP BEATING 
OURSELVES UP! 
Life is NOT perfect 
People are NOT perfect 
The grass is NOT really greener on the 
other side of the fence 
Happiness does NOT come from 
outside, it comes from inside each of us 
Until you can love yourself, you will 
never find happiness
WHAT CAN WE DO? 
Start believing in ourselves 
Start being a good example to others 
Start helping others believe in 
themselves 
YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN LIFE 
YOUR LIFE, SO START LIVING BY MAKING 
IMPORTANT POSITIVE CHANGES
NOW LET’S FIND THE BEAUTIFUL 
BUTTERFLIES! 
Find a mirror and look directly into it. 
Who do you see?
THE PERSON YOU ARE LOOKING 
AT... 
…is the ONLY ONE who can make you 
happy!
YOU ARE THE BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLY! 
*You don’t have to let the world stress you out 
*You don’t have to be like anyone else 
*You are one of a kind 
*You are unique 
*YOU ARE SPECIAL!
LOOK AT YOURSELF IN THE MIRROR 
AGAIN 
REPEAT 
“I am special and I am the only 
one who can make me happy”. 
Do this at home several times 
each day, WITH MEANING!
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT 
YOURSELF? 
Think of 5 things that you like about 
yourself and write them down. Yes, you 
can do this. Here are some examples. 
I’m a good 
gardener. 
I have smooth 
skin. 
I’m a good 
listener. 
I’m fair to 
my employees. 
I can ride 
my bike.
ALWAYS TRY TO BE POSITIVE 
• Doesn’t come naturally 
• Develop & practice positive habits 
• Takes work and patience 
• Requires a conscious effort 
• Positive habits will influence 
other people
DO SOMETHING POSITIVE 
• Watch positive, uplifting TV 
programs 
• Read positive books 
• Listen to happy, upbeat 
music 
• Start exercising regularly & 
eat healthy foods 
• Join an interest group or start 
a hobby
SURROUND YOURSELF WITH 
POSITIVE PEOPLE 
• Increase time spent with positive people 
• Decrease or eliminate time spent with negative 
people (may be difficult to do with negative 
family members or close friends, but do your 
best) 
• When around negative people, try to focus on 
being positive 
• Get together with some friends and watch a 
funny movie or do some fun activities
TRY TO BE POSITIVE TOWARDS 
OTHERS 
Being positive and helping others will 
also make you feel good and help build 
confidence. 
• Give special gifts (simple & 
inexpensive) 
• Spend quality time 
• Use kind, encouraging words 
• Volunteer for a local organization
BEING POSITIVE HELPS ALL OF US 
STAY HEALTHY 
physically 
spiritually 
mentally 
emotionally
WE CAN ALL BE BUTTERFLIES!

would be if we showed our inner 
beauty to all.

  • 38. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF? Think of 5 things that you like about yourself and write them down. Yes, you can do this. Here are some examples. I’m a good gardener. I have smooth skin. I’m a good listener. I’m fair to my employees. I can ride my bike.
  • 39. ALWAYS TRY TO BE POSITIVE • Doesn’t come naturally • Develop & practice positive habits • Takes work and patience • Requires a conscious effort • Positive habits will influence other people
  • 40. DO SOMETHING POSITIVE • Watch positive, uplifting TV programs • Read positive books • Listen to happy, upbeat music • Start exercising regularly & eat healthy foods • Join an interest group or start a hobby

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE PEOPLE • Increase time spent with positive people • Decrease or eliminate time spent with negative people (may be difficult to do with negative family members or close friends, but do your best) • When around negative people, try to focus on being positive • Get together with some friends and watch a funny movie or do some fun activities
  • 42. TRY TO BE POSITIVE TOWARDS OTHERS Being positive and helping others will also make you feel good and help build confidence. • Give special gifts (simple & inexpensive) • Spend quality time • Use kind, encouraging words • Volunteer for a local organization
