What is this course about?
§ Many industrial and civil functions are
realised as networks (SmartSystems, IoT)
§ CEP: distributed energy generation,
transmission through power grids
§ How can we guarantee the function of complex
networks (structurally)?
§ How to defend the network against
external influences (natural or not)?
[Wikipedia.org/Power
grid]
4. Introduction

Topics
- Introduction to process safety concepts
- Description and analysis of networks (introduction to graph theory)
- Steady-state analysis of network structure and function
(Boolean analysis, Fault tree analysis)
- Reliability analysis and improvement by redundancy and control
(Statistics and Monte Carlo simulations)
- Cyber security: Detecting and deflecting attacks on networks
§ Analysis: by hand (pen and paper), computationally (programming required)

Schedule
§ One lecture per week: Wed, 10:00 – 12:00
§ One seminar per week: Wed, 14:00 – 16:00
Reality
§ One lecture per week: Wed, 10:00 – 12:00
§ Seminars: (a) self-study, (b) in-person (approx. bi-weekly rotation)
Task sheets for each seminar will be provided. Students are expected to work on them
individually in the self-study period. Discussion and solutions will be provided in the
in-person seminars.
Final schedule will be published in this week (StudOn).

Material
§ Lecture notes will be made available before the lectures (slides, texts, …)
§ Notes will be supplemented by material (e.g., research articles) as we go along
§ Task sheets will be uploaded approx. one week before self-study seminar
§ Also: Discussion forum will be installed (mostly for you, I will have a look sometimes)

Grading
Exam (100%): oral, ca. 30 min
Practical: Additional ECTS points (please check whether you want/need them)
§ Get in contact, if you want to take the practical. Tasks will be distributed beginning
of the second half of this course.
Incentive programme
On each task sheets, there will be one (extended) task. Successful completion of the task
will be rewarded by 1 point. If more than three points are achieved (> 3 points), an improvement
of the final degree by 0.3 will be granted.
Solution to the task need to be handed in two days before the next in-person session (email).
