 Thermoplastics
 Thermosets
 Homopolymer
 Copolymer

5. Thermoplastic polymers
 Plastics which are softened by heating
 Hardened by cooling
 And then softened by heating over and over again
 Mostly these are linear polymers
 These are not crossed-linked polymers
 Thermoplastics such as polyethylene, Nylon,
Polyvinyl chloride which soften on heating.
 These are ductile,recyclable.
 Example;Polyvinyl chloride

6. Thermosetting polymers
 Thermoset - having the property of
becoming permanently hard and rigid when
heated.
 These don’t soften upon heating.
 They are hard and rigid at room temperature.
 These are network polymers.
 These brittle and unrecyclible.

8. Examples and uses of thermoset plastic
materials:
 Epoxy resins - used as coating materials,
manufacture of insulating materials, etc ...
 Phenolic resins - tool handles, billiard balls, ,
insulation, etc ...

9. Homopolymers- homo means same.
It Consist of chains with identical bonding linkages to
each monomer unit.
This usually implies that the polymer is made from all
identical monomer molecules.
