I am drawn to intelligent fashion. Designers like Hussein Chalayan, Raf Simons (in
above’s case for Jil Sander), and the lesser known Mona Kowalski of A Détacher
all have an original point of view, and chart their own course rather than follow the
stream. What makes them truly special is that their clothes aren’t mere concepts,
they are made to be worn. I am particularly attracted to volume, which makes this A
Détacher dress on the left so special—the perfect balance of light and heavy fabrics,
the contrast of nude and black (my two favorite colors whenever I am not seduced by
extreme colors). When I go for color, I really commit to it. This is why I was so drawn
to these amazing fluorescent pieces — the jacket and ruffle — but then I like to mix
them with dirtier tones, like the olive and dusty mauve of the top and trousers.
I have been wearing glasses since the age of 6, when I chose my first black

objects. The world that we wanted to create was one of a deconstructed site — one that
was both archaic and futuristic. Layers upon layers of texture: piles of rock, granite,
marble, grout, dry wall, insulation, copper piping, gravel, and wood. In our minds, Fran-

You were a living gold rush.
Angelika: There was also a lot of stress. At some point I just quit and left: Rome, Nepal,
Sri Lanka and India. In Mumbai I said “Tschüss” to my Italian lover Stefano and went
back to Germany to live in Rosenheim in a converted chicken barn.
Olaf: Angelika came back on Christmas. Then we closed the first store and opened the
second one. We’ve been running this business for 27 years together.
Who were your clients?
Olaf: Popstars, Russian oligarchs, high society. One day Elton John swung by with four
security guards.
Angelika: Our first thought was, robbery! Then we recognized him.
Olaf: He browsed the store in the blink of an eye, bought a big diamond and left. A
billionaire from Düsseldorf asked me to make a frying pan key chain pendant in solid
gold for his wife as a symbol of her spending habits. In German Geld verbraten [frying
money] means to waste money.
Did you have a certain look when working in your store?
Angelika: I stayed true to my style: Romeo Gigli from head to toe. He was the greatest
back then.
What wardrobe pieces changed your life?
Angelika: Miniskirts and hot pants. They gave me more self-esteem. Later the pantsuit. I
love the contrast of the tame and the juicy.
Olaf: I also have a history with panties. In my case it was the bathing suit my grandmoth-
er had knit for me. The knots were far too wide, it would never dry and when I played at
the pool with the other kids something was always sticking out. This piece of clothing Olaf is wearing a shirt by Jil Sander,

Why did you shut down your store?
Olaf: It was burning me.
Angelika: After 30 years of work, we wanted to reward ourselves by letting go of it. We
had to do something; it was overdue. When we flipped through Elle magazine we read
about the Ayurveda spa in Trabend-Trabach. It was relatively new back then. It was there
where we learned to meditate.
Olaf: And about nutrition. Crazy how crucial that is. We kept going back for 10 years.
You let go of your past. What happened to your diamonds by Andy Warhol?
It was Portofilio of Four Screen Prints: an emerald, a ruby, a sapphire, a diamond.
Olaf:
Angelika gave them to me. I had them sold at Sotheby’s for a very nice price.
What was the difference from real stones?
Olaf: Warhol’s were bigger, the real ones are more precious. To combine fashion and
diamonds still fascinates us. We consider it an art form, and we will continue. Sleep is

Presidential Glengarry
by Aliona Doletskaya
But why? Why? Why do seven colors oscillating from chocolate brown through emerald green
to powder pink look so amazingly chic on African-American men? The hat, a traditional Scot-
tish glengarry is totally unexpected in this context. At first sight, he even looks a bit like a male
version of Aretha Franklin. She wore that famous hat at President Obama’s inauguration. Plus,
the glengarry sings a sophisticated duet with Michael’s glasses.
How brave of him to juxtapose different types and sizes of checks, add a polka dot on a tie
and choose a different shade of white for the pocket square and the white of the shirt. Very Hamish
Bowles in a way. The crossed hands with long fingers on the umbrella echo a dancer’s pose; such
elegant feet arrangements are rarely seen on the street. I wish I could be as audacious as you are,
Michael. But why pose in a mall?!? That’s the only thing I find uncool about this fab picture.

W h e n ? The day of the royal wedding!
Where? This was taken at my house, just before we left to go to my friend’s
belated 18th birthday party.
M o s t i m p o r t a n t p e o p l e ? Stella (the host), I guess.
Topics? Screw the royal wedding, screw exams, screw revision/school work!
Fuck it, we’re celebrating Stella’s 18th. And how the royal wedding was an
excuse for everyone to get royally wasted... Also, someone’s sex life (or lack
of it) and regrets.
What were y o u w e a r i n g ? A Shaun of the Dead costume consisting of an old
cut up school uniform, gold tights, and cherry Doc’s. My friend was Simba.
The theme was the letter “S.”
What was sp e c i a l ? The bucket list, Erin’s sanitary towel costume, getting to
know distant friends a bit better and saying far too many personal things.
Soundtrack? Jessie J “Do it like a Dude,” and then a load of shitty dubstep.
Other people ? Stoners getting stoned, posh people who think they are above
us who kept trying to make me take photos of them, people that have been
exiled from our friend circle but were invited out of pity, trying to convince
other people not to dislike them.
Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n ? London buses.
S t i m u l a t i o n ? Cider, roll-ups, MDMA, and shisha.
Highlight? Seeing friends that had been absent from my life for a while,
smoking in the house like a bad gal, shisha conversations with almost strang-
ers, and the UV light that made people’s teeth and eyes glow freakily.
S e x ? No sex that night...
Sle e p ? In my bed, alone, and probably a decent amount.
