Where are you from? I’m from Minnesota.
What is your sign? I’m a Leo. People use stars as a polite way of figuring out what a person is
like and just love putting each other in categories.

                                       side of happiness.
What do you dread on Monday morning? I don’t dread Mondays that much… I’m usually
                                       ready for the contrast.
Are we on the right path as a species? I think so. We’re experiencing and testing both good
and bad things, which is the best way to grow.
What is your comic going to be about? It’s tough to be brief on this, but it’s about a cult that
believes in a spiritual being who kills people who misuse the word “love.”

have that in solid gold!?!” After a while the business really took off.
You were a living gold rush.
Angelika: There was also a lot of stress. At some point I just quit and left: Rome, Nepal,
Sri Lanka and India. In Mumbai I said “Tschüss” to my Italian lover Stefano and went
back to Germany to live in Rosenheim in a converted chicken barn.
Olaf: Angelika came back on Christmas. Then we closed the first store and opened the
second one. We’ve been running this business for 27 years together.
Who were your clients?
Olaf: Popstars, Russian oligarchs, high society. One day Elton John swung by with four
        security guards.
Angelika: Our first thought was, robbery! Then we recognized him.
Olaf: He browsed the store in the blink of an eye, bought a big diamond and left. A

Did you have a certain look when working in your store?
Angelika: I stayed true to my style: Romeo Gigli from head to toe. He was the greatest
        back then.
What wardrobe pieces changed your life?
Angelika: Miniskirts and hot pants. They gave me more self-esteem. Later the pantsuit. I
love the contrast of the tame and the juicy.
Olaf: I also have a history with panties. In my case it was the bathing suit my grandmoth-

Why did you shut down your store?
        Olaf: It was burning me.
Angelika: After 30 years of work, we wanted to reward ourselves by letting go of it. We
had to do something; it was overdue. When we flipped through Elle magazine we read
about the Ayurveda spa in Trabend-Trabach. It was relatively new back then. It was there
        where we learned to meditate.
Olaf: And about nutrition. Crazy how crucial that is. We kept going back for 10 years.
You let go of your past. What happened to your diamonds by Andy Warhol?
It was Portofilio of Four Screen Prints: an emerald, a ruby, a sapphire, a diamond.
        Olaf:
Angelika gave them to me. I had them sold at Sotheby’s for a very nice price.
What was the difference from real stones?
Olaf: Warhol’s were bigger, the real ones are more precious. To combine fashion and
diamonds still fascinates us. We consider it an art form, and we will continue. Sleep is
        for the dead..

But why? Why? Why do seven colors oscillating from chocolate brown through emerald green
to powder pink look so amazingly chic on African-American men? The hat, a traditional Scot-

                             / username: from Paris about
Rive Gauche show at Fondation Pierre Bergé in Paris

Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent. The name, as long as it is, is capable both of sending
chills down your spine and bathing your credit card in tears. While Rome’s cardinals and bish-
ops beatify their popes, Paris has sanctified its own prophet by dedicating a series of tributes to
his creations.
The latest hommage to the designer’s half- century career, which began in 1959 when
he became the assistant designer to Christian Dior at the tender age of 19, is the exhibition Yves
Saint Laurent Rive Gauche at the Fondation Pierre Bergé. More intimate than the 2001 retro-
spective at the Petit Palais of Saint Laurent’s work, this show may be less festive, but has a much
cozier atmosphere, faithfully reproducing the designer’s legendary Left Bank boutique, which
opened on September 26th, 1966.
The interior was conceived in collaboration with the designer Isabelle Hebey (famous
for designing the interiors in the Concorde), who enriched the decor with Djinn benches covered
in violet fabric by Olivier Mourgue, lamps by Isamu Noguchi, full-length portraits of Saint Lau-
rent by Eduardo Arroyo, and Niki de Saint Phalle’s celebrated Nanas sculptures.
The clothes are casually exhibited, as if in an actual boutique, but enthusiastic visitors
must resist the impulse to try on the wonderful ensembles on display. Tourist signs, the likes of
which are most often found in Parisian churches, say Ne toucher qu’avec les yeux (Touch only
with the eyes!) As I gazed at creations like a black barthea tuxedo, a black, braided velvet blazer
and waistcoat, or a camel-hair toned wool coat, I realized that instead it should read “Touch only
with the heart!”
An irresistible soundtrack with some of Saint Laurent’s favorite songs from the 60s and
70s set the mood. As I danced through the exhibit, I recalled the designer’s declaration, A bas le
Ritz, vive la rue! (Down with the Ritz, long live the street!) It was a battle-cry for a radical new
imperialism of youth which launched a fashion revolution.
Fascinated by the present yet constantly reinventing it, Saint Laurent was an interpreter
for a new generation of women, a generation whose daring and assertiveness was matched only
by their desire to seduce. Indeed, while he always remained loyal to an ideal of excellence, what
truly interested Saint Laurent, as he once confessed to Dino Buzzati, was to “make dresses that
serve a real purpose, that can be worn by any woman.” Which meant, in effect, making couture
affordable for a range of women. To do this, he adapted his singular creativity to fit within the
framework of mass-production. As a result, the notion of “Saint Laurent hors couture” not only
marks a certain way to dress, but, more importantly, a specific way to live.
Though Avenue Montaigne’s sparkling boutiques are all just around the corner, never
before has the Rive Gauche been so close to the Rive Droite as it is in this exhibition. Step inside

                         W h e n ? The day of the royal wedding!
Where? This was taken at my house, just before we left to go to my friend’s
                                    belated 18th birthday party.
               M o s t i m p o r t a n t p e o p l e ? Stella (the host), I guess.
Topics? Screw the royal wedding, screw exams, screw revision/school work!
Fuck it, we’re celebrating Stella’s 18th. And how the royal wedding was an
excuse for everyone to get royally wasted... Also, someone’s sex life (or lack
                                            of it) and regrets.
 What were y o u w e a r i n g ? A Shaun of the Dead costume consisting of an old
cut up school uniform, gold tights, and cherry Doc’s. My friend was Simba.
The theme was the letter “S.”
What was sp e c i a l ? The bucket list, Erin’s sanitary towel costume, getting to
know distant friends a bit better and saying far too many personal things.
Soundtrack? Jessie J “Do it like a Dude,” and then a load of shitty dubstep.
Other people ? Stoners getting stoned, posh people who think they are above
us who kept trying to make me take photos of them, people that have been
exiled from our friend circle but were invited out of pity, trying to convince
other people not to dislike them.
                                Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n ? London buses.
               S t i m u l a t i o n ? Cider, roll-ups, MDMA, and shisha.
Highlight? Seeing friends that had been absent from my life for a while,
smoking in the house like a bad gal, shisha conversations with almost strang-
ers, and the UV light that made people’s teeth and eyes glow freakily.
                                      S e x ? No sex that night...
Sle e p ? In my bed, alone, and probably a decent amount.

                                                                                                    247

Haidee Findlay-levin Haidee Findlay-Levin, fashion editor, stylist and consultant. I am drawn to intelligent fashion. Designers like Hussein Chalayan, Raf Simons (in above’s case for Jil Sander), and the lesser known Mona Kowalski of A Détacher all have an original point of view, and chart their own course rather than follow the stream. What makes them truly special is that their clothes aren’t mere concepts, they are made to be worn. I am particularly attracted to volume, which makes this A Détacher dress on the left so special—the perfect balance of light and heavy fabrics, the contrast of nude and black (my two favorite colors whenever I am not seduced by extreme colors). When I go for color, I really commit to it. This is why I was so drawn to these amazing fluorescent pieces — the jacket and ruffle — but then I like to mix them with dirtier tones, like the olive and dusty mauve of the top and trousers. At some point I just quit and left: Rome, Nepal, Sri Lanka and India. In Mumbai I said “Tschüss” to my Italian lover Stefano and went back to Germany to live in Rosenheim in a converted chicken barn. Olaf: Angelika came back on Christmas. Then we closed the first store and opened the second one. We’ve been running this business for 27 years together. Who were your clients? Olaf: Popstars, Russian oligarchs, high society. One day Elton John swung by with four security guards. Angelika: Our first thought was, robbery! Then we recognized him. Olaf: He browsed the store in the blink of an eye, bought a big diamond and left. A billionaire from Düsseldorf asked me to make a frying pan key chain pendant in solid gold for his wife as a symbol of her spending habits. In German Geld verbraten [frying money] means to waste money. Did you have a certain look when working in your store? Angelika: I stayed true to my style: Romeo Gigli from head to toe. He was the greatest back then. What wardrobe pieces changed your life? Angelika: Miniskirts and hot pants. They gave me more self-esteem. Later the pantsuit. I love the contrast of the tame and the juicy. Olaf: I also have a history with panties. In my case it was the bathing suit my grandmoth- er had knit for me. The knots were far too wide, it would never dry and when I played at the pool with the other kids something was always sticking out. Angelika: After 30 years of work, we wanted to reward ourselves by letting go of it. We had to do something; it was overdue. When we flipped through Elle magazine we read about the Ayurveda spa in Trabend-Trabach. It was relatively new back then. It was there where we learned to meditate. Olaf: And about nutrition. Crazy how crucial that is. We kept going back for 10 years. You let go of your past. What happened to your diamonds by Andy Warhol? It was Portofilio of Four Screen Prints: an emerald, a ruby, a sapphire, a diamond. Olaf: Angelika gave them to me. I had them sold at Sotheby’s for a very nice price. What was the difference from real stones? Olaf: Warhol’s were bigger, the real ones are more precious. To combine fashion and diamonds still fascinates us. We consider it an art form, and we will continue. Sleep is for the dead..

The hat, a traditional Scot- tish glengarry is totally unexpected in this context. At first sight, he even looks a bit like a male version of Aretha Franklin. She wore that famous hat at President Obama’s inauguration. Plus, the glengarry sings a sophisticated duet with Michael’s glasses. • 39. KUltur exhibit kriTik One Touch Only With the Heart! Laurent’s Chiara Crespi Chiarrra yves Saint / username: from Paris about Rive Gauche show at Fondation Pierre Bergé in Paris Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent. The name, as long as it is, is capable both of sending chills down your spine and bathing your credit card in tears. While Rome’s cardinals and bish- ops beatify their popes, Paris has sanctified its own prophet by dedicating a series of tributes to his creations. The latest hommage to the designer’s half- century career, which began in 1959 when he became the assistant designer to Christian Dior at the tender age of 19, is the exhibition Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche at the Fondation Pierre Bergé. More intimate than the 2001 retro- spective at the Petit Palais of Saint Laurent’s work, this show may be less festive, but has a much cozier atmosphere, faithfully reproducing the designer’s legendary Left Bank boutique, which opened on September 26th, 1966. The interior was conceived in collaboration with the designer Isabelle Hebey (famous for designing the interiors in the Concorde), who enriched the decor with Djinn benches covered in violet fabric by Olivier Mourgue, lamps by Isamu Noguchi, full-length portraits of Saint Lau- rent by Eduardo Arroyo, and Niki de Saint Phalle’s celebrated Nanas sculptures. The clothes are casually exhibited, as if in an actual boutique, but enthusiastic visitors must resist the impulse to try on the wonderful ensembles on display. Tourist signs, the likes of which are most often found in Parisian churches, say Ne toucher qu’avec les yeux (Touch only with the eyes!) As I gazed at creations like a black barthea tuxedo, a black, braided velvet blazer and waistcoat, or a camel-hair toned wool coat, I realized that instead it should read “Touch only with the heart!” An irresistible soundtrack with some of Saint Laurent’s favorite songs from the 60s and 70s set the mood. As I danced through the exhibit, I recalled the designer’s declaration, A bas le Ritz, vive la rue! (Down with the Ritz, long live the street!) It was a battle-cry for a radical new imperialism of youth which launched a fashion revolution. Fascinated by the present yet constantly reinventing it, Saint Laurent was an interpreter for a new generation of women, a generation whose daring and assertiveness was matched only by their desire to seduce. Indeed, while he always remained loyal to an ideal of excellence, what truly interested Saint Laurent, as he once confessed to Dino Buzzati, was to “make dresses that serve a real purpose, that can be worn by any woman.” Which meant, in effect, making couture affordable for a range of women. To do this, he adapted his singular creativity to fit within the framework of mass-production. As a result, the notion of “Saint Laurent hors couture” not only marks a certain way to dress, but, more importantly, a specific way to live. Though Avenue Montaigne’s sparkling boutiques are all just around the corner, never before has the Rive Gauche been so close to the Rive Droite as it is in this exhibition. Step inside the workshop of what was to become the hallmark of Saint Laurent style. Wander around it to the rhythms of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, or Serge Gainsbourg. But beware. Although your eyes will bask in the creations of the saint couturier, never before has a fashion Saint Laurent rive gauche, circa 1970 black jersey jumpsuit, bullet-chain belt, black patent leather ankle boots. exhibition fit so neatly into the aphorism that every French child learns from Saint- Exuperey’s All from collection Olivier Chatenet Le Petit Prince: “One sees clearly only with the heart. This was taken at my house, just before we left to go to my friend’s belated 18th birthday party. M o s t i m p o r t a n t p e o p l e ? Stella (the host), I guess. Topics? Screw the royal wedding, screw exams, screw revision/school work! Fuck it, we’re celebrating Stella’s 18th. And how the royal wedding was an excuse for everyone to get royally wasted... Also, someone’s sex life (or lack of it) and regrets. What were y o u w e a r i n g ? A Shaun of the Dead costume consisting of an old cut up school uniform, gold tights, and cherry Doc’s. My friend was Simba. The theme was the letter “S.” What was sp e c i a l ? The bucket list, Erin’s sanitary towel costume, getting to know distant friends a bit better and saying far too many personal things. Soundtrack? Jessie J “Do it like a Dude,” and then a load of shitty dubstep. Other people ? Stoners getting stoned, posh people who think they are above us who kept trying to make me take photos of them, people that have been exiled from our friend circle but were invited out of pity, trying to convince other people not to dislike them. Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n ? London buses. S t i m u l a t i o n ? Cider, roll-ups, MDMA, and shisha. Highlight? Seeing friends that had been absent from my life for a while, smoking in the house like a bad gal, shisha conversations with almost strang- ers, and the UV light that made people’s teeth and eyes glow freakily. S e x ? No sex that night... Sle e p ? In my bed, alone, and probably a decent amount. 247
