After the First World War started, it soon became obvious that at a distance the St
George's Cross of the Union (Jack) Flag was likely to be confused with the Iron
Cross that was already being used to identify their German counterparts.
This led to a particular change in 1915, with the intention of preventing accidental
loss of life. The replacement that was adopted in place of the Union Jack for the
purpose of identification is widespread today, albeit with varied colours, and can
be seen on these specific ‘things’ in most nations.
What is the replacement?

_______ House, previously known as Wankaner House, is a 50,000 sq foot
heritage property located at 78, Bhulabhai Desai Road,Breach Candy, Mumbai,
India.
A Grade-III listed mansion designed 1933 by British architect Claude Batley, the
property was originally built for the Maharaja of Wankaner, HH Sir Amarsinhji
Banesinhji and his son Pratapsinhji Jhala. From 1957 the property was leased to
the X and served as their Y.
The foreigner (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865), in honour of whom the
property is named, was also a statesman and lawyer. The X decided to sell the
property and shifted to the Y to its current location in Bandra Kurla Complex.
In September 2015, it was sold for a reported Rs 7.5 billion (US$ 113 million), to

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the current caretaker of
the structure, mentions in its records, "There are various theories
regarding the purpose for which X was constructed. However, it is
widely accepted that it was built at the center of the city, to
commemorate the eradication of Cholera", a deadly disease which
was widespread at that time. The ruler had prayed for the end of
the plague that was ravaging his city and vowed to build a place of
worship at the very place where he prayed.
Due to its architectural style, it is also called as the ‘Arc de
Triomphe’ of the east. This is however misleading, as the X was
built centuries before the Arc.

Hashima Island, commonly called Gunkanjima, is an abandoned island lying about
15 kilometers from the city of Nagasaki, in southern Japan. It is one of 505
uninhabited islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. The island's most notable features are
its abandoned concrete buildings, undisturbed except by nature, and the
surrounding sea wall. While the island is a symbol of the rapid industrialization of
Japan, it is also a reminder of its history as a site of forced labor prior to and
during the Second World War.
The island has appeared in a number of recent feature films. External shots of the
island were used in the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall. The 2017 South Korean
World War II film X fictitiously depicts an attempt by Korean forced labourers to
escape the labour camp on the island.
Hashima is more popularly known as X, which is the literal translation of

ops (ωψ, “eye”). Zeus fell in love with her and, to approach her, he

Studying soft-bodied deep sea creatures like jellyfish and squid have been
a difficult task for marine biologists as existing underwater tools cause
damage or even kill them. Researchers from Harvard University’s Wyss
Institute have developed a device called Rotary Actuated Dodecahedron

creatures without causing them any harm.
“X is used as an inspiration to help us build this. We have developed a

After the fall of Fort William in 1756, Siraj-Ud-Daulah’s troops captured all
remaining British soldiers. According to John Holwell, one of the prisoners, the
jailers locked the prisoners in the fort’s prison —X in soldiers' slang — a small
room that measured 4.30m. × 5.50 m (14 feet × 18 feet). The next morning, when
the X was opened, at 6.00 a.m., only about 23 of the prisoners remained alive.
“The dungeon was a strongly barred room, and was not intended for the
confinement of more than two or three men at a time. The prisoners were packed
so tightly that the door was difficult to close”
According to renowned ______________ Hong-Yee Chiu, the X of Calcutta (as
the prison came to be known) was the inspiration for a term we today know in an
entirely different context.

Despite being such an influential social and political term, _______ is of more
recent vintage than many people realize. The word can be used as either a noun
or a verb. It is also the rare word that we can trace to an exact origin, first
appearing in the autumn of 1880, during the Irish Land War.
At the time, the Irish Land League was advocating for better conditions on behalf
of the tenant farmers in rural Ireland, pushing back against the wealthy landlords
and agents who controlled the land. One particularly effective tactic the League
developed offered communities combat those in power in a manner that was both
legal and nonviolent.
This tactic ultimately took its name from one of its earliest victims: Captain Charles
C. _______ (1832-97), one of the land agents.

X is the chemical process by which the physical properties of natural or
synthetic ______ are improved. Finished ______ has higher tensile strength

Y. The name X is derived from the Roman God of Fire.
The process was discovered in 1839 by the U.S. inventor Charles Z, who also
noted the important function of certain additional substances in the process. In
1898, almost four decades after his death, The Z Company was founded and
named after him by Frank Seiberling.
Apart from its primary products, the Z company is also known for the Z Blimp.

The inspiration for the use of UV-reflective patterns came from knowledge of how
some species of spiders incorporate UV-reflective silk strands to their webs. The
reasons for what some scientists refer to as “decorations” include attracting
insects and distracting or warning away larger animals, including birds. This is to
the spider’s advantage, because if a bird were to fly through the web, the spider
would temporarily lose its ability to capture prey.

When the Bridge Street factory became too small, George X had a new vision of
the future. 'Why should an industrial area be squalid and depressing?’ he asked.
His vision was shared by his brother Richard, and they began searching for a very
special site for their new factory.
In 1878 the brothers found their new home. They chose a 14½ acre greenfield site
between the villages of Stirchley, King's Norton and Selly Oak, about four miles
south of central Birmingham. The site comprised a meadow with a cottage and a
trout stream - the _____.
The factory was initially going to be called, _____brook, after the cottage and
_____brook Hall which stood nearby. But instead, 'Y' was chosen - combining the
name of the stream with the French word for ‘town’.
In 1908, the brothers launched the iconic product named after the factory township

  • 28. 8. Hashima Island, commonly called Gunkanjima, is an abandoned island lying about 15 kilometers from the city of Nagasaki, in southern Japan. It is one of 505 uninhabited islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. The island's most notable features are its abandoned concrete buildings, undisturbed except by nature, and the surrounding sea wall. While the island is a symbol of the rapid industrialization of Japan, it is also a reminder of its history as a site of forced labor prior to and during the Second World War. The island has appeared in a number of recent feature films. External shots of the island were used in the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall. The 2017 South Korean World War II film X fictitiously depicts an attempt by Korean forced labourers to escape the labour camp on the island. Hashima is more popularly known as X, which is the literal translation of Gunkanjima.
