The Ports of Hong Kong
• The Port of Hong Kong, located by the South China Sea, is a deepwater
seaport dominated by trade in containerized manufactured products, and to
a lesser extent raw materials and passengers.
• A key factor in the economic development of Hong Kong, the natural shelter
and deep waters ofVictoria Harbour provide ideal conditions for berthing
and the handling of all types of vessels.
• It is one of the busiest ports in the world, in the three categories of shipping
movements, cargo handled and passengers carried.
KwaiTsing Container Port
• KwaiTsing Port is home to nine container terminals that are financed and owned by five private operators,
they are: Hong Kong InternationalTerminals Limited, ModernTerminals Limited, COSCO-HITTerminals
(Hong Kong) Limited, Asia ContainerTerminals Limited and Goodman DP World. Each operator
independently undertakes its own commercial arrangements with its shipping line customers
• The Hong Kong container terminals are renowned for their efficiency. In year 2013, KwaiTsing Port handled
over 17.1 millionTEUs, roughly about three-quarters of the total container throughput of Hong Kong.
• Altogether, there are 24 container berths with a total quay length of 7,694 meters in KwaiTsing Port,
providing currently an estimated capacity of 21 millionTEUs per annum. With additional land support, Kwai
Tsing Port will be able to increase its handling capacity to at least 24 millionTEUs per annum.
• Equipped with the latest quay cranes capable of handling 24-across container vessels and an alongside
water draught of 15.5 meters, the Hong Kong container terminals are ready to handle the latest generation
of container ships. At present, construction works are being carried out by the Hong Kong SAR Government
to deepen the Rambler Channel and its approaching channel to 17 meters. Upon completion, it will further
enhance the vessel handling capability of KwaiTsing Port.

Shipping
• Hong Kong is one of several hub ports serving the South-East and East Asia region,
and is an economic gateway to mainland China.
• Hong Kong set a record in its container throughput in 2007 by handling 23.9 million
TEUs (20-foot equivalent units of containers), maintaining its status as the largest
container port serving southern China and one of the busiest ports in the world.
• Some 456,000 vessels arrived in and departed from Hong Kong during the year,
carrying 243 million tonnes of cargo and about 25 million passengers.
• The average turnaround time for container vessels in Hong Kong is about 10 hours.
For conventional vessels working in mid-stream at buoys or anchorages, it is 42 and
52 hours respectively.
Ports and harbours
• The port of Hong Kong has always been a key factor in the development and prosperity of the
special administrative region, which is strategically located on the Far East trade routes and is in
the geographical centre of the fast-developing Asia-Pacific Basin.
• The sheltered harbour provides good access and a safe haven for vessels calling at the port from
around the world. In terms of tonnage of shipping using its facilities, cargo handled and the
number of passengers carried, Hong Kong is undoubtedly one of the major ports of the world.
• TheVictoria Harbour is one of the busiest ports in the world. An average of 220,000 ships visit
the harbour each year, including both oceanliners and river vessels, for both goods and
passengers.
• The container port in Hong Kong is one of the busiest in the world,The Kwai ChungTerminal
operates 24 hours a day.Together with other facilities inVictoria Harbour, they handled more
than 20 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in 2005. Some 400 container liners serve
Hong Kong weekly, connecting to over 500 destinations around the world.

  • 3. The Ports of Hong Kong • The Port of Hong Kong, located by the South China Sea, is a deepwater seaport dominated by trade in containerized manufactured products, and to a lesser extent raw materials and passengers. • A key factor in the economic development of Hong Kong, the natural shelter and deep waters ofVictoria Harbour provide ideal conditions for berthing and the handling of all types of vessels. • It is one of the busiest ports in the world, in the three categories of shipping movements, cargo handled and passengers carried.
  • 4. KwaiTsing Container Port • KwaiTsing Port is home to nine container terminals that are financed and owned by five private operators, they are: Hong Kong InternationalTerminals Limited, ModernTerminals Limited, COSCO-HITTerminals (Hong Kong) Limited, Asia ContainerTerminals Limited and Goodman DP World. Each operator independently undertakes its own commercial arrangements with its shipping line customers • The Hong Kong container terminals are renowned for their efficiency. In year 2013, KwaiTsing Port handled over 17.1 millionTEUs, roughly about three-quarters of the total container throughput of Hong Kong. • Altogether, there are 24 container berths with a total quay length of 7,694 meters in KwaiTsing Port, providing currently an estimated capacity of 21 millionTEUs per annum. With additional land support, Kwai Tsing Port will be able to increase its handling capacity to at least 24 millionTEUs per annum. • Equipped with the latest quay cranes capable of handling 24-across container vessels and an alongside water draught of 15.5 meters, the Hong Kong container terminals are ready to handle the latest generation of container ships. At present, construction works are being carried out by the Hong Kong SAR Government to deepen the Rambler Channel and its approaching channel to 17 meters. Upon completion, it will further enhance the vessel handling capability of KwaiTsing Port.
