Tuesday, 7 August 12
8. Introduction
Which is more ideal?
• The Pedagogy of the 21st Century
Teaching and Learning informing and
driving the Learning Space Design?
More ideal, if supported by all stakeholders.
OR
• Designing a 21st Century Teaching and
Learning Space and hoping it fits the
school pedagogy or using it as a driver
to alter existing pedagogies?
Not the ideal way, but it does happen!

9. Key Questions for this session.
• What are the links between
Pedagogy & Learning Spaces?
• What processes can you use to
align Pedagogy with Learning
Spaces?
• What’s the role of ICT in
Learning Space design?
Tuesday, 7 August 12
10. • What I would like you to get out of
this session.
• That you see the importance of the
link between Pedagogy & Learning
Spaces.
• That you have a realisation that
different stakeholders [Principals /
Teachers / Students / School
Community] often have different
views about how learning spaces
should be designed.
Tuesday, 7 August 12
11. • What different stakeholders might think.

Compilation. p.20

12. • What I would also like you to get
out of this session.
• That you see an example of a
process used in the case study that
may be useful if you are re-designing
a teaching and learning space.
• That a good re-design project doesn’t
necessarily cost a large amount of
money.
• That there are lots of resources
available to assist you in the process
of learning space design.
Tuesday, 7 August 12
13. • What I would also like you to get out
of this session.
• Look at the positives, not just
the negatives.

design a teaching and learning
space on a bigger scale.....

Planner

16. Part One
• What’s the link between
Pedagogy & Learning Spaces
anyway?
Tuesday, 7 August 12
17. • The links between Pedagogy &
Learning Spaces.
• Teaching and learning requires appropriate physical
and virtual spaces for those activities.
• We think about this for specialist teaching and
learning spaces, but often not for the generalist
or home group teaching and learning spaces.

18. • What type of learning do you value
and want to encourage?
• 21st century learning
encourages the use of a
variety of teaching methods
to meet the individual needs
of students.
Tuesday, 7 August 12
19. • What spaces and resources will you
need to do the following:
• Social & collaborative learning?
• Integrated Curriculum?
• Student-directed / teacher-directed
learning?
• Independent learning?
• Project work?
• Direct Instruction?

21. Part Two
• What process can you use to
align your Pedagogy with your
Learning Spaces?
Tuesday, 7 August 12
22. • A process for a re-design of a
learning space to a school’s pedagogy.
• It’s not about one person’s view.
• All stakeholders need involvement.
• What is the current school vision
and what it will be like in the near
future?
• Read widely and listen extensively.
• Visit other learning spaces and talk
to the stakeholders.
Tuesday, 7 August 12
23. • A process for a re-design of a
learning space to a school’s pedagogy.
•
Ask lots of questions and then ask
more.
• Build a network of people to assist
you.
• Be aware that despite great
planning, you will have to make
quick decisions.
• Work out a variety of ways to
involve all stakeholders.
Tuesday, 7 August 12
24. • A process for a re-design of a
learning space to a school’s pedagogy.
• Break apart some key school
documents.
• How can your “new” learning
space better meet some of these
directions?
• Survey Stakeholders.
• Develop Planning Principles as to
what us important to the project.
Tuesday, 7 August 12
25. • Processes to align Pedagogy with
Learning Spaces.
• An audit of the aims of this project against school documentation such
as the school’s Values and Beliefs, Strategic Plan 2012-2015,
Annual Implementation Plan 2012 [AIP], and ICT/eLearning
Plan 2011 has indicated the usefulness of this project will in meeting
the current Key Improvement Strategies in the current AIP of
the school. It will greatly assist listed actions in that plan such as
• Offering students a wide range of eLearning activities in all domains through
the introduction of online activities for all P- 6 students this will include finding
resources on school intranet, Moodle, Ultranet and recording and responding
to what they have learnt using information products, blogs, wikis.
• Introduction of collaborative online projects including SuperClubsPlus,
Global2Blogs, Moodle and the Ultranet as relevant.
• This project also supports the school in its accreditation process as an
eSmart school, which sets positive policies, modeling and behaviors around
Digital Citizenship.

26. • A process for a re-design of a
learning space to a school’s pedagogy.
• Develop your surveys to cover the
following:
• School directions & “new”
learning space.
• How teachers will operate in it.
• How students will operate in it.
• How the community might
operate in it.

27. Develop some planning principles for the
project from these surveys & focus groups.
1. Planning Principles for the Williamstown PS project
Criteria dominantly influenced by Leadership:
1.6 Connected to the world beyond the confines of the school.
1.9 Consisting of appropriate amenities and equipment.
Criteria dominantly influenced by Practice:
1.11 Conducive to exploration, imagination and creativity.
Criteria dominantly influenced by Leadership & Practice:
1.4 Interesting, stimulating and relevant to all students.
1.5 Flexible, varied and resource based.
1.10 Conducive to discussion interaction and collaboration.
1.12 Well integrated technologies into learning sequences in meaningful ways.

28. • A process for a re-design of a
learning space to a school’s pedagogy.
• Analyse your survey results:
• What trends are there?
• Are these trends similar or different
to your pre-conceptions?
• What did you learn from the survey?
• Explore some of the survey findings
through teacher and student focus
groups.
Tuesday, 7 August 12
29. Part Three
• What’s the role of ICT in this?
Tuesday, 7 August 12
30. • The role of I.C.T. in all of this.
• Multiliteracies
• 21st Century is technology rich, so
should these learning spaces.
Students should therefore have
access to a variety of technologies
available to them.
• Learning Management Systems
• The use of an LMS [such as Moodle,
Ultranet] is critical for
24/ 7 learning, Blended Learning,
Personalised learning etc.
Tuesday, 7 August 12
33. • Plan The Move In!
• Celebrate the new space!
• Offer teacher professional development
in the new space.
• Model how the space will work to
teachers and students.
• Teaching & Learning in the new space
may take some adjustment.
• Be prepared to make some minor
changes to the space if necessary.
• Evaluate the space in 6 -12 months
time.
