Why would you use it? Access to a GLOBAL audience enabling many voices F R E E!!! (in most cases) Your ideas and messages can be shared & spread very quickly  Can take on a creative life of its own Very high profile – the latest ‘buzz’ Portrays the human voice of your organization  You want share ideas in progress and let others join in and help It may be messy – so be prepared to deal with this  You are already clear in your aims, but open to contributions
Why wouldn’t you use it? Tracking sites can be time consuming – so have a clear plan Needs fast internet connection (ADSL / Fibre) – rural issues Can be intimidating if not used to using the internet / technology Fickle – constantly changing ‘current fashionable product’ Not there to be controlled – groups may take your message and rebroadcast it, so it is important to listen to the social networks Be prepared for your organisation to change how it works Looser control on organisation message and authorization - won’t work if your message is written in stone, not electricity  Invest time in staff learning new skills and the time to make it an organizational habit

  • 16. NOW - ENGAGEMENT Using the cards think of : Possible engagement methods Ways you’d like to work Ideas that could help the group --- Each card has a value (in GREEN ) - total mustn’t be more than 10 Spend TEN minutes on this
  • 17. THEN - TOOLS Use these cards to think of social media tools to help you. Mailing lists Web forum Blog, Twitter, Youtube etc. --- Each card has a value (in YELLOW ) - total mustn’t be more than 10 Spend TEN minutes on this Ask if you’re not sure what one is or how to use it
  • 18. FINALLY - RESOURCES You will need to find the resources for these initiatives. These cards list various ways to achieve this: Grant funding Volunteer support Selling services --- Each card has a value (in RED ) – total must be 20 or less Spend TEN minutes on this

  • 21. Why would you use it? Access to a GLOBAL audience enabling many voices F R E E!!! (in most cases) Your ideas and messages can be shared & spread very quickly Can take on a creative life of its own Very high profile – the latest ‘buzz’ Portrays the human voice of your organization You want share ideas in progress and let others join in and help It may be messy – so be prepared to deal with this You are already clear in your aims, but open to contributions
  • 22. Why wouldn’t you use it? Tracking sites can be time consuming – so have a clear plan Needs fast internet connection (ADSL / Fibre) – rural issues Can be intimidating if not used to using the internet / technology Fickle – constantly changing ‘current fashionable product’ Not there to be controlled – groups may take your message and rebroadcast it, so it is important to listen to the social networks Be prepared for your organisation to change how it works Looser control on organisation message and authorization - won’t work if your message is written in stone, not electricity Invest time in staff learning new skills and the time to make it an organizational habit

  2. I’d be the last one to say this approach isn’t working – because clearly it is and community development and engagement work has been taking place for years with success. But how can Social Media / Web 2.0 / New Media complement this work and take it to another level to make it even better

  4. Firstly a brief introduction – Using IT with Communities
  5. Standard Community Development stuff really Get alongside all members of the group Find out what they are trying to achieve, what are the issues they face
  6. Don’t build it and hope people will flock to your new website or social media idea You need to first find out what they want build it show it to them help them to use it then support them afterwards Who are the key players, where do they hang out, are they obvious or do you need to search for them?
  7. Do BETTER Things and Do things BETTER, but not replace the things that you are already doing well! Strategy = Plan = Roadmap. Its just a statement of “we are here”, “we want to be there”, “how can we make it happen”
  8. Try them out, ask others, see what similar communities do Remember that these work alongside your existing methods of working with communities What tools are out there, who can show us (e-champions, Digital Mentors, Community Voices), play in the playroom of toys, experiment with the free stuff, see what other communities have done
  9. Very important – it is some ones role to keep the network running, the conversations replied to, the content fresh ... so often this gets neglected. Its NOT a case of install and forget Sustain, Monitor, Respond, Improve If you don’t then others will come in and fill your space
  10. e.g. Young people not attending school or isolation of older people
  11. The values have been chosen in some cases to reflect the complexity of the engagement method or the tool. They give an indication of not just the money that may need to be invested but also the manual time and effort they may need. If you think of any Engagement methods or Tools that aren’t on any of the cards then you can write your own on the “Your Idea” cards, these have a value of zero points ... But you may be asked to explain why you choose this idea to us all!
  12. The values have been chosen in some cases to reflect the complexity of the engagement method or the tool. They give an indication of not just the money that may need to be invested but also the manual time and effort they may need. If you think of any Engagement methods or Tools that aren’t on any of the cards then you can write your own on the “Your Idea” cards, these have a value of zero points ... These are not to replace existing ways of working with communities, but to look at new ideas that social media technology offers that could make the work more effective.
