The 5 Most Common Store-Bought Food Accompaniments
You Can Make at Home
1. Jams, Jellies and Spreads
When berries around, you gotta make jam. It's a great way to keep their goodness going all
throughout the year. Making your own jam is so much healthier as compared to grocery store
jams. If the idea of canning intimidates you, make freezer jam. It takes minutes to make, and
requires no special equipment.
Mixed Berry Jam Recipe
Ingredients: Quantity
Frozen raspberries 400 gm
Frozen blackberries 300 gm
Frozen blueberries 300 gm
Water 500 ml
Fresh lemon juice 125 ml
Sugar 880 gm
Method
1. Combine berries with the water and the juice in a large
saucepan, bring to a boil.
2. Reduce heat, simmer uncovered, 20 minutes.
3. Add sugar, stir over heat, without boiling, until sugar
dissolves.
4. Boil uncovered stirring occasionally, about 15 minutes or
until jam jells when tested.
5. Pour hot jam into hot sterilized jars and seal while hot.
*Jam is based on one or more types of fruit. The fruit is
cooked until tender, sugar is added, then the mixture is
cooked until it will jell, or become thick enough to spread
when it is served at room temperature.
2. Tomato Kechup
Homemade tomato sauce is so much better than anything you can buy at the store. Load up on
tomatoes when they're in season. Then, make enough sauce to last you a year. In fact, you can
just pull out your crockpot, and it'll do most of the work for you.
Ketchup Recipe
Ingredients: Quantity
Canned peeled tomatoes, ground      800 gm
Water                                                       1/2 cup
White sugar                                             2/3 cup
White vinegar                                          3/4 cup
Onion powder                                        1  tsp
Garlic powder                                         ½  tsp
Salt                                                            13/4  tsp
Celery salt                                                1/8 tsp
Mustard powder                                     1/8 tsp
Black pepper, finely ground                  ¼ tsp
Clove                                                         1 no.
Method
1. Pour ground tomatoes into a saucepan.
2. Add water,  sugar, vinegar, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, celery salt,
mustard powder, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and whole clove; whisk to
combine.
3. Cook on high, uncovered, until mixture is reduced by half and very thick, 4-5
hours.  Stir every hour.
4. Smooth the texture of the ketchup using an immersion blender, about 20
seconds.
5. Ladle the ketchup into a fine strainer and press mixture with the back of a
ladle to strain out any skins and seeds.
6. Transfer the strained ketchup to a bowl. Cool completely before tasting to
adjust salt, black pepper, or cayenne pepper. 
3. Apple Sauce
Homemade applesauce is out-of-this-world good and ridiculously easy to make. If you know how
to peel an apple and turn on the stove, you can make applesauce. Seriously, it's that easy. Just
follow these simple instructions to make your first batch.
Apple Sauce Recipe
Ingredients: Quantity
Apples  - peeled, cored and chopped  1 ½ cups
Water                                                         1/6 cup
Ground  cinnamon                                  1 pinch
Ground cloves                                          1 pinch
White sugar                                               1 tbsp
Method:
1. In a 2 quart saucepan over medium heat,
combine apples, water, cinnamon, and cloves.
Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer 10
minutes. Stir in sugar, and simmer 5 more
minutes.
2. Pass through a strainer or liquidise. 
4. Mayonnaise
Mayonnaise has always been one of our favorite condiments, but while the store-bought stuff is
a convenient and cheap option, it is filled with soybean or vegetable oil, preservatives and
chemicals. Homemade, healthy mayo, on the other hand, is packed with protein and good fats,
and it tastes delicious! 
Mayonnaise Recipe
Ingredients: Quantity
Egg yolk                                   1 no
Vinegar                                    1 tsp
Salt, white pepper as reqd.
English mustard                     1/8 tsp
Vegetable oil                           120 ml
Method:
1. Place the yolk, vinegar, salt, pepper &
mustard in a clean dry emulsified sauce.

Caramel Sauce Recipe
Ingredients: Quantity
Dark brown sugar 1 cup
Cream ½ cup
Butter 4 tbsp
Salt or Sea salt pinch
Vanilla extract 1 tsp
Method
1. Mix the brown sugar, cream, butter and salt
in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
2. Cook while whisking gently for 5 to 7 minutes,
until it gets thicker.
3. Add the vanilla and cook another minute to
thicken further. Turn off the heat, cool slightly
and pour the sauce into a jar. Refrigerate until
cold.

  • 11. Caramel Sauce Recipe Ingredients: Quantity Dark brown sugar 1 cup Cream ½ cup Butter 4 tbsp Salt or Sea salt pinch Vanilla extract 1 tsp Method 1. Mix the brown sugar, cream, butter and salt in a saucepan over medium-low heat. 2. Cook while whisking gently for 5 to 7 minutes, until it gets thicker. 3. Add the vanilla and cook another minute to thicken further. Turn off the heat, cool slightly and pour the sauce into a jar. Refrigerate until cold.
