Importance of water
•Universal solvent and foundation of biological activities.
-For cell signaling.
-Enzyme activation.
•Key role in digestion.
•Transportation of nutrients.
•Removal of water products from the body.
•Lubrication of the body.
• Regulation of the body metabolism and temperature.
•2/3 of human body is constituted by water.
Water in the body
Water occupies 68 per cent of the body. Water is there in and around
the cells. The water in the cells is called intra cellular fluid. Extra
cellular fluid exists in different parts of the body in various forms.
1. Plasma.
2. Interstitial fluid, which is in between the cells.
3. Cerebrospinal fluid.
4. Serous fluid.
5. Synovial fluid-- the fluid in the gaps between joints.
6. Digestive juices.
7. Urine.
Functions of the body and
water
Day time
• Digestion – adequate water
needed for production of
digestive juices.
• Transportation of digested
food: lot of water needed
for the digested food to
reach cells.
• Water is needed for the
conversion of food to
energy.
Night time
• Purging of waster materials
in the body is mainly during
the night time where water
is needed to dissolve waste
products.
• Body repair itself mainly
during night and it need
substantial amount of
water.
What is water therapy?
•Water therapy is a natural treatment for controlling diseases and
keeping body hydrated by drinking water as per the proper instructions
and duration mentioned.
•Its uses have been recorded in the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman
civilization.
•In mid 19th century water cure was popular in Europe, U.K, US.
•The concept of water therapy is not new in Ayurveda it can be seen
elaborately in Anandakanda ( written in 16th century) as
Ushapaana rasaayana.

Kidneys absorb the necessary water and discharge excess

1. Expulsion of the consumed water as urine with out additional
medications.
2. Feeling of good health for the individual.
3. After voiding of urine feeling of hunger.
• If the regimen of usha paana rasayana is properly undertaken then the
person will feel
1. Healthy
2. Easy to sit
3. Vomited water devoid of abnormalities.
4. Excretion of natural wastes.
• One should not consume tambula till the water consumed is
expelled out as urine.
• Only after uriantion one should do taila abhyanga.

dugdha, etc for the pacification of vata.
•The water can also be consumed one muhurtha after intake of
medications as per the disease condition.
• water can be consumed after the digestion of previously
consumed water, food and also at night.
• In conditions like jwara when there is a need for
upavasa. The water consumption must be reduced to half
the prescribed quantity and if possible consume very
laghu aahara at night or else there will be shoshana of jala
in jathara.
• At the time of upavasa as part of rituals then one shall
consume 1 pala of ksheera at night.
• One with good digestive power and proper formation of
aahara rasa must try to consume ½ to 1 anjali of water
daily to maintain the same.
