2. Learning Aims:
• All of you will know about editing techniques
• Most of you will be able to discuss examples of
how the technique could be produced.
• Some of you will be able to evaluate why the
technique would be useful in a film sequence.
3. • Write about the developments and
conventions of editing.
• Use examples to evidence your learning.
• Write this in a blog post.
• You can either split your post into two or use
examples to discuss all of the points, neither
way is better than the other just write in the
way that helps you explain what all of the
points mean.
4. What do you need to
• Cover all the sub headings in the brief.
• Use examples
• Use the correct terms as highlighted in
the brief.
• Consider the grading criteria before you
submit your assignment.
6. Techniques and transitions
• A technique is something you can
produce with cuts alone.
• Transitions are produced thorough the
use of added effects, to change over
from one shot to the next.
7. Techniques
• Montage
• Parallel Editing
• Seamless Editing
• Jump cutting
• Cut aways
• Point of view shot/ reaction shot
• Providing and with holding information
• Editing rhythm
• Cutting to a soundtrack
• Flash back (manipulation of time/ space)
10. Parallel Editing
• Is when two storylines happen at the same time, the editor cuts back
and forth between the scenes.
• This is similar to cross cutting, but the difference is that cross cutting
tends to cut back and forth from two perspectives but not necessarily
two different scenes.

11. Seamless Editing or continuity Editing
• The purpose of continuity editing or seamless editing is to smooth
over the change from one shot to the next, so the cuts are as
seamless as possible.

12. Jump Cutting
A Jump Cut is when parts of the action are removed to give the impression of a sudden jump in the
movement.
A Jump cut can also be from one scene to the next, as it removes unnecessary movement and parts of
the story we don’t need to see.

13. Cut away
• A Cut Away is clips are placed in- between a shot. For example this image
above has been cut so that in between is a shot of a cat, this gives the
impression that the man is looking away at a cat. The shot you use as a cut
away needs to be away from the person and cut to something else.
15. Fade
• A Fade is an editing effect, that when applied slowly sends an image
into darkness. Sometimes fades can be applied so that the images
appear to evaporate into a white background.
16. Dissolve or Cross-dissolve
• A Dissolve is an editing effect, that merges two shots together so that
one fades out as another fades in. As you can see above the two
images bleed into each other in the middle this creates a smooth
transition.
17. Wipe
• A wipe is when one shot appears to wipe away to reavel another one
underneath.
