Evaluation task #1
1.
2. This is the scene from “Aviator”,
Oscar-nominated movie by Martin
Scorsese. Even though it’s not a
thriller, this moment is very intense.
In our thriller we also wanted to use
a bird’s eye view shot, just like in
“Aviator”. However, we weren’t
shooting in studio and the roof
space was not unlimited, that’s why
we didn’t make this shot. But I think
our substitution for that is quite
good. So we follow conventions of
our genre here.
3. This is a scene from “The Shawshank
Redemption”. This is not a thriller
again. However, the mood of our scene
is much to do with this one. In order to
create tension before the hanging, there
is a close up on the feet.
We used the same idea in our
thriller since it gives us a sense
of foreboding while not being
over the top. This shot is used in
a lot of thrillers. It is because it
makes the audience to wait in
anticipation for the moment
they know is going to happen.
So again we follow the
conventions of tension and,
thus, thriller.
4. This scene is from Kidulthood. The shot of just
the feet after the hanging is incredibly emotive
as it shows the vulnerability of the character
and the lifelessness of the body.
We used the same shot in our thriller since it indeed
indicates helplessness of the situation and almost
vicariously (we don’t see the face) shows that the
person is not going to be alive. That probably
deepens the emotion.
Moreover, there is an object in both of the scenes which drops after
hanging. That again makes the emotion deeper since we feel how
person lost something. It shows death more expressively.
5. We have almost the same shot of the feet
without showing a face leaving the audience
to guess what that person is. However, we
didn’t include any specific details, symbols,
like Quentin Tarantino did, this shot was only
to create tension and curiosity. But we follow
the conventions of thriller here.
This is a scene from “Kill Bill”, a brilliant thriller.
We see how a woman goes through a corridor seeing
only her feet, not the face. The shot is very
symbolical: clothes is white as if she was the most
kind and merciful person in the world, however, an
umbrella is red which symbolizes blood, that she is
actually very dangerous.
6. Our thriller is called “Gradual Decline”, however,
it’s hard to tell the difference between titles of real
movies and our sequence. This kind of titles give an
idea of what the movie contains meaning what type
of movie is that. And also this contrast between
black background and white titles makes the name
to stand out vividly, which indicates its importance.
