Open Educational Resources: Building a Culture of Sharing

On 29 January 2015, Leicester City Council, in partnership with De Montfort University, held a free day conference for schools focusing on finding, using, creating and sharing Open Educational Resources (OER). The event builds on the council’s recently released OER guidance and resources, which can be downloaded from http://schools.leicester.gov.uk/openeducation The conference opened with panel presentations and a Q& A session. Marieke Guy discusses the international context of OER and open education communities.

This presentation introduces a range of contrasting initiatives that have aimed to promote open education policy and practice in Scotland, England and Wales over the last five years. These include the UKOER Programme, Open Scotland, OER Wales, the Welsh Open Education Declaration of Intent, the Scottish Open Education Declaration and the Opening Educational Practice in Scotland project. The paper will reflect on the different approaches taken by these initiatives and ask what Germany can learn from the experiences of open education practitioners in the UK.

The Students participating in this project had the opportunity to meet fellow mates from other European (Mediterranean) countries and communicate with them via e-mail or via instant messaging. They developed friendly relations with each other and shared details about their daily lives, traditions, cultures, perceptions, ideas, lifestyle.Establishing a common point of view of the past, students explored how the Mediterranean Sea is still the bridge between different cultures and religions. All students developed their English language vocabulary and skills. They also developed their intercultural skills, exchanged ideas, gifts and postcards and also made use of a variety of resources in order to upload powerpoint presentations, documents, files and images about their countries on twinspace. Last but not least students familiarised themselves with working in a virtual environment, identified and discussed the challenges they face living and working in them. The most important thing is that they made new friends and they gained insights from online school collaborations which will be valuable and worth remembering a life time.

The AGNSW has a record of strong engagement with regional SW. However more can be done to enhance and extend our relationship with regional partners and audiences. In support of the NSW government Create in NSW policy, AGNSW have developed a Regional & Western Sydney Engagement Plan. This ambitious plan was informed by regional engagement forums held across the state with significant contributions from partners in regional galleries. This presentation will share key themes that emerged through consultation, the Gallery’s engagement strategy towards 2021 and case studies of hugely successful projects such as Art Pathways and the Home Aboriginal Art project.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
