Menopause: Natural Solutions That Work
1.
2. Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her menstrual periods permanently
cease for a minimum of 6 consecutive months. This usually occurs around the
age of 50. Menopause is caused by the cessation of function of the ovaries. There
is no longer ovulation or hormone production. This is sometimes referred to as the
“change of life.”
Even though this is a normal part of the
life cycle for women, the symptoms of
hormonal decline can be significant.
What is Menopause?
3. A decline in a woman’s natural occurring progesterone and estrogen can cause a
wide range of frustrating symptoms and side effects:
Hot flashes
Vaginal dryness
Night sweats
Sleepless nights
Depression
Reduced libido
Loss of enjoyment of sex
Bone loss
At Hotze Health & Wellness Center, our goal is to
help you resolve menopausal symptoms.

Migraines
Increased incidence of
urinary incontinence
(inability to control the
bladder)
Vaginal atrophy
(weakness)
Frequent urination
4. Underlying Cause of Menopause
The underlying cause of menopause is the inevitable decline of a woman’s hormones.
Estrogen and progesterone levels both decline with age, but progesterone declines much
more rapidly. By the time a woman reaches menopause, her progesterone level can be a mere
1/120th of the level she experienced in her early twenties. When a woman does not
ovulate, her ovaries produce no progesterone at all.
Estrogen levels also decline. This decline leads to the symptoms associated with peri-
menopause and often prompts the search for menopause treatment.
A woman’s postmenopausal estrogen level may remain at 40% of the level she experienced in
early adulthood, because, while her ovaries no longer produce estrogen, her fat cells do.
A woman’s ovaries also produce testosterone which peaks at ovulation. Testosterone
production also ceases at menopause.
5. Estrogen Dominance
What is estrogen dominance?
When a woman has a deficiency in progesterone, estrogen is the dominant hormone.
Estrogen dominance often occurs before and after menopause, since the decline of
hormones can begin in earlier years and quickly progresses after a woman enters
menopause.
There are many unfavorable side effects of estrogen dominance (lack of progesterone:)
•Premenstrual headaches, often migraine in nature
•Fluid retention
•Fibrocystic breast disease
•Uterine fibroids
•Menorrhagia (heavy, painful menstrual periods)
•Endometriosis
•Clinical hypothyroidism
•Bone loss
Additionally, the incidence of breast cancer increases when women become estrogen
dominant.
6. Benefits of Bioidentical Progesterone
Supplementation for Estrogen Dominance
Progesterone:
•Balances estrogen, thereby eliminating
estrogen dominance
•Enables body to properly utilize thyroid hormone
•Reverses osteoporosis
•Relieves fluid retention
•Relieves migraines
•Enhances mood and relieves depression or anxiety
•Ameliorates breast tenderness
•Alleviates fibrocystic breast disease
•Relieves endometriosis
•Enhances sleep
•Increases libido
•Precursor of other hormones
•Protects against breast cancer and endometrial
cancer
7. Surgical menopause occurs when a woman undergoes a hysterectomy and oophorectomy
(removal of the ovaries). All too often, physicians view this as the only option for
dysfunctional uterine bleeding or fibroids. Unlike natural menopause, surgically induced
menopause causes an immediate loss of progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone
production, rather than the natural, gradual decline that occurs in these hormones over the
years. As a result, a woman will feel a dramatic change in her body as she experiences the
symptoms of rapid, hormonal decline.
Even if the ovaries have been spared the surgeon’s
knife, ovarian dysfunction or atrophy commonly
occurs within two years following removal of the
uterus, causing a predictable decline in hormone
levels. This can occur even if you still have your
ovaries in place, because the blood supply to the
ovaries may be compromised by the removal of the
uterus and fallopian tubes.
Total Hysterectomy:
No Real Solution
8. Surgery:
• Hysterectomy – According to the CDC, “Approximately 600,000 hysterectomies
are performed annually in the United States and an estimated 20 million U.S.
women have had a hysterectomy.”
Synthetic or counterfeit “hormone” drugs:
• Premarin - Even though this medication may be “natural” for pregnant mares
(which is where it’s name is derived from), it contains hormones that are not
biologically identical to those of what a woman produces and uses, making it a poor
solution for women facing menopausal symptoms.
• Prempro – Major studies, such as the Women’s Health Initiative in the United
States and the Million Women Study in Great Britain, have documented that these
drugs increase the risk of life-threatening ailments such as breast cancer, heart
attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism and Alzheimer’s disease.
Prescription Drugs:
• Antidepressants
• Anti-anxiety
None of these options resolve the underlying hormonal decline which causes menopausal
symptoms. Additionally, they all have many adverse side effects.
Conventional “Solutions”
• Sleep medications
• Bisphosphonates (class of bone loss drugs)
9. Optimal Solution
Since the underlying cause of menopause is a decline of the body’s natural
occurring hormones, the best menopause treatment is to replenish your body with
the same identical hormones that your ovaries used to make in adequate amounts.
These are known as bio-identical hormones.
Bio-identical hormones are molecularly identical to the hormones your body
produces and uses. Below are biologically identical hormones often used to treat
menopausal symptoms naturally, effectively and safely.
• Bio-identical estrogen
• Bio-identical progesterone
• Bio-identical testosterone
