1. Top 5 Feminist
icons in Television
Bored of seeing television regularly portraying women as nagging, dim-witted finger waggers?
Well fear not, this list is great proof that women can stand proud in television.
2. 1. Rory Gilmore, Gilmore Girls
If there is any show that depicts feminism at its
finest, Gilmore Girls is definitely one of them.
Bringing together a cast of strong female characters,
all different and equally wonderful, it was difficult to
choose just one for this list. Rory Gilmore however,
has to be the number one choice. Raised by her
single mother, 16-year-old Rory is the epitome of a
'golden child'. She's a prime example of ‘intelligence
being cool’. With her strong political views and
intelligence, she hopes to pursue a career in
journalism, which she ultimately achieves.
Classy, intelligent and strong-willed, Rory definitely
belongs on this list.
3. 2. Lisa Simpson, The Simpsons
No your eyes are not deceiving you, there really is an
eight-year-old on this list but no one can deny that
Lisa Simpson is quite frankly, a hero of feminism.
A clean-eating, book-reading little girl who can't
decide whether she loves or hates her Malibu Stacy
doll, Lisa is one wise kid.
Her understanding of the world around her has
regularly gotten the better of her resulting in
arrogance, but always ends in a resolution.
She is a feminist marvel and a force to be reckoned
with, so don't dare question her place here.
4. 3. Liz Lemon, 30 Rock
Based on 30 Rock creator, Tina Fey; Lisa Lemon is an
advocate of being ‘single and proud’, college
educated and all for 'gay dudes being allowed to
adopt and have hybrid cars'. She also faces a
problem many 30 something’s face, the pressure to
adopt or have her own child. Whilst the idea to be
married and have kids mildly appeals to her, she
doesn't find it mandatory.
Lemon is a woman who knows what she wants and
isn't afraid to stand her ground on 'controversial'
issues which is why she makes this list.
5. 4. Kerry Hennessy, 8 Simple Rules
While being the stereotypical middle child of the
family who always find something to complain
about, Kerry is regularly seen whining about how ‘no
one understands her’, but is also seen to have the
strongest values and willingness out of the rest of
her siblings.
Bookish, awkward, slightly anti-social and
opinionated, Kerry would regularly break through
the moody teenager ‘thing’ by hosting protests
about how they should dress in school to organising
a sit in to save frogs being dissected in Biology class.
Kerry has no problem being loud or causing a scene
to get her views heard and will go after things until
she gets them.
6. 5. Femme Fatale, Powerpuff Girls
Yes, there is a villain on here. Femme Fatale earned
her name by being summarised as 'the feminist of all
feminists' with the radical views on how she believes
women should be treated.
In one episode she informs the Powerpuff Girls that
they are being used as women, but in the end, the
girls understand feminism better than Fatale,
believing that feminism is for equality between men
and women, not a superior race.
