LOCATION
Diu is a small coastal town located in the western part of India, in the state of Gujarat. It is an
island located in the Arabian Sea, off the southern coast of Gujarat. Diu was a Portuguese
colony until 1961, when it was incorporated into the Indian Union.
Diu is known for its beautiful beaches, historic forts, and Portuguese architecture. The town has
a rich cultural heritage and is home to a diverse population of Hindus, Muslims, and Christians.
The local language spoken in Diu is a mix of Gujarati, Hindi, and Portuguese.
Today, Diu is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over India and abroad.
The town is particularly famous for its pristine beaches, such as Nagoa Beach and Ghoghla

1535: The Portuguese established
a settlement in Diu and
constructed a fort to protect their
interests in the region.
1546: The Sultan of Gujarat,
Bahadur Shah, attacked Diu and
laid siege to the fort. However, the
Portuguese managed to repel the
attack and retain control of the
town.

CRONOLOGY
•1987: The government of India declared
Diu a union territory, separate from the
state of Gujarat.
•1990s: The government of India initiated
a program to develop Diu as a tourist
destination, leading to significant
investment in infrastructure, including
hotels, resorts, and water sports facilities.

2018: the first solar-powered
city in India, with all of its
electricity needs being met by
solar energy.
Present day: The town has a
population of approximately
44,000 people and is governed
by a local administration led by
an administrator appointed by
the central government.
