Working with the New Zealand
government, the U.S. military
conducted a series of tests around the
coasts of Auckland and New
Caledonia. The tsunami bomb was
considered as an alternative to
nuclear bombs.

5. Blowing Up The Water
Approximately 3,700 bombs were
detonated during the testing. The
mission was to create a 33-foot
tsunami that could devastate a
small coastal city.

7. Controlling Nature
Researchers learned that the
tsunami bomb could work after
all. All it takes is 10 large
offshore blasts, precisely
positioned, to trigger a huge tidal
wave.

9. Uncovering The Secret
This secret project was discovered
by Ray Waru, an author and
filmmaker, who found the
records buried in the New
Zealand national archives.

11. Building A Better Bomb
The project began in June 1944 based on an idea
from a Navy officer named E. A. Gibson. The
Navy’s blasting operations around the Pacific
islands sometimes produced large waves,
symptomatic of the coral reef bombing that was
being done in the area at the time to clear the
coast. Gibson saw the waves the bombs created,
and Project Seal was born.

U.S. military has the capability of producing a
tsunami on demand is true, but it isn't likely
they’re going to do it in wartime. The testing
revealed that it requires a large amount of
explosives, 2 million kilograms, and that bombs
have to be carefully placed in a line about 5
miles off the shore.

How much damage can a 30-foot wall of
water do? Ask Miyako city. A tsunami
landed here March 11, 2011. The 30-foot
wave was triggered by an earthquake
and caused mass devastation. Tsunamis
can become weapons of mass destruction
in the right hands.

However, that doesn't mean the
tsunami bomb is really an acceptable
alternative to the atomic bomb.
When it comes to mass devastation,
even weather cannot hope to
compete with the military.

16. Dropping The Bomb
The atomic bomb killed more than 73,000 people
and injured nearly 75,000. That’s out of a
starting population of 240,000. But the
devastation didn't even end there. When a bomb
like this is dropped, there is always a fallout. In
this case, it’s known as “atomic bomb disease.”
This causes radiation, so that even the
survivors of the event experience much lower
quality of life and shortened life in some cases.

17. About That Tsunami
Data shows that 401 people died in the 2011
tsunami, and over 900 boats were
destroyed. A total of 4,005 buildings were
destroyed as well. At its highest, the tsunami
reached 125 feet in height. This far surpasses
the man made tsunami, and still its
devastating effect is unmatched by the
atomic bomb.
