Description
This intense session trains you in the full design process of a piece of
furniture, normally a chair. You will start with conceptual development
and production of working drawings, and end with the building of a full-
scale prototype, as well as the exhibition of you work.
Learning Objectives
The primary objective of this design studio is to produce a piece of
furniture which draws inspiration from its Scandinavian context and
acheives maximum utility with the minimum material.
Through this process students develop their capabilities in:
• Development and refinement of design concepts
• Production of sketches as well as working drawings
• Construction of a full-scale prototype
• Craftsmanship in different materials
• Communication through exhibition and presentation
Required & Suggested Texts
Reading material for the course will be provided or can be found on DIS
Blackboard (forum.dis.dk). The readings include, but are not limited to:
• de Grier, Nicolai. Chairs Tectonics. København: Arkitektens Forlag, 2009.
(Provided- Intro also on Blackboard)
• Krogh, Erik. The Chair in the Space - The Space in the Chair, København:
Snedkernes Efterårsudstilling, 1984 (on Blackboard)
Prerequisites
Enrolment at a professional school/department of design or architecture
at the junior, senior, or graduate level. Prior experience with furniture
design, stationary power tools and hand tools is required.

Approach to Teaching
Studio instruction is a combination of one-on-one tutoring and
discussions in studio and in the workshop. The studios are organized
as vertical studios, meaning that students of different levels will be
taught within the same studio. Expectations will therefore relate to each
individual student and their respective level of experience.
The 7-week course is structured in four distinctive phases, building off of
the UK Design Council Double Diamond Design Process Model:
EXPLORATION phases in weeks 1-3
Phase 1: Discover (studio) - through lectures, field studies, studio
discussions and sketching students discover the scope of furniture design
and the first sketches of students own designs come to life and are
reviewed.
Phase 2: Define (study tour) - on the study tour further inspiration and
knowledge about Scandinavian furniture design and production is gained
and then the initial definition of the individual students design is taking
place in the journal each student is working on during the tour as well.
CREATION phases in weeks 4-7
Phase 3: Develop (studio) - after the study tour the scope of the craft
of eventually making the design in the workshop is developed in studio
discussions, 1:1 drawings, and considerations about materiality, joining,
finish, etc.
Phase 4: Deliver (workshop) - students move into the workshop to create
and deliver the actual full-scale prototype, resolving the final challenges
of the design through the process of making. Finally the prototypes
are presented to external reviewers, faculty and fellow students and
exhibited along with the creations of the other design disciplines from
the summer sessions.

Expectations of the Students
Students are expected to be fully engaged in the studio discourse, be
prepared for each individual desk critique and workshop session and to
invest time outside of studio hours developing projects. Students must
check DIS Blackboard daily (forum.dis.dk). The most current schedule
including last-minute changes will be maintained here. Readings and
other relevant course material will be posted here for downloading.
Due to workshop capacity, students, when in the workshop, are divided
into a morning group and an afternoon group with workshop hours 07:00
- 14:00 and 14:00 - 21:00 respectively.
The Assignment
The assignment is the design and building of an object for sitting made
from a given amount of material provided by DIS. The finished piece
cannot exceed 80 x 80 x 80 cm. The structure of the chair will take its
cue primarily from wood but can include other materials as well. Any
additional materials are at the student’s own cost. The program for
the chair is individual and decided by the student. It is possible to work
conceptually or to re-interpret a well-known type of chair. Through its
construction, the chair must have a visual and structural clarity, and
consequently express the conceptual idea. Students are expected to
use their sketchbook / visual journal for design development in order to
ensure process documentation.
Submission of Assignments
All presentation material must be supplemented with a digital submission
of the presentation boards. This requirement is necessary for grading
and archival purposes for DIS, as well as documentation you will need for
your own portfolio. Submission guidelines will be posted on Blackboard
prior to deadline.
Field Studies and Study Tours
The study tours of the Architecture and Design Program at DIS form an
integral part of the learning process. We travel to places to learn through
experience and through analysis. We travel to places to understand and
ultimately, to become better architects and designers. In the Furniture
Design Studio & Workshop particular focus is placed on visiting furniture
production facilities to facilitate an understanding of the production and
business side of the furniture design discipline in Scandinavia.
Field Studies
Half or one day field studies to sites of design interest as well as
contemporary case studies linked to the assignment.

Long Study Tour
The week-long study tour will expand your frame of personal experience
from Copenhagen to include sites in Sweden and Finland. This is an
opportunity to compare what you have studied thus far in Denmark with
a larger Scandinavian context and in turn with your previous experiences
from your home country. Visits will be to both contemporary and
historical sites to provide background for understanding the design
context you experience today.
Students prepare for the week-long study tour by carrying out a group
assignment prior to departure. See page 8 for more on this.
Shipment Option
Students can pay $300 to DIS to arrange shipment of their chair to the
US at the end of the semester. Please note, shipment will take at least
eight weeks. In order to secure the fixed price DIS can only ship chairs to
select destinations. A list of the select destinations will be published on
Blackboard. One chair only, no molds and no mock-ups.
At each destination one of the students shipping a chair will be chosen
as the addressee on the shipment. This is purely for delivery purposes.
Those students combined in each shipment should make arrangements
for pickup thereafter. Students need to supply DIS with their contact info
(name, address, e-mail, phone number). Payments must be made to DIS
Front Desk prior to departure from DIS on Sat August 1st, 2015.
Portfolio
Students are to bring with them two previous projects of their own choice,
in any form (slides, digital, photo copies, portfolios, etc.). These must be
submitted to FDS faculty by Wednesday, June 18. They will be used by the
faculty to be acquainted with the design skills of each student.
Exhibition
An open house exhibition will be held at the end of the semester in the
2nd Floor Lounge in F24 and V23. Works from all the Architecture and
Design studios as well as from the Furniture Design in Scandinavia course
will be exhibited.

from the middle of the 20th century are studied alongside trendy “New
Nordic” designs of today. Fundamentals of furniture design, such as scale,
dimension and proportion, are presented, along with the fundamentals
of the production of furniture, whether it be the craft approach or the
modern business based and industrialized approach.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this course students will be able to:
• Demonstrate an enhanced ability to formulate informed criticism on
furniture design based on analytical exercises, readings, in-class dis-
cussions, field trips, and case studies
• Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the characteristics of
Scandinavian furniture design and production
• Demonstate in-depth knowledge of selected Danish furniture
designers and their contributions to the development of the
characteristics of Scandinavian design

Visual Journal
The sketchbook is the tool to facilitate understanding and memory.
Designers (both professionals and students) have always carried
sketchbooks on their travels to analyze and document designs and places
which make an impression on them and, in turn, influence their design
work. Students are expected to independently visit, describe and analyze
objects from the study tours, showrooms, museums etc. Entries are to be
entered in the Visual Journal and evaluated as part of the course.
Study Tour Assignment
The study tours of the Architecture and Design Program at DIS form
an integral part of the learning process. We visit sites to experience
and analyze design, and to ultimately become better architects and
designers. Assignment 1 is an integral part of this endeavor. The
assignment is carried out in groups of 4-5 students. The assignment
consists of an in-depth research and analysis of a select piece of furniture
and a digital presentation of the analysis to fellow students in the
respective study tour group prior to travelling.
The framework for the research and analysis is a model developed by
Danish architect, Erik Nygaard, in his book, Architecture Understood. The
model and the specifics of the assignment are presented seperately.
Mid Term Exam
The mid term exam is an essay type two-hour exam which encourage
students to elaborate on their understanding of Scandinavian Furniture
Design through simple sketches and critical essays.
Expectations of the Students
Students are expected to be fully engaged in lectures, participate
actively in any discussions and actively maintain a visual journal as
prescribed. Required readings should be read before the applicable
lecture. Students must check DIS Blackboard daily (forum.dis.dk). The
most current schedule including last-minute changes will be maintained
here. Readings and other relevant course material will be posted here
for downloading.
Evaluation & Grading
The final grade is determined as follows:
20% Study Tour Assignment (group assignment)
