Volunteers and donors are feeling overworked, unappreciated, and underutilized leaving them to feel, well, empty. But, we didn’t mean to, right? With all that goes on in our nonprofits, stewardship sometimes gets overlooked. It’s not intentional, but it happens. And donor retention rates show it. According to the latest Fundraising Effectiveness project, only 19% of first –time donors stick around to give again the second year. And we lose $103 for every $100 we gain. No wonder feels like we can’t catch up. There is a solution: stewardship. In this presentation, learn to: •Spot donor and volunteer fatigue •Ask questions to better understand donor and volunteer satisfaction •Use easy tips to increase donor passion and reduce attrition.

In recent years, phrases like “culture of philanthropy” and “donor centricity” have hit the field by storm, often with budget-breaking strategies for implementation and little information about where to start when one may not be a decision-maker. Thus at the Johnson Center for Philanthropy's Brown Bag Lunch & Learn Series, I facilitated a discussion about the importance of donor relations when it comes to long-term fundraising success and ethical fundraising practices. I also talked about the role of fundraising in the context of arts and cultural organizations. The goal of the event was for participants to walk away with easy to understand ideas for their own organizations and volunteer roles. I discussed: Donor relations and fundraising from a historical perspective; How to integrate engaging donor relations practices into your fundraising program; Fund development challenges specific to membership-based organizations, arts and cultural organizations, and organizations that frequently request general operating funds.

Oludap is a multiplayer online strategic game that is based on the open-source (j)Ruby on Rails framework MADMASS (MAssively Distributed Multi Agent System Simulator). MADMASS simplifies the development of next-generation web applications by relying on methodologies from Artificial Intelligence and Multi-Agent Systems. In Oludap, players compete in real-time for limited resources in a shared environment. Oludap’s gameplay is episodic, meaning that small groups of users can play one-shot games. This type of games presents two challenges: 1. the episodic nature of the game-play may yield to rapid and unpredictable fluctuations in the workload that can make planning for IT infrastructures not sustainable; 2. the fact that players act on a shared environment generates a high level of contention on data thus, considering that consistency is a strong requirement, scalability may be at risk. In order to overcome these challenges, we are working to re-implement the data layer of the game on top of Hibernate OGM and Infinispan, in the framework of the Specific Targeted Research Project (STReP) Cloud-TM, which is co-financed by the European Commission through the contract no. 257784.

Mapping and digitizing archeological sites is an important task to preserve cultural heritage and to make it accessible to the public. Current systems for digitizing sites typically build upon static 3D laser scanning technology that is brought into archeological sites by humans. This is acceptable in general, but prevents the digitization of sites that are inaccessible by humans. In the field of robotics, however, there has recently been a tremendous progress in the development of autonomous robots that can access hazardous areas. ROVINA aims at extending this line of research with respect to reliability, accuracy and autonomy to enable the novel application scenario of autonomously mapping of areas of high archeological value that are hardly accessible.

Program code examples (known also as worked examples) play a crucial role in learning how to program. Instructors use examples extensively to demonstrate the semantics of the programming language being taught and to highlight the fundamental coding patterns. Programming textbooks allocate considerable space to present and explain code examples. To make the process of studying code examples more interactive, CS education researchers developed a range of tools to engage students in the study of code examples. These tools include codecasts (codemotion, codecast, elicasts), interactive example explorers (WebEx, PCEX), and tutoring systems (DeepTutor). An important component in all types of worked examples is code explanations associated with specific code lines or code chunks of an example. The explanations connect examples with general programming knowledge explaining the role and function of code fragments or their behavior. In textbooks, these explanations are usually presented as comments in the code or as explanations on the margins. The example explorer tools allow students to examine these explanations interactively. Tutoring systems, which engage students in explaining the code, use these model explanations to check student responses and provide scaffolding. In all these cases, to make a worked example re-usable beyond its presentation in a lecture, the explanations have to be authored by instructors or domain experts i.e., produced and integrated into a specific system. As the experience of the last 10 years demonstrated, these explanations are hard to obtain. Those already collected are usually “locked” in a specific example-focused system and can’t be reused. The purpose of this working group is to support broader re-used of worked examples augmented with explanations. Our current plan is to develop а standard approach to represent explained examples. This approach will enable an example created for any of the existing systems to be explored in a standard format and imported into any other example-focused system. We plan to follow a successful experience of the PEML working group focused on re-using programming exercises.
