Revolting Recipes
Objective:
• To be able to use imperatives to create an interesting recipe.
Saturday, 21 March 2015
What is an imperative?
It gives you an order or command – a bit like
Veruca Salt ordering her father.
They are direct and sharp.
Which word(s) is the imperative?
• Line up for assembly.
• Turn left at the traffic lights.
• Mix the flour and eggs together.
REMEMBER: A verb is a
doing word - it describes an
action. For example: I baked a
cake.
It is a bossy verb.
Give it to
me now!

• What do you notice about the
words used in the recipe?
• TASK: Create a mind map of
all the imperative verbs in the
recipe.
• CHALLENGE: Using a
different colour pen, think of
some synonyms that you
could use for five imperative
verbs and add them to your
mindmap.
Some examples of
imperative verbs
put stir whip
mix scoop whisk
place shake divide
take sieve pour
add boil
Your Revolting Recipe
• Complete your own draft recipe for a
revolting recipe using as many “ingredients”
as you can mix together.
• Remember to make it edible!
• Make sure you include imperative verbs!
• Decorate your recipe with pictures of the
“ingredients” you have included.
Swap
1. Swap with the person in front or behind you.
2. Read each others revolting recipes.
3. Underline where your partner has used imperative verbs.
4. Write down two things that you liked about your partner’s
work.
5. Write down one thing you wish they could have done or
that you would like to see added.

Editor's Notes

  1. Inform pupils that Saturday was Roald Dahl’s birthday and that this is being celebrated in schools across the country. Also tell them that this year is special as it is also the 50th Anniversary of Charlie and the Chocolate factory
  2. Youtube clip of Heston's lickable wallpaper for 1960s feast http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTxEeqYCLvs&NR=1&feature=fvwp video lasts for 3:19 mins
  3. Pupils work in pairs to identify the imperative verbs and create a mindmap in each of their books.
  4. Explain to the class that we will be creating a class recipe book and today we are drafting the recipes. There will be a competition between the classes with the best one winning a prize. Recipe books will be displayed on Yr 7 OE. These can be typed up either in your H12 lesson or as a homework task.
