Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04
The fish of these shoreline grounds, due perhaps to the greater large quantity of food right here, are
thought to be distinctly superior in good quality to those of the same kinds taken on the offshore
banks. The cod and the haddock, specially, of the Gulf of Maine are notably well conditioned species
of fish and are noted for their excellence.
The numbers presented in Dinner table 2 show only a fraction of the get from the Inner Grounds,
since they deal fully with the fares of fishing vessels of 5 net tons and over. There are thousands of
the so-called "licensed" or "under-tonned" boats, generally gill-netters, that take numerous pounds
from these oceans annually, principally cod and haddock.
On the Maine coast and across the line in New Brunswick there are many than 300 weirs which
furnished to American canners and smokers during the year 1923 (whose figures happen to be
chosen as representing an average season) 77,000,000 pounds of herring. About the coast of
Massachusetts there are 50 or more fish and weirs traps, and from the Isle of Shoals to Pemaquid
Part of Maine there are more than 50 floating traps in the various bays, on the points of offshore
islands, or even in the open sea, and all these have a rich harvest readily available waters. , there is
the lobster fishery, more important in the Gulf of Maine than anywhere else in america.too and Then
Of these various branches of the fisheries industries handful of statistics are available, yet we may
say that the figures of the 1919 census showed that the "under-ton" vessels mentioned landed
5,324,426 kilos of fish with the port of Boston, mostly of haddock and cod, and this the same type of
create in 1923 landed at Portland, Me., more than 3,000,000 pounds, primarily of ground species of
fish. We also know that every village, island, hamlet and town and city coupled this nearly 4,000
'miles of coast line will take its toll from the sea.
Lukes Rock and roll. This rock is situated S. by E. 3 miles from Moosabec Light, rounded in shape,
and about 1 mile in diameter. Depths are from 25 to 35 fathoms; the bottom isgravel and rocks, and
mud. This is mostly a small-motorboat fishing ground, but there is some vessel minn kota endura.
Hake are taken here from June to September, inclusive; cod are present concerning the rocks the
year about. Pollock are within fall and early spring, and haddock from December to Feb ., inclusive.
Minn Kota Endura is actually by hand and trawl line.
Newfound Ground. A small rocky area about 1/4 mile over with an automatic buoy in the center for
guidance into the Bay of Fundy. It is a small-boat ground having depths averaging 18 fathoms. It lies
about 3 miles S. by W. from Moosabec Light. months and Species are as on Lukes Rock. Fishing is as
simple as hand and trawl line.
Henrys Rock and roll. Five miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light. 1/4 distance in diameter, and 30
fathoms across a level bottom. Fishing is done by hand range and trawl. Cod are present the year
about, a few haddock within the fall, hake during the summer time but not in the slip, and pollock in
fall and springtime.
Handspike Ground. Eight miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light, nearly round in form, and ? mile
across. It has a bottom of rocks and depths of from 35 to 40 fathoms. Mostly cod and pollock are
taken here by trawl and hand line, despite the fact that Species and seasons are the same as on
Lukes Rock.
European Egg Rock. This is SW. from Moosabec Light, 8 mls distant, lying inside a NE. and SW.
direction, 3 kilometers long by 1 mile wide. The bottom issharp and irregular, and rocky and has 25
to 30 fathoms. Angling here is mostly yourself line, the ground becoming said to be too hard for
trawling. This really is a small-motorboat ground, and fishing is done mainly in the summertime
season. Cod and pollock are taken in thespring and summer, and fall; haddock are present in spring
and fall; and cusk in 35 to 40 fathoms in fall and springtime. This is not a hake ground.
Old Egg cell Rock. This rock is WSW. from Moosabec Light, 6 miles distant, and running in a NE.
and SW. path. It is 3 mls long by 1 mile wide; has a rocky bottom and depths of 25 to 30 fathoms.
Trawls also are hired, even though this is also a tiny-boat floor, where fishing is completed mainly by
hand lines. This ground is fished by the greater vessels in the slip months when the weather is too
rough for minn kota endura on the outside grounds. , and a few pollock are taken in fall and spring;
hake in fair number in the fall months.Cod and haddock
Middle Ridge This is W. by S. from Moosabec Light 3 miles. It lies in a NE. and SW. direction and is
also about 1 distance long by ? mile wide. The depths are from 18 to 25 fathoms along with the
bottom is tough and rocky. It is actually a small-vessel ground mostly and also little importance as
being a minn kota endura ground. Cod are present the year around haddock in late summer and
spring season with a smaller variety in the fall. Cusk are here the season around. A few pollock are
here in the fall and spring.
Broken Ground. This lies S by E from Moosabec light, 15 kilometers, whence the ground stretches
WSW to in 4 miles of Mount Desert Rock with an average width of 1 distance. The depths work from
15 to 100 fathoms. The shallows are difficult and sharp; the deeps, gravel and clay. There are places
? mile long and others 3 miles long having depths of 70 fathoms. Several of these places have special
labels: Crawley's Rocks, Puzzling Rock, The Ridges. The grounds talked about here and those
previously mentioned are known to the anglers as the Moosabec Ridges. All these seem to be sport
fishing spots cropping out upon the 50 fathom curve. On the Broken Ground the minn kota endura
season is from June 1 by way of September. Herring usually are abundant in this article from May to
September. Cod are taken outside of the reasons in spring and fall. Pollock and small cod are taken
on the shoals in summer and fall, and hake on the mud bottom in summer and fall and hake on the
mud bottom in summer and fall.
Tibbetts' Ledge. This lies east from Petit Manan 4 or 5 miles. The marks are Schoodic Island over
Natural Island of Petit Manan and the Ladle over Nash's Island. This ledge consists of two rocky
shoals with depths of 3 to 3? fathoms, about one acre apiece in magnitude and 1/4 mile separate
lying NW and SE from the other. To the westward of these is broken ground nearly to Petit Manan.
These are favorite small-motorboat grounds. The eastern ledge drops suddenly into the mud. In May
large cod are caught over the muddy bottom just E of the ledge in 27 to 30 fathoms. Hake and
haddock are taken in late early spring (May) and slip. Minn Kota Endura is by hand line and trawl.
Ben's Ground. Lies ESE from Petit Manan 4 or 5 a long way. The marks are Petit Manan Light to
northward of Middle Hill of Mount Desert and Humpback Mountain in the west side of Trafton's
Island or Pond Island Light to the eastward of Jordan's Delight. The ground is circular fit and
healthy, about 3/4 mile across, having 14 to 30 fathoms of water. The bottom is of rocks and mud.
This ground is of little significance except as a tiny-boat soil in summer for cod and haddock. Hake
are taken on the muddy underside near it, It is a winter haddock floor in calm conditions, these fish
leaving it in the hard storms, the water being somewhat too shallow for them to "ride out a blow" in
comfort, These kinds of at least is the explanation the fishermen give for the sudden cessation of
their taking on shoal grounds after a time period of heavy weather.
Southeast Rock. This is a ledge, nearly uncovered at low tide on its shoalest area, SSE from Petit 4
and Manan? miles distant, The shoal portions slope toward the NE a distance of 4 miles more than
an irregular bottom part, Depths vary from 17 to 30 fathoms, The shoals are rocky, and the deeps
are muddy, haddock and Cod are considered here in May and June, hake from July to September, It
is a good lobster terrain, also, Fishing is by handline and trawl operated from vessels and small
boats from in close proximity to-by Maine ports.
Broken Ridges aka Joe Roy Ground. This lies SSE from Petit Manan 7 mls to the center. It is actually
2 miles lengthy NE and SW and one mile large and from 27 to 33 fathoms, and the bottom of dirt
and rocks is quite uneven, The shoalest portion is nearby the center. It is said to become good cod
and haddock ground, and it is mainly a small motorboat ground, although some vessel minn kota
endura is carried on here in the spring.
Black Ledges Ground. This ground lies between Jordan's Delight and the Halibut Ledges, or Dark
Ledges. It is a good haddock ground for a brief season in the spring and early summer season when
the fish are following the herring educational institutions. In general it is a little-boat ground on
which chiefly palm lines and trawls are operated, A few cod and cusk are taken within the fall, which
is a good lobster soil.
Bakers Island Ridge. This is a narrow ledge making out from Bakers Island E, by N. The eastern part
bears S. by E. from Schoodic Island 3/4 distance distant The ridge is much broken, its average width
being ? mile, and it has depths of from 20 to 25 fathoms over a rocky and gravelly bottom. It is far
from much fished around the shoaler spots, but also in 30 to 35 fathoms, on a dirty bottom, hake are
abundant from July to October, comprehensive. Cod and cusk are found here in the springtime and
fall; haddock from October to January, inclusive. Minn Kota Endura here is done by tiny boats and
modest vessels mainly from Bass Southwest and Harbor Harbor by trawl and palm line. It is a very
good lobster ground.
Martins Ground; Hillards Reef. The center bears WSW. from Schoodic Point, distant 3 miles. It is a
rocky patch of four to five acres and has depths of from 15 to 25 fathoms. It is not important except
for its hand-lining for haddock and cod within the spring and tumble months and for hake in the fall.
It really is a good lobster floor.
Egg Rock Cracked Ground. This is a rocky ridge making out S. by W. from Egg Rock Ledges and is
about 2 miles long by 14 miles vast. It has an irregular bottom, with depths from 9 to 15 fathoms.
This ridge, with Martins and Seaveys Reasons, divides the western or Bakers Isle mud channel from
Schoodic mud funnel. Both these were previously considered very good hake grounds but, while still
good, will not be as profitable for hake fishing like past years. Haddock are taken on the ridge in the
spring and then inOctober and Nov, and December. A few cod are consumed in the spring and fall.
Minn Kota Endura is as simple as hand and trawl line. It is a great lobster ground.
Inner Schoodic Ridge. This ridge bears SE. by S. from Bakers Island, the center distant 12 miles.
This terrain is nearly circular in form, about 4 miles in diameter, and has depths working from 18 to
60 fathoms. The bottom is ofrocks and gravel, and mud; the shoaler portions are difficult and sharp.
Vessels from Maine ports use this ground, sportfishing by hand line and trawl. haddock and Cod are
abundant here in spring and fall, and hake minn kota endura is good from the summer. It is a
excellent lobster ground.
Outer Schoodic Ridge. The northwest part of this ground bears SE. from Bakers Island, through
which it is distant 22 miles. It is situated 7 miles exterior Inner Schoodic, has long been considered
one of the best shore minn kota endura grounds of your Maine coast, and yet seems to deserve the
reputation. The ridge is about 8 a long way long in a NE. and SW. direction, lying nearly parallel
with the adjacent shoreline. Its greatest breadth is 6 kilometers. The bottom is cracked and irregular
and has depths from 22 to 80 fathoms over gravel and rocks on the shoaler mud and elements on the
deeps. Principally Maine vessels fish this ground, employing hand line and trawl. haddock, pollock,
cusk and Cod and hake are present here from June to November, and a few large halibut, up to 300
weight in weight, are taken here in June and July.
Install Desert Outer Ridge. This ridge lies SE. by E. from the Big Hillside of Mount Desert Island.
From Schoodic Island to the middle of this ground is around 25 miles. Its length E. by N. and W. by
S, is 2 miles; its breadth 3/4 mile. On the sides sand and clay-based predominate, though depths are
from 45 to 60 fathoms; the shoals are rocky. This is a comparatively little ground, but it furnishes
good cod minn kota endura in the spring (April to July) and fall. Cusk are consumed in the fall and
spring. Virtually no haddock are taken here. Hake are found in the deep water on the W. and SW.
inspring and summer, and fall; trawl lines principally are used on this page. It is a good lobster
ground but is too distant for present fishing methods.
Toned Ground. This ground lies between Install Swan and Desert Island, SW. from Long Island. In
50 fathoms, on the hard mud base, there is good sport fishing for hake during the summer. Minn
Kota Endura is by hands trawl and series.
Enoch's Shoal. This shoal lies ENE. 3 miles from Great Duck Island. This is a small hummock on the
outer parts of a ridge extending out to it from Great Duck tropical isle. It has a sharp, rocky bottom
with depths of about 18 fathoms. Hand lining and trawling are the strategies employed to take
several cod in early spring season; haddock are in small numbers during the summer time as well as
a small amount of hake. It is a very good lobster ground.
Financial institutions Ground. The center bears SE. by S. from Great Duck Island, far-away about 5
miles. It is about 1? miles long in the NE. and SW. direction by 1/4 distance wide and has a mud
bottom with depths from 35 to 50 fathoms. It is mainly a tiny-boat terrain, fished mostly during the
summer time, when hake are fairly abundant and there are a few haddock and cod. It is a lobster
ground, also.
Shell Ground. This is SE. from Lengthy island Head, from where the center of the ground is distant 6
miles. It is 2 mls long, in a NE. and SW. route and about ? mile vast. In the middle portion is actually
a shoal of 25 fathoms, its bottom sharp rocks. On all sides of this shoal the bottom is quite irregular,
consisting of pebbles and mud. The greatest degree, near the edge of the financial institution, is 50
fathoms. haddock and Cod, together with a few cusk and pollock, are taken here in June, July, and
August and even into the late fall, but it is mainly a hake minn kota endura ground for little boats
and an infrequent larger craft, all using hand collection and trawl. It really is a good lobster floor.
Abner Ground. This ground is SSE. from Gott's Isle, distant 8 a long way. It extends 1? miles in a NE.
and SW. course and is about 1/4 mile wide. The bottom is cracked, mud and stones, with depths of
from 25 to 50 fathoms. This really is principally a haddock ground, the best time of year being in July
and August, and is resorted to mostly by small craft.
Grumpy. Extends from SE. 4? miles from Eastern Ear of Isle au Haute to SE. 1/4 E. from the western
brain of Isle au Haute, distant 7 miles. This terrain is 2? kilometers long by 3/4 distance wide and
has a little shoal of 14 fathoms on the northeast part. Over all of those other ground the average
depths run from 35 to 40 fathoms over a gravelly bottom. Though not of great importance of late
years, this was earlier considered one of the best inshore grounds for cod for the entire year and
also for haddock in winter. Hake usually are ample just off the southeast edge in summer. This bank
is usually fished by craft from ports of eastern Maine--small vessels as a rule--and the principal
method is by trawling, while there is considerable hand-lining for cod in 25 fathoms in June and July.
Markings: Big Camden Hill over the Eastern Ear of Isle au Haute; Fog Island in Jericho Bay,
touching on the eastern part of Big Spoon Island; Brimstone among Isle au Haute and the Western
Ear canal.
Hatchell Ground. This ground lies SE. by E 3/4 E. 9? miles through the western head of Isle au
Haute. Marks are eastern Mount Desert Slope in the Middle Saddle of Long island, and Little Spoon
Tropical isle in the great or center Saddle of Isle au Haute.

to 40 fathoms in 1 mile from the shoaler part, which can be about ? mile broad, part of the ground,
deepening southwest to 40 fathoms in 1 mile from the shoaler part, which is about ? mile wide. This
is a great ground for cod in the fall and spring but is best for haddock during the whole winter. Hand
trawl and lines are being used.

discover a shoal here of 25 fathoms about 1/8 mile in diameter. From this the water slowly deepens
to NE. for ? mile, in which it drops away from into the mud. Depths on this northeast section are
about http://www.beach-net.com/fishing/ 35 fathoms. The bottom is of pebbles and gravel. In tumble
and spring this is a great cod ground. Hake are found close to the advantage in summer. Angling is
by small create, generally, using trawl and handline. It is a good lobster floor. Marks: Bring Blue Hill
Mountain within the saddle of White Horse; Brimstone displaying between Western Ear and Isle au
Haute.
Outer Horse Reef. This is a short distance SW. through the Inner Reef, with only a narrow gully
between. The small shoal falls off swiftly on all sides. It features a depths of 30 fathoms. Over a place
1/4 mile in diameter the bottom is gravelly. Seasons and varieties are as on Inner Horse Reef.
Hake Ground. The first title because of the abundance of hake taken right here during June, July,
and August, north of Monhegan tropical isle lies a repair called the Hake Floor or Mud. Inspect the
particular lagging associated with engine and heater exhausts for damage and also deterioration
along with regional products with regard to heat damage or even charring.Funnel. It extends from
just outside White colored Head to abreast of Monhegan Island on the upper side. The depths vary
from 20 to 45 fathoms, as well as the ground is still deemed one of the best hake grounds
alongshore. It is fished by small watercraft and vessels once the dogfish are on the outer grounds.
This is a good haddock ground in December and Jan, as well as a good lobster ground.
Southwest Ground. This lies 2 miles SW. Engine Maintenance
• Do not permit oil as well as debris build-up
in the actual bilges.
• Inspect the actual lagging of motor
and heater exhausts pertaining to
damage as well as deterioration along with
nearby products with regard to heat damage

au Haute directly in series between the two, about 3? miles far-away from each stage. It is circular
in form, has 28 to 30 fathoms of water, and the base is mixed mud and rocks. This really is a ground
much resorted to by sloops and larger vessels, and the minn kota endura is actually by hand line and
trawls. It is a excellent cod ground in fall and spring and a hake ground on the mud and rocks in
summer season. Occasionally a few halibut are taken on this page during June and July. It is also a
lobster ground.

gravelly and comparatively easy.
Rock Cod Ledge. This ledge is situated NE. of Seal Island 1 mile. It has a depth of three? fathoms on
the shoalest part, deepening progressively on all sides to get a considerable distance. The bottom is
of well-defined rocks and is shattered in places. Rock and roll cod area contained in fair numbers in
spring and slip, and this is a herring and mackerel floor in their seasons. Haddock are abundant in
the fall close into the rocks of Close off Island in 6 to 15 fathoms. There are many cusk to be had
right here on the deeper pieces and an occasional modest halibut is taken in the kelp around the
shoal in June and July, even if this is not a hake ground. It is a very good lobster ground.
Gravel Southeast and Bottom Ground. These lie S. of Close off Island. forming a comprehensive
piece of fairly level ground extensive bit of fairly level soil. The western that bears a little E. of S.

irregular, broken piece of difficult ground about midway between Vinalhaven and Seal Island. Otter
Island Reef is definitely the eastern section, being untruthful 4 miles W. by S. by 1/4 S. from the
western head of Isle au Haute. Depths here are from 10 to 25 fathoms over a rocky bottom part. The
trawl, formerly not much used in this article, is now in general use. It is best for cod in the
wintertime and spring and then for haddock in the drop, from November 1 to January 1, though this
is a haddock and cod terrain at seasons when these fish will be in shoal water.
Old Ripper. This is placed S. from the Traditional western Ground (Western Reef) and 10 mls WSW.
from Criehaven or Ragged Island. Apparently this is a part of the Western Ground. Around the deep-
drinking water mud bottom among these (Ripper and Western Reef) is nice hake fishing in summer,
and cusk are abundant from May to the time when the dogfish attack the ground, usually about July
5 to 10.
Crie Ridges. These lie 4 miles NW. from Matinicus Rock and roll, 4 miles WSW. from Criehaven or

Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04

  • 1. Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04 The fish of these shoreline grounds, due perhaps to the greater large quantity of food right here, are thought to be distinctly superior in good quality to those of the same kinds taken on the offshore banks. The cod and the haddock, specially, of the Gulf of Maine are notably well conditioned species of fish and are noted for their excellence. The numbers presented in Dinner table 2 show only a fraction of the get from the Inner Grounds, since they deal fully with the fares of fishing vessels of 5 net tons and over. There are thousands of the so-called "licensed" or "under-tonned" boats, generally gill-netters, that take numerous pounds from these oceans annually, principally cod and haddock. On the Maine coast and across the line in New Brunswick there are many than 300 weirs which furnished to American canners and smokers during the year 1923 (whose figures happen to be chosen as representing an average season) 77,000,000 pounds of herring. About the coast of Massachusetts there are 50 or more fish and weirs traps, and from the Isle of Shoals to Pemaquid Part of Maine there are more than 50 floating traps in the various bays, on the points of offshore islands, or even in the open sea, and all these have a rich harvest readily available waters. , there is the lobster fishery, more important in the Gulf of Maine than anywhere else in america.too and Then Of these various branches of the fisheries industries handful of statistics are available, yet we may say that the figures of the 1919 census showed that the "under-ton" vessels mentioned landed 5,324,426 kilos of fish with the port of Boston, mostly of haddock and cod, and this the same type of create in 1923 landed at Portland, Me., more than 3,000,000 pounds, primarily of ground species of fish. We also know that every village, island, hamlet and town and city coupled this nearly 4,000 'miles of coast line will take its toll from the sea. Lukes Rock and roll.
