What makes a movie a thriller, is mystery and
suspense. Thrillers make the audience predict
what is going to happen next and also keeps
them focused. A thriller Builds tension and
creates relief.

2. Setting and Characters
Settings are shown in a thriller film famous iconic landmarks like
in America (Empire State) or London (Big Ben, London Eye)
Characters are introduced to at first with no
problems but as the narrative develops more
begins to unravel
Characters like the protagonist which is the main
character in the film.
And the antagonist character is the one who brings
up the danger to the protagonist character he’s the
‘villain’.


The way they show the narrative in a thriller film is by showing
different scenes like match on actions.

3. Editing

The editing is like they try to create suspense or build up tensions by
having sound effects or music. Therefore this is important in the film
and in trailers.

In the beginning of film it’s calm and normal introducing the characters
and enigma codes, creating a first impression for the rest of the film

However in trailers they show quick sharp clips because they don't want
to bore the audience.
Music/Sound
Thriller films use sound like string instruments which
are high pitch which creates tension to the
audience. this also known as (non– dietetic sound)

4. Conventions
Most thrillers start off with a normal beginning but as the story develops that
isn’t the case.
In most thrillers the narrative involves a antagonist which creates the thrill to
the audience
I think they're more enigma codes in thrillers than most other genres enigma
codes such as ‘who did it?’ or ‘who’s there’ The thriller builds up tension
using sounds and smash cuts which suddenly shock the audience
Music builds tension (non– dietetic sound) most of the time or sound of the
weather or bombs ticking to build the suspense up slowly which is dietetic
sound.
Genre Signifiers

In this genre there are a lot of enigma codes and mystery.
For example heavy breathing, certain music and themes
are associated with a the genre of thriller like jump scares,
string instruments used in the music
