2. Introduction.
• My presentation will be about the different types of
graphical styles. The Graphical styles I will be talking
about are;
• Photorealistic
• Cell shaded
• Exaggerated
• Abstract
3. Colour Theory
• Colour theory is the Visual arts guidance for mixing
colours and the guide for visual effects.
• The colour theory also defines warm and cold
colours: for example Red, Orange, Yellow are
considered warm colours and Blue, White, Purple
are considered cold.
• Primary Colours; Red, Yellow, Blue.
• Secondary colours; Green, Orange, Purple.
Cold Side Warm Side
4. Cool colours
• Cool colours would be represented with blue,
purple, cyan and green. They give of a sense of
comfort and relaxation.
• These colours also seem calm and relaxed
5. Warm colours
• Warm colours are colours such as yellow, orange
and red.
• Warm colours connote a sense of danger and
violence. Such as blood is the colour of red or
orange/yellow is the colour of the sun.
• These are also wild and energetic colours also
related to exotic places and things
6. Monochromatic
• Monochromatic colours are the same colours with
different tints, tones, and shades from a single hue.
• They are all derived from the same single base hue
and altered by changing the shades, tones and
tints.
• This is done by adding black, gray and white
7. Complementary colours
• Complementary colours when mixed right will form
either a black or white colour.
• When they are placed next to each other they
support each other.
8. Analogous Colours
• Groups of colours that are neighbouring.
• One colour is dominant and on either side is the
tertiary colour complimenting
9. How does Colour theory relate to
graphical styles in games?
• Colour theory relates to graphical styles in games
by differentiating colours based on the environment
and atmosphere. For example if it was in a cold
country the developers would most probably use
cold colours opposing to warm colours for a
different environment such as a desert.
10. Photorealism
• What is Photorealism? Photorealism in games is
exactly what the name tells us. Developers try to
make certain games look as real as possible. For
example photorealism is used in many games such
as;
• Call of Duty
• Battlefield
• Far cry
• Photorealism gives players a sense of real life while
playing the games. Especially in war games.
11. Photorealism in Games.
• One of the newest releases Call of duty: Ghosts uses
photorealism. Call of Duty used photorealism to
show scars, scratches, blood and dirt between
fingernails. This is useful as it gives us the impression
of how the scene at a war would be.
• Photorealism is also improving with the new graphic
capabilities on the Next Gen Consoles.
12. Photorealism in Games.
• Farcry is another example of photorealism which
shows players having scars, Hair on arms, Veins.
• A disadvantage of photorealism is that it takes up
more disk space. Some games comes with 2 discs
so that players can install the graphics and the
game content itself separately. Such as GTA V on
the XBOX360.
13. What genre of games is
photorealism tend to be used in?
• The genres of games that photorealism is common
in:
• War games such as; Call of Duty, Battlefield, Medal
of Honour. Which show signs of scratches, blood
bruises and even to the most detail Hair.
• Sports games: FIFA, NBA, Rugby in these sports
games they do photorealism by recreating the real
facial features of actual footballers and other
athletes and also height, weight and other
characteristics.
14. Cel Shading
• What is Cel Shading? Cel Shading is a form of visual
art in video games, commonly represented in
games such as Mario, Zelda, Dragon Ball Z. It is a
render on 3D models to make them look hand
drawn.
• On the picture there are 2 astronauts, the one on
the left is a 3D rendered space suit that looks plastic
and the one on the right looks like it had been
drawn by hand using plugins which make the
pictures look hand drawn.
15. Cel Shading in Games.
• Cel shading today in video games is quite
common, The most popular game which uses Cel
shading is Zelda: Wind walker. This makes the game
look as everything has been hand drawn.
• This is useful as it gives the Impression of a more
cartoony style of game for children.
16. Cel Shading in games.
• Another example of Cel shading in games is dragon
ball z. They generally use bright colours to give a
simple look yet having a unique animation.
• Shading and shadows are used in full colour rather
than a gradual fade.
17. What Genre of Games is Cel
Shading Tend to Be Used In
• The genres of games that photorealism is common
in:
• RPG Games Such as; Zelda Wind Walker, Dragon
Ball Z, And sonic.
• Examples of cel shading in these games
18. Exaggeration
• Exaggeration is another art style used in video
games.
• Exaggeration is the process of Exaggerating things
such as weapons and characters and other
implements in the games.
• Exaggeration art styles are very popular in
Japanese culture where Manga And Anime is well
known
• Basically means over the top.
19. Exaggeration in Games
• In final fantasy there is a lot of use of exaggeration
such as the sword he is holding which is probably
bigger and heavier than the character himself.
• Another use of exaggeration is the hair as no ones
hair can be this spiky and that kind of shape.
20. Exaggeration in games
• Another type of exaggeration in video games is the
way a character looks physically such as batman. In
Batman: Arkham City. As you can see he is meant
to representing a human but he looks very

game as it doesn’t generally intend on similarity to
other games.
