Personal and Social Media
Personal and Social Media People have integrated personal and social media into vital parts of their lives Skype, Internet, Cell Phone Results: Media has shaped how we think, work, interact with others, and participate in our communities
Traditional vs. Personal and Social Media The main difference between Traditional and Personal and Social Media has been: DIGITILIZATION EXAMPLE: VOIP has become easier for military families to comm. over seas
CHANGES OVER TIME WITH COMMUNICATION WRITTEN COMMUNICATION TELEPHONIC COMMUNICATION COMPUTER-MEDIATED COMMUNICATION ELECTRONIC CONFERENCING INTERCONNECTED COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES
WRITTEN COMMUNICATION POSITIVES RECORDS, TRANSFERS AND WORKS WITH INFORMATION USED VIA LETTERS, BOOKS, ARTICLES, ECT. LEAVES A PAPERTRAIL NEGATIVES TAKES TIME AND EFFORT GRAMMATICAL AND WORD USAGE ERRORS USUALLY IGNORED
TELEPHONIC COMMUNICATION ORIGINAL INTENT WAS FOR SOMEONE TO REACH OUT TO PEOPLE THEY WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO NORMALLY VIA SOUND. EVOLVED INTO CELLPHONES NEGATIVES NO WAY TO SEE NON-VERBALS
COMPUTER-MEDIATED COMMUNICATION Positives FIRST INVENTED BY IBM IN 1940 THOMAS WATSON THOUGHT THERE WOULD ONLY NEED TO BE 5 COMPUTERS THAT THE ENTIRE WORLD WOULD NEED IN THE 1970’S THOUSANDS OF HOUSEHOULDS HAD COMPUTERS 75% OF PEOPLE NOW USE THE INTERNET AND HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS HAVE PERSONAL COMPUTERS Negatives Some functions have no paper trail, i.e. email
Electronic Conferencing Teleconferencing: a term that describes the discussion among people who are geographically separated. Different types include: Audio conferencing Computer conferencing Video conferencing
Interconnected Communication Technologies Extension and convergence of technologies already present. These technologies interconnect various devices to each other and to the internet so users don’t have to independently configure each new system.
Controversies about Personal and Social Media How do computer technologies affect thinking? How do online communities affect social relations? Do newer technologies increase productivity?
How Do Computer Technologies Affect Thinking Encourage multitasking Encourage response to visual stimuli Discourage independent, critical thinking
Multitasking Engaging in multiple tasks simultaneously or in rapid sequence in overlapping and interactive ways Computers facilitated multitasking, but is no longer limited to computer usage
Can We Multitask? Ironically, computers do not multitask A computer executes each operation individually in sequence at a very rapid pace Because a computer gives its full attention to a single task at a time, it does the task with great accuracy
Downsides of Multitasking Adults who shift between two tasks take longer to do both tasks and make more mistakes Since you pay attention to several things at once, you don’t go into any one thing in depth
Downsides of Multitasking Multitasking can make us feel rushed, hurried, always needing to check our email, texts, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
FYI: Drvngwhltxtng (326) Talking on a cell phone was no different than talking to a passenger Then safe to drive with hands-free set Now everything is dangerous Phone conversations are the most distracting activity
Encourages Response to Visual Stimuli We rely on screens to read text messages and to communicate online Thus, computers teach us to expect new stimuli continuously We learn to response to dazzling and vibrant graphics
PowerPoint Utilized by this and several other groups to present information Gives the impression that bullets are equivalent to clear thinking Before we have time to analyze the relationship between bullet and main points
PowerPoint The slide changes, and we now concentrate on the new set of bullets
PowerPoint PowerPoint’s emphasis on quick, visually striking presentation of information doesn’t encourage analytical or integrative thinking about the actual content
Discourage Independent Critical Thinking Make it easy to rely on external authorities Undermine imaginative thought Discourage independent thought
External Authorities Spell check on your PC Many people now do not know proper grammar, syntax, and punctuation
Spell Check I have a spelling checkerIt came with my PCIt highlights for my reviewMistakes I cannot sea.I ran this poem thru itI'm sure your pleased to noIts letter perfect in it's weighMy checker told me sew.
Auto Correct
FYI: Why Things Fight Back (328) Do you know all the phone numbers of people you regularly call, or are you stored in your cell? When is the last time you saw a cashier compute change without relying on the register? Is the schedule for the next two days in your memory or on your PDA calendar?
Imaginative Thought Relying on technology for engagement may undermine imaginative thought and sustained mental focus Cognitive specialists believe a child’s imagination develops when they learn to talk Children build imagination by using words to create make believe situations and invisible playmates and by collaborating with other children in play
Less Imagination Characters on TV and video games are already made and the actions are pre-structured Children are required to use a lot less imagination Research shows that imaginative play is linked to higher scores on tests of creativity and problem-solving
Less Independent Thinking Access to infinite information creates lack of any real authority Fail to make reasoned judgments about which opinions are really supported and good
Traditional Communities Traditional Community People with similar interests living in a particular area, close enough to interact on a daily basis A group of people with a common characteristic or interest living together within a larger society A body of persons or nations having a common history or common social, economic, and political interest Do you consider a virtual online community the same as a traditional community?
Virtual Communities Allow us to connect with anyone who is also a part of that specific community PROS Don’t need to compromise or make accommodations-stay out of topics you aren’t interested in Visit the community whenever and where ever you are Not responsible to adapt to tough/awkward situations Ability to be accepted for who you are
Virtual Communities CONS Don’t learn to adapt to situations—no log-off button in real life confrontations Lack of personal identity Becomes harder to develop an authentic self and share genuine feelings Healthy way to learn who you really are. Misleading characters
Increase in Productivity? Depends, sometimes yes, sometimes no IRS spent $50 million on new systems for the agents, 40% decline in productivity in return Word processors help us to be more productive with our work by catching mistakes—to a point Electronic entertainment doesn’t help everyone, including myself
Guidelines for Media Guideline #1-Consciously Managing Information Flow Between 1970 and 2000 Our access to information Is almost limitless, but does that necessarily mean we are more knowledgeable? “Information is the details…knowledge is being able to put the details together and draw a clear conclusion”—Philosopher David Rothenberg
Information Overload Irony of tech giant research on coping with information overload and stress Interruptions and switching between tasks shortens attention spans and decreases productivity-businesses $650 million annually W.O.W.—30 million hours each day-equivalent of $587 million production loss
FYI: Who Would You Become? (334) Amish determine their electronic needs through their set principles and values, not on the Jones’ What would life be like without modern technology?
Regulating Communication Technologies Guideline #2-Regulating Communication Technologies Who should control the internet? Microsoft issue Getting what you want on the Web, and what you don’t want Network providers functioning as gatekeepers Cookies, spyware, & hackers
FYI: Sexting (335) “Once the message is sent, it exists and may resurface at any time such as when a potential employer does an online search of an interviewee…” Felony charges
FYI: Cyberhate (336) Online communities specializing in hate speech encouraging negative feelings towards particular groups or cultures
In Conclusion…
