project 1b: PEEPSHOW
international pavilion design competition
Competition Background
Promoting visual art, design, and architecture through a creative street presence for visual art during Artcity, the annual
juried Peepshow International Pavilion Design Competition involves the design and construction (pending funding) of one
pavilion every year. These temporary Artcity pavilions, scattered throughout the downtown of the Canadian city of
Calgary, create a dialogue among designer, artist, and viewer, encouraging discourse into the fine arts and the urban
relationships that evolve around them.
Competition Brief – TRUTH & LIES
The festival theme of TRUTH & LIES will provide viewers and participants with a forum for critical discourse surrounding
ideas of replication, illusion and fiction. The opposing concepts of TRUTH and LIES invite a redefinition of how art, design,
and architecture reside within personal dialogue. ‘TRUTH’ and ‘LIES’ are concepts, conditions, which express a clear and
undeniable relationship with their context. It is an intriguing theme through which to explore art and design. Opinion,
individual perspective, and intention can be reexamined through values of fiction, interpretation, and clarity of concept.
The challenge of PEEPSHOW is to address the idea of TRUTH & LIES through the design of the sixth pavilion to be
constructed along Stephen Avenue Mall in Calgary. To revisit how art relates to urban space as a display of undeniable
truth, or an individual perspective intended to challenge accepted truths. How the pavilion negotiates a spatial relationship
with the viewer – either to create empathy or debate between the viewer and the artwork. These potentials and
fundamental design issues are brought to the forefront of the discussion in the PEEPSHOW theme of TRUTH & LIES.
Key Concepts
This year’s site is one parking stall (2.4m x 5.1m) in a street level parking lot [see photographs in this file]. You may
position your pavilion anywhere within the parking lot (the overall lot is approx. 37.2 x 16.8m). Consider its accessibility,
visibility, relationship to surroundings and orientation in your siting.
How this addresses the pedestrian experience both at street level and within buildings above is critical to the success of
the project. The winning entry will consider public safety and constructability in the design. Because the pavilion will be
reconstructed every year, proper siting and ease of construction will be considered essential in the selection process.
Pavilions must in no way interfere with the flow of pedestrian traffic, and should not require support from surrounding
urban structures. Entrants are encouraged to consider simple rather than technically complicated solutions.
Pavilions must be designed to present visual art in a way that is beneficial both for the viewer and the art. Entrants must
also consider that the pavilion’s purpose is to display art in an innovative manner, but not necessarily be the art piece
itself. Art may be viewed either from inside or outside the pavilion. Pavilions may be designed for a particular art form (i.e.

video, sculpture, performance, painting, etc.) or to exhibit a variety of art forms. The method of displaying art should be
clearly defined and illustrated.
The pavilion is for contemporary art - The following non-exclusive list of terms should give you a start – painting,
sculpture, performance art, installation art, multimedia art, conceptual art, abstract art, hyper-realist art, soft sculpture,
jewellery, film, superflat art, arte povera, fashion, ceramics, textiles, video, digital art, assemblage, expressionism, colour-
field, graffiti art, minimalism, neo-baroque, outsider art, land art, feminist art, art brut, deconstructivism, social realism.
Entrants should consult with at least one artist to advise how the work could best be exhibited in the pavilion.
Judging criteria
a) The pavilion is portable, reusable, and no larger than a parking space – (2.4m x 5.1m) and no more than 2.4m high.
b) It is evident how art will be exhibited in the pavilion.
d) The pavilion is suitable for future exhibitions, featuring a variety of artists.
d) Public safety must be considered.
e) The pavilion is durable and reasonably weather proof.
f) It is possible to secure the pavilion against theft and vandalism.
g) There is suitable lighting for the art so that it is visible day and night.
h) Ease of assembly and disassembly have been considered.
i) Cost of annual reassembly is considered.
j) At least one artist has been consulted regarding the appropriateness of the design for exhibiting art.
k) The design concept is well suited to the site.
l) The design concept addresses the theme of TRUTH & LIES with a provocative and interesting approach.
Requirements for Entry
This competition is a solo project for Architecture 1b.
3. SRD164 Architecture 1b 2008 – Project 1b: Peepshow Pavilion Design Competition – Deakin University – 29/07/08
Project Scheduling
Tuesday 29 July
For this session bring modelling materials and implements – paper, cardboard, knifes, cutting mats.
9.30am to 11am Lecture
PEEPSHOW/Architectural Competitions/Truth and Lies - Introduction
11am to 1.00pm Study brief. Research background, gather modelling materials (see below) and think of an initial
approach for discussion in Studio
1.00pm-1.30pm Studio - Meet tutors - divide into groups
1.30pm to 2.30pm Studio In groups – Discuss the development of drawings in Project 1a, plus initial
ideas, particular questions about Project 1b.
2.30pm to 4pm Studio
Explore the potential form and space of your proposed pavilion through the construction of a working model.
Consider the following – proportions, articulation, connections, shape, geometric properties, definition of space, light,
sound, organisation of space, circulation, hierarchy. You can use any medium (paper, cardboard, scrap, plastic, fabric)
that comes to hand. Make the model at 1:20.
4pm to 5pm Studio Present model (in groups).
To do before studio session on Tuesday 5 August
Consider (if you haven’t already) the form of art that you envisage being installed in the PEEPSHOW pavilion. It can be a broad type
of art, a movement within art, a particular art media or a particular artist. Compile your findings on a single A3 sheet. Show the
following: The form of art, a brief description of the art form and reasons for your choice (50 words), names of relevant/chosen artist/s,
images of their work. - Prepare to discuss in the tutorial.
Also, continue to refine your working model. Choose a palette of materials, consider a method of joining/articulating them, and think
about a structural system (bearing in mind that the pavilion is to demountable).
4. SRD164 Architecture 1b 2008 – Project 1b: Peepshow Pavilion Design Competition – Deakin University – 29/07/08
Tuesday 5 August
For this session bring butterpaper, fibre-tip pens or 2B pencils.
9.30am to 11am Lecture
Pavilions, past Peepshow entrants/winners
1pm to 2pm Studio
Divide into groups – Pin up art research –Discussion in groups.
2pm to 4pm Studio
Working directly from your working model, draw a plan and two sections of it. The plan and sections should be at
1:20, same as your model. Consider how art installation, assembly and disassembly will affect the plan and section. Draw
as finely and as accurately as you can. What happens between the structure and the skin, the inside and the outside, the
ground and floor, the space and the envelope?
All plans and sections should be drawn on butterpaper, in fibre-tip pen or 2B pencil.
4pm to 5pm Studio
Present model, plan and section (in groups).
To do before studio session on Tuesday 12 August.
Prepare a three-dimensional drawing [axonometric, isometric, perspective] indicating how you envisage the pavilion being
assembled/dissembled. Indicate your choice of materials (less than 50 words).
Present on an A3 sheet. Prepare to discuss in the tutorial.
