How Does Normal Hearing Work?
A normal hearing person hears
by means of three portions of
the ear along with the auditory
pathways of the brain working in
conjunction. We divide the ear
anatomically into 3 portions: the outer ear, the middle
ear, and the inner ear. The brain passageway of sound is
located along the central auditory pathways. When these
components work in conjunction, normal clear sound is
heard.
The outer ear includes the outer portion of the ear visible
to others and the outer ear canal. This portion of the ear
picks up and funnels sound into the “s”-shaped outer ear
canal to the ear drum.

2. The middle ear includes the ear drum and the air-filled
space behind it containing the small ear bones or
ossicles, commonly called the hammer, anvil, and stirrup
due to their shape. The footplate of the stirrup then
conducts sound vibration to the inner ear.
The inner ear is both a center of hearing and of balance.
The balance portion is made up of the semicircular canals
and organs of balance (saccule and utricle). The hearing
portion includes the cochlea and the hearing nerve. The
cochlea is often called the organ of hearing. It is a conch
shell shaped bone containing the organ of Corti which
houses the sensory cells of the ear. When these sensory
cells are activated by sound signals, chemical
transmitters are released and sent via the hearing nerve
to the brain.
The central auditory pathways of the brain then process
the sound for localization, noise reduction, and speech

3. understanding. It is these brain centers that actually
“hear” and “listen” to the sound. The ear is only
responsible for faithful transmitting the sound to these
centers. Damage at this level is much more difficult to
treat than at the ear level.
Damaged, disorder, or distortion of any part of these
components will result in some form of hearing loss that
will require a specific hearing treatment. Contact a
hearing healthcare professional today if you suspect you
or a family member no longer have normal hearing or are
at risk of hearing damage.
