Understanding the Seven Types of Additive
Manufacturing:
•Binder jetting
•Directed Energy Deposition.
•Powder Bed Fusion.
•Sheet Lamination.
•Material Extrusion.
•Material Jetting.
•Vat Photo Polymerization.
•With additive manufacturing, you can
print the assembly as a single piece,
saving money and time from start to
finish. With additive manufacturing you
can print multiple movable parts in a
single piece, potentially saving time on
assembly and material.
•Disadvantages – Production cost is
high – With the use of techniques other
than additive manufacturing, parts can
be made faster and hence the extra
time can lead to higher costs. Besides,
high-quality of additive
manufacturing machines may cost
high.
The SLM is a laser powder bed fusion
(LPBF) technique that uses a laser beam to
melt a powder bed selectively. For SLM AM of
metals, the material should be in the form of
fine powder. To start the fabrication, this fine
powder is deposited on a substrate using a
roller or scraper.
Selective laser melting uses
a laser to melt successive layers of metallic
powder. The laser will heat particles in
specified places on a bed of metallic powder
until completely melted. Then, the machine
will successively add another bed of powder
above the melted layer, until the object is
completely finished.
SLM In Additive Manufacturing
SLM (Selective Laser Melting) is in an additive
manufacturing method specially developed for 3D
Printing metal alloys. It creates parts additively by
fusing metal powder particles together in a full
melting process.
Materials Uses For SLM
Some of the materials being used in this
process can include Ni based super
alloys, copper, aluminium, stainless
steel, tool steel, cobalt chrome, titanium
and tungsten. SLM is especially useful
for producing tungsten parts because of
the high melting point and high ductile-
brittle transition temperature of this
metal.
