  2. 2. Definition Advertising is a way a company encourages people to buy goods, services, c ompanies and ideas, usually performed by an identified sponsor, and performed through a variety of media.  Advertisers influence our identity by making adverts. Many people agree that they influence our identity and they have a huge impact on our life. They influence our identity by using things such as techniques, stereotypes and targeting our audience.
  3. 3. Types of advertisingAdvertising happens in many different ways. Many products are advertised on television, although not all channels permit advertising. Billboards advertise products on city streets, these may simply be freestanding billboards or may be part of street furniture such as a bus shelter. Buses and taxis are often covered in adverts. 4. 4. Adverts in newspaper and inside plane. Airlines sometimes allow advertising inside their planes. Adverts also appear in newspapers, magazines and sports programs. Many stadiums have adverts set around them. Sports teams, tournaments, television programs and public events sometimes have sponsors. Advertising also takes place on the internet and TV.
  5. 5. TechniquesAdvertisers use many different techniques to get people to notice there adverts, often using deliberately shocking or provocative images. Once they have managed to make people notice their advert, they need to 'sell' the product or brand. Funny advert
  6. 6. They may try to make the product look appealing, however often advertisers use humour to get people to remember the brand without actually promoting the product. Poor adverts can damage sales or spoil a brands identity.
  7. 7. History Egyptians used papyrus to make sales messages and wall posters. Commercial messages and political campaign displays have been found in the ruins of Pompeii and ancient Arabia. Lost and found advertising on papyrus was common in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Wall or rock painting for commercial advertising is another manifestation of an ancient advertising form, which is present to this day in many parts of Asia, Africa, and South America. The tradition of wall painting can be traced back to Indian rock art paintings that date back to 4000 BC. History tells us that Out-of-home advertising and billboards are the oldest forms of advertising.
  8. 8. 19th century  Thomas J. Barratt from London has been called "the father of modern advertising". Working for the Pears Soap company, Barratt created an effective advertising campaign for the company products, which involved the use of targeted slogans, images and phrases. One of his slogans, "Good morning. Have you used Pears' soap?" was famous in its day and well into the 20th century. Under Barratt's guidance, Pears Soap became the world's first legally registered brand and is therefore the world's oldest continuously existing brand.
