The industry is on the cusp of a new era enabled by new delivery platforms, technological innovations, improved content variety and encouraging regulatory schemes. The industry in India is going through a phase of transformation with the digitization of cable networks. Television broadcasters are widening their reach in regional areas to become nationwide players. There is emphasis on increasing pay TV channels. Further, multiple channels in each genre and channels with niche content are showing their eagerness to tap into this emerging prospect. India is projected to become the largest DTH satellite pay-TV market, surpassing the USA with an estimated 44 million subscribers by 2012. The Indian media industry underwent a sea-change in the past few years, in terms of mode of delivery of the media. The introduction of digital television (TV) distribution platforms such as digital cable, Direct-to-Home (DTH) and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) are ample testimony to the fact. Innovative technologies like podcast and webinar have further enhanced the communication experience, while digitization of film prints and music libraries have enhanced the viewing experience. Online marketing and mobile music have not only gathered momentum but have also paved the way for niche content delivery. Further, broadcasters now have more bandwidth to provide value added services (VAS) to their consumers. The coming-of-age of the television sector has been the primary driving force behind the growth of the industry, while other segments like digital advertising, gaming, and animation & VFX are slowly but surely making their presence felt.
