This presentation provides an introduction to the area of cloud computing. This presentation is split into three sections, of which this is the third part. This third part introduces the concept of the cloud service broker and how in general terms the cloud helps to simplify B2B integration projects. If you download the presentation you will find that each slide has notes to help you get a better understanding of the content. Updated April 2013
Hello and welcome to this video presentation hosted by GXS, my name is Mark Morley, Industry Marketing Director.Over the next few minutes I would like to take you through a short presentation which introduces some of the concepts behind cloud computing. This presentation is the third of a three part video presentation and discusses how the cloud helps to simplify B2B integration. So let me begin this presentation by introducing the concept of the Cloud Service Brokerage.
The introduction of different layers of the cloud combined with the different types of cloud such as private and community, means that it is becoming important to think about how these different cloud based services will be integrated together. The analyst firm Gartner introduced a concept known as Cloud Service Brokerage to help articulate how the different cloud services, enterprise IT systems and cloud consumers or users need to be connected to a centralised broker to ensure that communications within the cloud are routed to the correct location. Now by routed to the correct location I mean that information is passed to the correct trading partner or business application. I suppose you could consider the CSB to be a form of black box with information going in one side, being processed and then being delivered to the correct user or business system.
In GXS terms, trading partners are connected to GXS Trading Grid, the world’s largest integration cloud platform. This truly global platform helps companies trade with both large and small trading partners anywhere in the world. GXS Trading Grid essentially looks after the B2B transactions or data that flows between companies and it doesn’t matter what format the data is in as GXS can mediate between any communication or document format. However in today’s global economy it is no longer acceptable to just focus on the B2B transactions between trading partners, the globally diverse nature of today’s trading partner community means that it is more important than ever before to manage person to person relationships as well.
GXS Active Community provides a new way of managing trading partner communities. It allows you to seamlessly manage the relationships with a group of trading partners. By retaining all of your trading partners’ contact details in a central location it means that you can simplify the way in which you manage the relationships and day to day communications with your trading partner community.GXS Active Community allows procurement teams to simplify the human aspect of B2B integration, minimizing supplier compliance risk and improving supplier time-to-market by 60 percent. GXS Active Community can help manufacturers by:Ensuring that a trading partner community adheres to your company’s Corporate Social Responsibility charterEnsures that correct sourcing decisions are made by using a comprehensive online mix of multimedia, documentation and marketing related informationIdentify alternative suppliers quickly in order to minimize supply chain disruption and therefore enhance customer satisfaction levelsImprove supplier collaboration which in turn helps to foster product innovation and provide a significant competitive advantage in the market
This slide helps to illustrate how the cloud service brokerage space is likely to grow over the next few years, seeing nearly a 400% growth by 2013. This exponential growth in the market has led to a number of acquisitions in the B2B integration space over the past 12 months with IBM acquiring Sterling Commerce, Dell acquiring Boomi and more recently SAP acquiring Crossgate.
So what does the cloud provide from a B2B perspective? From a business perspective it allows companies to deliver a standard set of tools for use by users across the extended enterprise and it allows them to utilise a series of pre-defined document standards. From a process orchestration point of view it allows you to improve information flow which in turn provides greater visibility into cross application transactionsData flowing through the cloud integration environment can be introspected to check for data quality and ensure that business documents comply with certain business standards before entering an ERP environmentFinally as all users would be entering the cloud through a single environment, it means that authentication and security procedures can be standardised across the entire business
So from a B2B integration point of view the cloud :Offers scalability and flexibility – B2B environments can be expanded or contracted depending on the needs of the businessAllows new B2B functionality to be deployed very quickly from a central locationGlobal nature of cloud based B2B environments allows remote plants or offices to be brought online with ease
The cloud also helps to Simplify ConnectivityThe cloud offers any-to-any mediation between different B2B communication or document standardsModern and legacy standards can be utilised within the cloudRegional standards can be embraced within the cloud, thus providing seamless connectivity anywhere in the world
The cloud also provides true end-to-end visibilityCloud based B2B environments provide end-to-end visibility of global business transactionsProvides a single view of B2B transactions flowing between global trading partnersCustomer shipments can be monitored seamlessly across multi-modal logistics networks and border control agencies
The cloud helps to improve Trading Partner CollaborationAll trading partners can be connected to the cloud with ease using a mix of quick to deploy, simple to use web toolsThe cloud removes the collaboration barriers between trading partners in developed and emerging marketsAll trading partners using the cloud environment can be administered through a central contact database
Finally the cloud helps to simplify integration to business systemsIntegration to numerous business systems takes place through a single cloud environmentThe quality of data entering ERP or other business systems can be proactively monitored via the cloudNumerous implementation templates and best practices from previous integration projects can be delivered through the cloud
