LinkedIn is the cactus plant of
Social Media, you need only
“water” or check on it a couple
times a year. Consider
accepting connections only
from those with a full profile, a
picture, working at school or
in the education profession.
Avoid vendors you don’t know
or you will get a lot of SPAM
messages.
Lurking at first is totally fine!
Listen, follow, RT, and learn.
Tweet when you’re ready. Try
to join in on a live education
Twitter chat. Join in on a
conversation, have fun!
Check your district Social
policy and follow it. Never
post a kids full name. Always
be positive & respectful
Post pics of the awesome
that goes on every day.
Can’t show kids faces?
Take pics over the shoulder
or smiling behind the cover
of a book. Kids still love
seeing their hands or ears!

What’s in a Name?
For all of your professional Social Media profile names, if you can get your real
@YourName that is best! But, 10 years after Twitter was started, it may be a
challenge! Once you get a name, try to keep it consistent. For more about this
and a few extra tips that won’t fit on this worksheet: Google: 6 Tips to a Super Twitter Profile
Location, Location, Location.
You don't have to put your street address but do include your country, state, province, school district,
or at least your city. It's great to build a diverse PLN, to reach beyond borders and seek out ideas that
reflect a global perspective.
Picture This!
Choose your best picture of YOU - not your kids, not your pet, and not a group shot where people will
wonder who's who.. Remember, this is a professional representation of yourself and you should put
your best foot..or face forward. Shy? Use a Bitmoji Avatar! Once you’ve chosen a picture though,
stick to it across ALL your profiles. That way, potential followers can easily recognize you when they
come across your profile in a different network. Consistency is a good thing!
Get a Header
Having a customized header is a great way to express your professional personality. It makes you
look polished, professional, & savvy! Having a blank or just color block header is really a wasted
opportunity. PS. Stumped? I have a bunch of FREE customized ones designed for you to use!
Link it, Baby!
It's good to add a validating link that other professionals can look to make sure you're really who you
say you are! If you don't have a professional blog, Twitter, or Instagram, you can add a link to your
school's staff webpage. Or create a LinkedIn profile and link to that. Why LinkedIn when you may not
be looking for a new job or school? Our parents and community are there & it shows that we're
professionals, too! LinkedIn is the cactus plant of social media. Just check it a couple times a year!
Write a Positive Profile
You don't have a lot of room to list EVERYthing in your profile description, you only have 120 -160
characters. This is your best, first, and most read professional bio out there on the web - so make it
good! Include your subject area, teaching level, maybe an award or certification. Add a quirky hobby
or interesting fact, and maybe something funny. Always be positive!
