2. Barbra Millicent Roberts Ruth Handler, Creator of The Barbie doll married the head of the Mattel Toy company, Elliot. She wanted a girl’s toy. In 1959, Ruth’s proposal of the Barbie (based off the German Bild Lilli Doll) was accepted by Mattel. Her first outfit was a striped bathing suit. She named it after her daughter, Barbra Millicent Roberts. Barbie became very popular and loved by many little girls.
4. Barbie, Ken and Friends Handler knew that there should be more people in the Barbie family tree. Many more dolls came such as Skipper, Tutti, Todd. The first addition, in 1961, was Ken. Ken was named after Handler’s son, Kenneth Carson. Barbie and Ken dated for 43 years until 2004, when they spilt. Barbie has been one of the most well known dolls in the world. She has changed over the years. Her jobs, her clothes and the new advertisements have all changed with her. As she went along, her jobs got more unique. Barbie will always be remembered as a very important doll who inspired other company’s to make more feminine dolls for girls.
