Mis En Scene
1. Mis-en-scene
Location: The location of the filming will take place in several places. The location of the teenage
character will take place in a poor part of northwest London. We will try to capture a slum like
setting to add to the connotations of the type of character being portrayed as well as the
stereotypes and representations. The character that plays the role of the businessman will be based
in a location closer to the city. Although his journey will lead to a rundown tunnel, we have chosen a
location that contains modern buildings in a stylish environment.
Studio/Set: Initially we wanted to use the drama room to shot a scene with an unknown person
writing on paper. However this changed and now we are going to use a computer programme called
after affects to create the shot of newspaper flashbacks.
Costume and hair and makeup: As Denis is responsible for this aspect of the production he put forth
the idea that one character dresses rather raggedly and the other dresses professional. This will
widen the gap between the two characters and reveal the class differences. It may not be possible to
create this image perfectly however we will stick to the idea above as much as we can. There will be
no makeup or fake blood used.
Body language: As the director I believe it is important to maintain the stereotypical posture of the
characters. For example the businessman will walk calm and confidently with his head up seeming
very objective. His outward appearance will create his personality. Moreover their facial features
must both be different. The teenager must look uneasy and stressed. While the businessman looks
neutral.
Properties: the businessman must carry a black suitcase like bag to add to the creation of our
character. The teenager may carry a small plastic bag which will seem as if he is carrying something
with him to give somebody.
Lights: In each location we have used there will be lights provided as part of the building or
structure. For example in the location shots of the tunnel there are several lights overhead. When it
comes to filming we will have enough light to get clear shots. We will also be filming during the day
so that we have enough natural light too. We have realised that to maximise are chances of getting
the best shots in the darker areas of some locations we have to film at the correct angles.
Colour design: We want to create an enigmatic opening scene therefore we will try to use a colour
scheme that gives a sense of cold and loneliness.
Sound: We are aiming to use two different music tracks. However both will be very similar to each
other. As part of the graphically designed shots we will have a soft melody playing in the background
as opposed to a chilling theme. In the filming part of the opening scene the music may change to
something more fitting to the emotions of the action being portrayed. However in saying this we
may stick to one theme track depending of how well it fits with the whole opening title.
