Media coursework evaluation

Question 1
in what way does your media product use develop or challenge the forms and
conventions of real media products

I think that the opening of our thriller challenged the typical convention of
thrillers in both the past and presents in many many ways such as our
narrative content for starters for which we decided we didn’t want to use any
dialogue in it which u don’t really see often especially with the content of our
opening the reason for which we decided we didn’t want to use and dialogue
and only soundtrack was to build up anticipation among the audience to leave
them wondering what’s going to happen the effect we wanted to create was
silence diagetically which we thought would be affective because it enables
the audience to make their own assumption to what was going on which we
thought was important and we thought the use of non-diagetic sound which
was our music we could allow that to do the talking to the audience so that is
one way in which e tried to challenge the conventional openings to a thriller
I think the format and style of our film does follow the convention of past and
present thrillers in some ways such as we have our main protagonist and the
illusion that we tried to create was of our main protagonist is out for revenge
on something that happened to them but that is as far as it goes as to
whether our opening followed the conventions of thrillers. There are also
many ways in which I think that our thriller challenged the conventions of
past and present thrillers in ways such as our main protagonist a who is out
getting revenge is a strong willed teenaged girl who is seeking revenge for
something that happened to her and I think that makes our film different
because we never really see that in films or media, its normally men.
I think our style and presentation is again similar to the conventions of past
and present thrillers in way such as we introduce our main protagonist and
we show the credits but that is as far as it goes

The use of conventions in our film help to indicate the sub genre of our
thriller which is a crime thriller we came to this conclusion because definition
of a crime thriller is very similar to the conventions of what our opening
displayed and from the synopsis we came up with the definition of a crime
thriller being a Crime thriller: This particular genre is a hybrid type of both
crime films and thrillers that offers a suspenseful account of a successful or
failed crime or crimes. These films often focus on the criminal(s) rather than a
policeman. Crime thrillers usually emphasize action over psychological
aspects. Central topics of these films include murders, robberies, chases,
shootouts, and double-crosses are central ingredients. And with our thriller
being about a girl who goes out and commits murder various at that in seek
of revenge we easily came to the assumption that the sub genre of our film is
a crime thriller

I think our camera work does follow the conventions of thrillers from both
differentiate ourselves were from the ideas we came up with such as using
the camera as an illusion to the audience that we were looking in the mirror
this was when the character was getting ready for revenge also the part
when the main protagonist is being held down on the floor in the attack when
we used the camera free hand to actually be able to get a close look of that
action and circled the attack by going round the action with the camera I
think that part was good because we able to portray a better grasp of the
situation to the audience

I think our editing was also different to the conventional thriller especially the
opening because we used quite a lot of affect for e.g. slow motion when the
character is being knocked to the ground by one her attackers which you very
rarely see we used that affect to emphasize the situation to the audience also
the part where we divided the screen at the end with the police sirens I think
that was especially different because you never see that it also helped
indicate to the audience what was to come in the film as the police sirens
connotation danger and the way effect of the screen dividing and as like that
off CCTV kind of cutting out so that also connotated that their something bad
was going to happen. I also think the way we did are credits different from
what you conventionally see as we did ours on a black page with red writing
which again connotates something bad is going to happen and also red is a
connotation of blood so that help the audiences understanding of what going
on also I think ours differentiates from conventional because you normally
see credits on the bottom of a screen whilst the action is happening whereas
as we split ours and put it on a blank black screen the affect of that being it
don’t take attention away from what is happening but also ot help the
audience have time to take in what’s happening

The mise-en scene was different and similar to the conventional thrillers of
past and present in many ways , I think our settings were kind of out of the
box thinking I wouldn’t really say it was much different form a conventional
thriller but we decided to do it different and make our character get ready in
a public toilet to create more of an affect you don’t really see that much but it
was really different either personally , the setting for the attack which took
place In the drama studio was again was not that different but the ways in
which we made it different was with the lighting for which it took place in the
dark with a red sort of spotlight this was different because you never actually
see that it was kind of unrealistic in a realistic sort of way
The clothing hair and make up were again not that different from what you
would expect to see in a thriller of our type and from the description and
title which was beauty of a killer, so the audience kind of expect ‘sexy’
clothing which e tried to give in a sophisticated sort of way think the first
costume is different as it is school uniform the way that this makes it different
is that it defines the characters age which is a girl of 15-16 who you wouldn’t
exactly expect to be going out committing murder as for the make up and
hair its kind of what is expected regarding her age the time it is set in and the
location which is England London
The three especially thrillers that influenced our opening are :hard candy
which is a psychological thriller about a girl who goes out in revenge for a
man she believes and later finds out is a pedophile the reason this film was a
string influence because the main character from this film and our film are
both of similar ages also the story line the description of the character in hard
candy being about a girl who is doing what she thinks is right and basically
standing up for her beliefs though it may not be in the right way which is
what we tried to portray in our character
Another film that had a great influence in our opening was monster a thriller
about a prostitute who goes out and commits various murders over a 9
month period the murders being of men who believe they are going to have
sex with her in exchange for money. the how this film is similar is because
the woman from the film monster was abused at a young age and basically is
seeking revenge In the form of murder on men who believe they can just pay
her for sex the similarities are they ere both abused at a young age by men
and are both seeking revenge in the form of murder

Question 2
How does your media project represent particular social groups?

In our opening thriller gender for teenage males of the modern day is
stereotypical to the extent that they are seen as quite a aggressive and
dominant which is displayed in our film from the attacking scenes you could
also go as far to say they are also stereotypical in the sense that they have no
respect for women
In the our opening thriller the female starts of kind of stereotypical in the face
that she is defenseless and weak against men but as the plot develops we
soon see her turn into a an aggressive dominant strong woman with a lot of
power which is very rarely seen in the media whether it be on TV or in the
movies

In our opening we represent age which of the teen years in both the males
and female character in the film from the way that they are dressed the
audience instantly know the age of the girl when they see that she is uniform
so they easily assume she is in her teens and for the male character the can
again assume the age of them being in their teens from what they are
wearing being the current stereotypical trend for a male teen in modern
London

To a certain extent the ethnicity of males in the opening of our thriller which
is of black ethnicity is represented stereotypically as in modern society black
males are assumed and stereotypes to be aggressive, no good, criminals

The audience are able to come to the conclusion that the characters of the
film are straight/heterosexual as they are attacking the girl in what was
supposed to be a rape scene
As for social class the audience would stereotypically assume the males and
female characters to be of working to middles class the audience the biggest
factor that influence this assumption is from the costume of both the male
and female characters

Again the regional identity of the film and characters would be assumed of
London again the biggest influence of this is from the clothes that the
characters are wearing which is stereotypical of a Londoner

Question 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why

I think our movie would be released through an associated major distribution
company for like nationwide release across the UK and possibly some of
Europe I wouldn’t think of it to be a huge Hollywood hit

The best possible funding that I found on research for our film would be
lottery funded by the UK film council I found this to be the best because they
have helped to fund many British film 1 of which was kidult hood which is a
UK film about youth of Britain this is a film that would be of similar release to
our going nationwide and of similar quality and standard

A distributer that I think would be appropriate for our film due to sheer fact
they have released film of similar kind of content for e.g. adulthood which a
UK film about the youth of modern London a film that was released
nationwide it think they would be the best distributers. From research the
BBFC classification that would be awarded would be a 15 as it has violence in
it but its not to gory and there is no nudity a film classified as a 15 means out
film is suitable for a person of 15 years and over, no one younger than 15
may see the film in cinema and no under the age of 15 may buy or rent the
film

Out films particular selling point is the avenger is a female in her teens which
you don’t see in the media I think it could provide our company and
distributor with some lucrative opportunities such as doing a sequel which
would make more money and merchandise such as replica props used in the
film such as the weapons etc which again will make a lot of money

Question 4

The 2 main professional thriller films that I would say is most similar to our
film is hard candy and monster because of their storyline which is about
women going out seeking revenge on men I would say these film would
appeal to females in particulars as their main character being women who
don’t play the role of stereotyped females which is that they are weak passive
house wives who don’t stand up for themselves but play strong aggressive
women out for revenge I would also say it would appeal to anyone who like
to see action/violence as there is a lot in both film and anyone who doesn’t
mind the site of blood as again there is a lot in both films

I would say out film would appeal to young males in England as the film is
based on males of their own age in modern London so I think this film would
interest them to see ho they are portrayed in the film and also how wider
society perceive young males in London
I would also say this film would grasp in particular the attention of young
females of mid teen to early mid 20’s as a lot of girls in society maybe able to
identify with that character in the film not so much the killing but the
harassment they may have endured from males or should I say the
stereotyped harassment from both the media, hear say and experience
I would also say not only would out film attract male and female audiences of
late teens to early/ mid 20’s but I would also say the class of these individuals
attracted to the film would most likely be that of lower to middle class as they
can identify worth the content of the film maybe not the story line but the
setting for e.g. modern London
I wouldn’t say it would attract anyone of a particular ethnicity but I would say
those of some kind of black origin again of mid teens to early mid 20’s would
be particularly attracted to the film as many of the characters of the film are
black and I thin they old be interested to see how they are portrayed in
society and they are also able to identify and maybe have a better
understanding of the characters

Question 5
How did you attract/address your particular audience?

I would say the main ay in which we tried to attract our target audience
regarding our protagonist which is the female is by basically using teenaged
school girl from london as our target audience ages is that of a a person in
their mid teens to early/mid 20’s they would be able identify with what going
on in the storyline and what they are seeing
I would also say the main way in which we tried to attract our target
audience regarding the attackers again by using a teenage males from
London as our target audience ages is that of a person in their mid teens to
early/mid 20’s they would are again able to identify with what going on in the
storyline and what they are seeing
I would sat the part in which the school girl is getting ready in the toilets
would again stand out to our audience in particular as the from the age of our
target audience many of us are able to identify with getting ready in the
toilets at some point in are life or no of our peers doing it maybe not for the
same purpose as the film but its just another way in which we can relate to
the film

I would say the sound track element that we used which was off rihanna’s
recent album is another way in which our target audience can relate to the
film as again this music has similar target audience to the film so they are
able to relate to the more to the film though the music may not be to
everyone’s taste

I would say the mise-en-scene in particular the costumes of the character
make it easier for our target audience to relate to the film as this is what
‘everyone’ is wearing with the costumes being the ‘trend’ at the moment. Also
another part of the mise-en-scene that help the target audience relate to the
movie is the setting which is on London so they recognise the surrounding but
also the fact that it takes place in a public toilet and the fact that she is
getting ready in the toilets is another factor that helps the audience relate to
the film

Also I would say that the editing also helps are target audience relate to the
film as the we used quite a few affect such as the slow motion when she was
punched o the ground the shaky and also slowed down from when the two
boys are walking behind her and again the shaky affect from when the boy is
holding her down and the effect used at the end when the screen goes funny
and the police sirens are on top of it , the reason why these effect are
effective and help the target audience relate to the film is it exaggerated that
action which makes it stand out to the audience also these are the affects
that we are seeing in the modern day media whether It be it in
American/British drama or music videos which we see a lot of affect used in
particular this helps us to relate as e see these effects “everyday” helping us
to relate mainly to the time period that of modern day

In the film I would say the audience are being asked to put themselves in the
position of the main protagonist the girl seeking revenge on men after being
attacked as the target audience are able to relate in some way to the
situation in particular the female audience can relate because at some point
most girls in modern society have been harassed by a boy whether It be for
their number etc maybe not the extent of the girl in the storyline but this
stuff happens so our audience are able to under stand the situation to an
extent. I would say the audience as a whole are being asked to sympathise
with the girl after they see the attack and abuse she endured from the boys I
think the impact of the audience witnessing the attack is they are able to side
with the girl and almost willing her on for being strong enough to go seek
revenge

Question 6
What have u learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the
product

Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
In our preliminary exercise we firstly decided on the story and what was
going to be happening which was about a criminal ‘gangster’ owing another
criminal ‘gangster’ money then we decided who’s was acting ,directing and
who was using the camera we then story board together firstly by drawing
out what was going to happen in each shot and once e finalised it we did a
photo storyboard in which we took photos of what was going to happen in
each shot after sorting that all out we started filming the quality if the results
from what we filmed was aright basically we filmed the whole thing but we
didn’t finish putting it together so I guess you could say the end results
weren’t great, but what we learnt from the preliminary when doing the thriller
was most importantly how to handle time better and be better organised also
we learnt ho to use the camera better because during the preliminary we did
struggle a bit we also got the hang of using the technology to edit so that
was a big improvement

For the final product which was the opening to a thriller due to the trouble
experienced during the making of our preliminary exercise we had to do far
more detailed plan firstly the story line we had to make sure it could be
realistically done but also that it made sense and attracted out targeted
audience, we also had to make a more detailed storyboard than the
preliminary but also make sure we varied our shots, we had to also decide on
costume and make sure it went with our story, we than had to make sure we
casted the right people which e had a bit of trouble with but I guess we got
their in the end we had to make sure we picked the right setting to make sure
we could pull of our storyline but we also had to pay attention to lighting
which we didn’t have to do in the preliminary but another important factor
we had to pay attention to was time which was quite hard but again I guess
we got their in the end we also had to pay more attention to detail during
the editing often having to experiment and see what works and what
doesn’t . the benefits gained by producing a more detailed research document
was we were able to identify what type of thriller we were making and
therefore making sure out thriller was appropriate also from doing the
research we were roughly able to identify what age our film would be
therefore making it more appropriate to that age but the most important
thing that research helped with is that is helped us to be able to identify what
our target audience would and wouldn’t like and therefore being able to
incorporate the information into our film. It also helped us know how we
wanted the end result to look so we were able use the camera better making
sure every shot was how we wanted so the research document was of a great
benefit

During the pre production process we decided we didn’t want their to be any
diagetic sound well from the character we didn’t want a script we basically
wanted the jus have a sound track and let the music do the talking for which
we chose rihanna madhouse which was affective because of the beat as it
went with the storyline and helped to establish to the audience what type of
film it was going to be we then used Russian roulette again by rihanna this
was effective because again the beat which includes a heart beat and I
thought that was a good choice because it connotates danger and something
bad happening but also the characters vulnerability and fear.
The final sound track that we used was rihanna g4l (gangster for life) which
we decided on because of the lyrics and for which its is basically talking about
seeking revenge we think the song represents revenge perfectly and give the
audience abetter understanding of what going on when the song lyrics start
as” I lick the gun when I’m done because I know that revenge is sweet” the
chorus being “gangster for life” connotates strength so that was a big factor
that influenced song choice as we were trying to a portray out character as
being strong and having the ability to carry out the revenge
At the end we use a sound effect of a police siren which we thought would be
affective as it a police siren conotates trouble and danger so the audience
immediately know what to come without actually knowing so we thought that
was really effective

To do with our protagonist performance which as me it wasn’t good at all.
The boys used for the attack scene did good as they did what was asked of
them. The director’s performance was good as she did what she needed to do
and got the job done
With regards to the production design which was my job I think it turned out
really good like we got the effect that we wanted for e.g. the lighting, the
location I think was a good choice for e.g. we used the toilet for the changing
scene and the drama studio for the attacking scene I think that was really
good as well because it created a realistic affect I think the costume for all
characters was what we wanted and again created the effect that e wanted in
order for it to appeal to our target audience

Yes I now do feel more confident with the equipment well better than I felt
when we was doing the preliminary exercise
I think our overall organisation and teamwork as quite poor mainly due to
lack of communication I think we could have been much better organised so I
think if we communicated more we could have got a lot more done faster
I think the end product turned out really well apart from my acting but apart
from that I give it a thumbs up I think It would compare quite alright with
professional product if I’m honest well apart form my acting

Media coursework evaluation

  • 1. Media coursework evaluation Question 1 in what way does your media product use develop or challenge the forms and conventions of real media products I think that the opening of our thriller challenged the typical convention of thrillers in both the past and presents in many many ways such as our narrative content for starters for which we decided we didn’t want to use any dialogue in it which u don’t really see often especially with the content of our opening the reason for which we decided we didn’t want to use and dialogue and only soundtrack was to build up anticipation among the audience to leave them wondering what’s going to happen the effect we wanted to create was silence diagetically which we thought would be affective because it enables the audience to make their own assumption to what was going on which we thought was important and we thought the use of non-diagetic sound which was our music we could allow that to do the talking to the audience so that is one way in which e tried to challenge the conventional openings to a thriller I think the format and style of our film does follow the convention of past and present thrillers in some ways such as we have our main protagonist and the illusion that we tried to create was of our main protagonist is out for revenge on something that happened to them but that is as far as it goes as to whether our opening followed the conventions of thrillers. There are also many ways in which I think that our thriller challenged the conventions of past and present thrillers in ways such as our main protagonist a who is out getting revenge is a strong willed teenaged girl who is seeking revenge for something that happened to her and I think that makes our film different because we never really see that in films or media, its normally men. I think our style and presentation is again similar to the conventions of past and present thrillers in way such as we introduce our main protagonist and we show the credits but that is as far as it goes The use of conventions in our film help to indicate the sub genre of our thriller which is a crime thriller we came to this conclusion because definition of a crime thriller is very similar to the conventions of what our opening displayed and from the synopsis we came up with the definition of a crime thriller being a Crime thriller: This particular genre is a hybrid type of both crime films and thrillers that offers a suspenseful account of a successful or failed crime or crimes. These films often focus on the criminal(s) rather than a policeman. Crime thrillers usually emphasize action over psychological aspects. Central topics of these films include murders, robberies, chases, shootouts, and double-crosses are central ingredients. And with our thriller being about a girl who goes out and commits murder various at that in seek of revenge we easily came to the assumption that the sub genre of our film is a crime thriller I think our camera work does follow the conventions of thrillers from both differentiate ourselves were from the ideas we came up with such as using
  • 2. the camera as an illusion to the audience that we were looking in the mirror this was when the character was getting ready for revenge also the part when the main protagonist is being held down on the floor in the attack when we used the camera free hand to actually be able to get a close look of that action and circled the attack by going round the action with the camera I think that part was good because we able to portray a better grasp of the situation to the audience I think our editing was also different to the conventional thriller especially the opening because we used quite a lot of affect for e.g. slow motion when the character is being knocked to the ground by one her attackers which you very rarely see we used that affect to emphasize the situation to the audience also the part where we divided the screen at the end with the police sirens I think that was especially different because you never see that it also helped indicate to the audience what was to come in the film as the police sirens connotation danger and the way effect of the screen dividing and as like that off CCTV kind of cutting out so that also connotated that their something bad was going to happen. I also think the way we did are credits different from what you conventionally see as we did ours on a black page with red writing which again connotates something bad is going to happen and also red is a connotation of blood so that help the audiences understanding of what going on also I think ours differentiates from conventional because you normally see credits on the bottom of a screen whilst the action is happening whereas as we split ours and put it on a blank black screen the affect of that being it don’t take attention away from what is happening but also ot help the audience have time to take in what’s happening The mise-en scene was different and similar to the conventional thrillers of past and present in many ways , I think our settings were kind of out of the box thinking I wouldn’t really say it was much different form a conventional thriller but we decided to do it different and make our character get ready in a public toilet to create more of an affect you don’t really see that much but it was really different either personally , the setting for the attack which took place In the drama studio was again was not that different but the ways in which we made it different was with the lighting for which it took place in the dark with a red sort of spotlight this was different because you never actually see that it was kind of unrealistic in a realistic sort of way The clothing hair and make up were again not that different from what you would expect to see in a thriller of our type and from the description and title which was beauty of a killer, so the audience kind of expect ‘sexy’ clothing which e tried to give in a sophisticated sort of way think the first costume is different as it is school uniform the way that this makes it different is that it defines the characters age which is a girl of 15-16 who you wouldn’t exactly expect to be going out committing murder as for the make up and hair its kind of what is expected regarding her age the time it is set in and the location which is England London
  • 3. The three especially thrillers that influenced our opening are :hard candy which is a psychological thriller about a girl who goes out in revenge for a man she believes and later finds out is a pedophile the reason this film was a string influence because the main character from this film and our film are both of similar ages also the story line the description of the character in hard candy being about a girl who is doing what she thinks is right and basically standing up for her beliefs though it may not be in the right way which is what we tried to portray in our character Another film that had a great influence in our opening was monster a thriller about a prostitute who goes out and commits various murders over a 9 month period the murders being of men who believe they are going to have sex with her in exchange for money. the how this film is similar is because the woman from the film monster was abused at a young age and basically is seeking revenge In the form of murder on men who believe they can just pay her for sex the similarities are they ere both abused at a young age by men and are both seeking revenge in the form of murder Question 2 How does your media project represent particular social groups? In our opening thriller gender for teenage males of the modern day is stereotypical to the extent that they are seen as quite a aggressive and dominant which is displayed in our film from the attacking scenes you could also go as far to say they are also stereotypical in the sense that they have no respect for women In the our opening thriller the female starts of kind of stereotypical in the face that she is defenseless and weak against men but as the plot develops we soon see her turn into a an aggressive dominant strong woman with a lot of power which is very rarely seen in the media whether it be on TV or in the movies In our opening we represent age which of the teen years in both the males and female character in the film from the way that they are dressed the audience instantly know the age of the girl when they see that she is uniform so they easily assume she is in her teens and for the male character the can again assume the age of them being in their teens from what they are wearing being the current stereotypical trend for a male teen in modern London To a certain extent the ethnicity of males in the opening of our thriller which is of black ethnicity is represented stereotypically as in modern society black males are assumed and stereotypes to be aggressive, no good, criminals The audience are able to come to the conclusion that the characters of the film are straight/heterosexual as they are attacking the girl in what was supposed to be a rape scene
  • 4. As for social class the audience would stereotypically assume the males and female characters to be of working to middles class the audience the biggest factor that influence this assumption is from the costume of both the male and female characters Again the regional identity of the film and characters would be assumed of London again the biggest influence of this is from the clothes that the characters are wearing which is stereotypical of a Londoner Question 3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why I think our movie would be released through an associated major distribution company for like nationwide release across the UK and possibly some of Europe I wouldn’t think of it to be a huge Hollywood hit The best possible funding that I found on research for our film would be lottery funded by the UK film council I found this to be the best because they have helped to fund many British film 1 of which was kidult hood which is a UK film about youth of Britain this is a film that would be of similar release to our going nationwide and of similar quality and standard A distributer that I think would be appropriate for our film due to sheer fact they have released film of similar kind of content for e.g. adulthood which a UK film about the youth of modern London a film that was released nationwide it think they would be the best distributers. From research the BBFC classification that would be awarded would be a 15 as it has violence in it but its not to gory and there is no nudity a film classified as a 15 means out film is suitable for a person of 15 years and over, no one younger than 15 may see the film in cinema and no under the age of 15 may buy or rent the film Out films particular selling point is the avenger is a female in her teens which you don’t see in the media I think it could provide our company and distributor with some lucrative opportunities such as doing a sequel which would make more money and merchandise such as replica props used in the film such as the weapons etc which again will make a lot of money Question 4 The 2 main professional thriller films that I would say is most similar to our film is hard candy and monster because of their storyline which is about women going out seeking revenge on men I would say these film would appeal to females in particulars as their main character being women who don’t play the role of stereotyped females which is that they are weak passive
  • 5. house wives who don’t stand up for themselves but play strong aggressive women out for revenge I would also say it would appeal to anyone who like to see action/violence as there is a lot in both film and anyone who doesn’t mind the site of blood as again there is a lot in both films I would say out film would appeal to young males in England as the film is based on males of their own age in modern London so I think this film would interest them to see ho they are portrayed in the film and also how wider society perceive young males in London I would also say this film would grasp in particular the attention of young females of mid teen to early mid 20’s as a lot of girls in society maybe able to identify with that character in the film not so much the killing but the harassment they may have endured from males or should I say the stereotyped harassment from both the media, hear say and experience I would also say not only would out film attract male and female audiences of late teens to early/ mid 20’s but I would also say the class of these individuals attracted to the film would most likely be that of lower to middle class as they can identify worth the content of the film maybe not the story line but the setting for e.g. modern London I wouldn’t say it would attract anyone of a particular ethnicity but I would say those of some kind of black origin again of mid teens to early mid 20’s would be particularly attracted to the film as many of the characters of the film are black and I thin they old be interested to see how they are portrayed in society and they are also able to identify and maybe have a better understanding of the characters Question 5 How did you attract/address your particular audience? I would say the main ay in which we tried to attract our target audience regarding our protagonist which is the female is by basically using teenaged school girl from london as our target audience ages is that of a a person in their mid teens to early/mid 20’s they would be able identify with what going on in the storyline and what they are seeing I would also say the main way in which we tried to attract our target audience regarding the attackers again by using a teenage males from London as our target audience ages is that of a person in their mid teens to early/mid 20’s they would are again able to identify with what going on in the storyline and what they are seeing I would sat the part in which the school girl is getting ready in the toilets would again stand out to our audience in particular as the from the age of our target audience many of us are able to identify with getting ready in the toilets at some point in are life or no of our peers doing it maybe not for the same purpose as the film but its just another way in which we can relate to the film I would say the sound track element that we used which was off rihanna’s recent album is another way in which our target audience can relate to the
  • 6. film as again this music has similar target audience to the film so they are able to relate to the more to the film though the music may not be to everyone’s taste I would say the mise-en-scene in particular the costumes of the character make it easier for our target audience to relate to the film as this is what ‘everyone’ is wearing with the costumes being the ‘trend’ at the moment. Also another part of the mise-en-scene that help the target audience relate to the movie is the setting which is on London so they recognise the surrounding but also the fact that it takes place in a public toilet and the fact that she is getting ready in the toilets is another factor that helps the audience relate to the film Also I would say that the editing also helps are target audience relate to the film as the we used quite a few affect such as the slow motion when she was punched o the ground the shaky and also slowed down from when the two boys are walking behind her and again the shaky affect from when the boy is holding her down and the effect used at the end when the screen goes funny and the police sirens are on top of it , the reason why these effect are effective and help the target audience relate to the film is it exaggerated that action which makes it stand out to the audience also these are the affects that we are seeing in the modern day media whether It be it in American/British drama or music videos which we see a lot of affect used in particular this helps us to relate as e see these effects “everyday” helping us to relate mainly to the time period that of modern day In the film I would say the audience are being asked to put themselves in the position of the main protagonist the girl seeking revenge on men after being attacked as the target audience are able to relate in some way to the situation in particular the female audience can relate because at some point most girls in modern society have been harassed by a boy whether It be for their number etc maybe not the extent of the girl in the storyline but this stuff happens so our audience are able to under stand the situation to an extent. I would say the audience as a whole are being asked to sympathise with the girl after they see the attack and abuse she endured from the boys I think the impact of the audience witnessing the attack is they are able to side with the girl and almost willing her on for being strong enough to go seek revenge Question 6 What have u learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product Question 7 Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
  • 7. In our preliminary exercise we firstly decided on the story and what was going to be happening which was about a criminal ‘gangster’ owing another criminal ‘gangster’ money then we decided who’s was acting ,directing and who was using the camera we then story board together firstly by drawing out what was going to happen in each shot and once e finalised it we did a photo storyboard in which we took photos of what was going to happen in each shot after sorting that all out we started filming the quality if the results from what we filmed was aright basically we filmed the whole thing but we didn’t finish putting it together so I guess you could say the end results weren’t great, but what we learnt from the preliminary when doing the thriller was most importantly how to handle time better and be better organised also we learnt ho to use the camera better because during the preliminary we did struggle a bit we also got the hang of using the technology to edit so that was a big improvement For the final product which was the opening to a thriller due to the trouble experienced during the making of our preliminary exercise we had to do far more detailed plan firstly the story line we had to make sure it could be realistically done but also that it made sense and attracted out targeted audience, we also had to make a more detailed storyboard than the preliminary but also make sure we varied our shots, we had to also decide on costume and make sure it went with our story, we than had to make sure we casted the right people which e had a bit of trouble with but I guess we got their in the end we had to make sure we picked the right setting to make sure we could pull of our storyline but we also had to pay attention to lighting which we didn’t have to do in the preliminary but another important factor we had to pay attention to was time which was quite hard but again I guess we got their in the end we also had to pay more attention to detail during the editing often having to experiment and see what works and what doesn’t . the benefits gained by producing a more detailed research document was we were able to identify what type of thriller we were making and therefore making sure out thriller was appropriate also from doing the research we were roughly able to identify what age our film would be therefore making it more appropriate to that age but the most important thing that research helped with is that is helped us to be able to identify what our target audience would and wouldn’t like and therefore being able to incorporate the information into our film. It also helped us know how we wanted the end result to look so we were able use the camera better making sure every shot was how we wanted so the research document was of a great benefit During the pre production process we decided we didn’t want their to be any diagetic sound well from the character we didn’t want a script we basically wanted the jus have a sound track and let the music do the talking for which we chose rihanna madhouse which was affective because of the beat as it went with the storyline and helped to establish to the audience what type of film it was going to be we then used Russian roulette again by rihanna this was effective because again the beat which includes a heart beat and I
  • 8. thought that was a good choice because it connotates danger and something bad happening but also the characters vulnerability and fear. The final sound track that we used was rihanna g4l (gangster for life) which we decided on because of the lyrics and for which its is basically talking about seeking revenge we think the song represents revenge perfectly and give the audience abetter understanding of what going on when the song lyrics start as” I lick the gun when I’m done because I know that revenge is sweet” the chorus being “gangster for life” connotates strength so that was a big factor that influenced song choice as we were trying to a portray out character as being strong and having the ability to carry out the revenge At the end we use a sound effect of a police siren which we thought would be affective as it a police siren conotates trouble and danger so the audience immediately know what to come without actually knowing so we thought that was really effective To do with our protagonist performance which as me it wasn’t good at all. The boys used for the attack scene did good as they did what was asked of them. The director’s performance was good as she did what she needed to do and got the job done With regards to the production design which was my job I think it turned out really good like we got the effect that we wanted for e.g. the lighting, the location I think was a good choice for e.g. we used the toilet for the changing scene and the drama studio for the attacking scene I think that was really good as well because it created a realistic affect I think the costume for all characters was what we wanted and again created the effect that e wanted in order for it to appeal to our target audience Yes I now do feel more confident with the equipment well better than I felt when we was doing the preliminary exercise I think our overall organisation and teamwork as quite poor mainly due to lack of communication I think we could have been much better organised so I think if we communicated more we could have got a lot more done faster I think the end product turned out really well apart from my acting but apart from that I give it a thumbs up I think It would compare quite alright with professional product if I’m honest well apart form my acting
