Brief description of topic/introduction speech
Many people only think one of two things when they hear “environmental science:” global warming, or…
a tree-hugging hippie!
Talk about plans to be environmental scientist/engineer, and why I want to pursue that field.
More reasons for choosing topic (types of laws)
Talk about technology invented for the betterment of the environment, such as Vegware. Give an explanation as to what Vegware is.
Discuss what I plan to get out of this research and hands-on project; other reasons why I chose this topic.
State thesis: the study of environmental science has been beneficial to the planet’s well being by promoting environmental awareness, which in turn leads to improved technology and the implementation of environmental laws and regulations.
Delve into the history of environmental problems (not science). Man-made environmental problems existed since ancient civilizations; explain how.
Begin to explain the history of modern environmental science (Rachel Carson, background on her)
Discuss Rachel Carson’s findings on DDT, its effects on wildlife, how it got banned, etc.
After numerous events like the burning river, Richard Nixon established the EPA as a gov’t agency in 1970.
Within the first few years of its existence, the EPA established multiple laws regarding pollution problems (CWA, CAA).
Discuss events such as the burning of the Cuyahoga River, cost of damage, other incidents regarding that river.
PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyls) are a harmful organic compound that has ties to cancer; released into waters regularly.
New York has been severely affected by PCBs
1947-1977: GE released about 1.3 million pounds of PCBs into Hudson River
Even today, 30-60 years after PCBs released into the Hudson, efforts are being made by the EPA to remove these PCBs
Upper Hudson: fishing is prohibited
Even in the lower Hudson fishing for specific fish such as striped bass is prohibited
The Great Lakes are also severely affected by PCBs
Shellfish and other forms of aquatic life in the Great Lakes have been contaminated with PCBs
Talk about some of the Environmental laws implemented since 1970, mention Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act
FWS creates laws as well, most “important” being the Endangered Species Act
Explain the Endangered Species Act (though name is self-explanatory). Endangered as a result of economic growth and development.
One of my main goals was to learn about more environmentally-friendly technology, and I thought that the Morris Arboretum would be ideal. Essentially, my project was a tour of the Morris Arboretum.
Concluding slide(s): Reiterate motives for studying this topic, such as going to major in a related field, and why the study of environmental science is important, etc.
