On September 11, 2001, four coordinated terrorist attacks were carried out by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda against the United States. Hijacked commercial airliners were intentionally crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and The Pentagon building near Washington D.C., and a fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Over 3,000 people were killed in the attacks and more than 5,000 children lost at least one parent, leaving deep psychological scars.
