George Fox founded Quakerism in the 17th century in England and it later spread to America. Quakers experienced periods of quietism from 1682-1776 as well as splits between the Hicksite and Orthodox branches in 1827-28 and between the Gurneyite and Wilburite Orthodox branches. The movement grew in America during a revival in the late 18th century but Conservative Friends later split off, and Quaker organizations were founded in the late 19th century to unite the branches.
