Subjective Socioeconomic Status Causes Aggression: A Test of the Theory of Social Deprivation Tobias Greitemeyer and Christina Sagioglou University of Innsbruck Seven studies (overall N � 3690) addressed the relation between people’s subjective socioeconomic status (SES) and their aggression levels. Based on relative deprivation theory, we proposed that people low in subjective SES would feel at a disadvantage, which in turn would elicit aggressive responses. In 3 correlational studies, subjective SES was negatively related to trait aggression. Importantly, this relation held when controlling for measures that are related to 1 or both subjective SES and trait aggression, such as the dark tetrad and the Big Five. Four experimental studies then demonstrated that participants in a low status condition were more aggressive than were participants in a high status condition. Compared with a medium-SES condition, participants of low subjective SES were more aggressive rather than participants of high subjective SES being less aggressive. Moreover, low SES increased aggressive behavior toward targets that were the source for participants’ experience of disadvantage but also toward neutral targets. Sequential mediation analyses suggest that the experience of disadvantage underlies the effect of subjective SES on aggressive affect, whereas aggressive affect was the proximal determinant of aggressive behavior. Taken together, the present research found compre- hensive support for key predictions derived from the theory of relative deprivation of how the perception of low SES is related to the person’s judgments, emotional reactions, and actions. Mental Illness Stigma and the Fundamental Components of Supported Employment Patrick W. Corrigan, Jonathon E. Larson, and Sachiko A. Kuwabara Illinois Institute of Psychology Purpose/Objective: The success of supported employment programs will partly depend on the endorsement of stigma in communities in which the programs operate. In this article, the authors examine 2 models of stigma—responsibility attribution and dangerousness—and their relationships to components of supported employment—help getting a job and help keeping a job. Research Method/Design: A stratified and randomly recruited sample (N � 815) completed responses to a vignette about “Chris,” a person alternately described with mental illness, with drug addiction, or in a wheelchair. Research participants completed items that represented responsibility and dangerousness models. They also completed items representing 2 fundamental aspects of supported employment: help getting a job or help keeping a job. Results: When participants viewed Chris as responsible for his condition (e.g., mental illness), they reacted to him in an angry manner, which in turn led to lesser endorsement of the 2 aspects of supported employment. In addition, people who viewed Chris as dangerous feared him and wanted to stay away from him, even in settings where people with mental illness might work. Conclusions/ Implications: Implications for understanding supported employment are discussed. Keywords: stigma, supported employment, discrimination The disabilities of serious mental illness can block people from obtaining important life goals, including a good job. Several kinds of vocational rehabilitation programs have emerged to address work-related disabilities. Some of these approaches are known as train-place strategies (Corrigan & McCracken, 2005). Through an education-based strategy, in train-place programs, participants must learn prevocational and work readiness skills before they are placed in work settings. These work settings are often sheltered; that is, the job is “owned” by a rehabilitation agency, which can protect participants from stressors (Corrigan, 2001). Alternatively, supported employment is place-train in orientation. People are placed in real-world work and subsequently provided training and support to address problems as they emerge, thereby helping a person to maintain a regular job. The latter group has dominated recent supported employment models for people with psychiatric disabilities (Bond et al., 2001; Bond, Becker, Drake, & Vogler, 1997). Some forms of supported employment recommend rapid placement of people in work settings of interest to them (Becker & Drake, 2003). Unlike train-place programs, supported employment does not try to protect people with disabilities from the work world (Cor- rigan, 2001; Corrigan & McCracken, 2005). This cross-sectional online study assessed 898 participants from April 13, 2020 to May 19, 2020, approximately one month after the U.S. declared a state of emergency due to COVID-19 and prior to the initial lifting of restrictions across 50 U.S. states. Respondents reported high levels of depression (43.3%, PHQ-8 scores ≥ 10), high anxiety scores (45.4%, GAD-7 scores ≥ 10), and high levels of PTSD symptoms (31.8%, PCL-C scores ≥ 45). High levels of loneliness, high levels of COVID-19-specific worry, and low distress tolerance were significantly associated with clinical levels of depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms. Resilience was associated with low levels of depression and anxiety symptoms but not PTSD. Most respondents had high levels of social support; social support from family, but not from partner or peers, was associated with low levels of depression and PTSD. Compared to Whites, Asian Americans were less likely to report high levels across mental health symptoms, and Hispanic/Latinos were less likely to report high levels of anxiety. These factors provide initial guidance regarding the clinical management for COVID-19-related mental health problems. 1. Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic that has upended the lives of individuals worldwide escalated in the U.S. beginning in March of 2020. Although research on acute and widescale stressors (e.g., natural disasters), de- monstrates severe implications for mental health (Kessler et al., 2008), there is no precedent for understanding the mental health effects due to COVID-19, as prospective studies investigating the effects of a pandemic are virtually non-existent. Fear of crime has been a major research topic over the past several decades, due in part to the growing awareness that the consequences of fear reach beyond feelings of personal anxiety, and also because it affects people from all strata of life. Although a plethora of research has been conducted on the subject in the Western world, however, there remains a paucity of such study in developing countries like Nigeria. Thus, this study has as its primary objective to examine the effect of organizational participation on fear of crime in Nigerian context. To test this, the study used data from Afrobarometer Round 6, 2015-2016 on the quality of democracy and governance in Nigeria. To achieve the objective of the study, several analyses were conducted. Specifically, the study utilized descriptive statistics and correlation. The finding indicates that organizational and community groups participation in Nigerian does not allay fear of crime in the neighborhood and at home.

Tel: 613 8345 1246; Fax: 613 8345 1806, Email: [email protected] Abstract Objective: to undertake a systematic literature review of risk factors for abuse in community-dwelling elders, as a first step towards exploring the clinical utility of a risk factor framework. Search strategy and selection criteria: a search was undertaken using the MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE and PsycINFO databases for articles published in English up to March 2011, to identify original studies with statistically significant risk factors for abuse in community-dwelling elders. Studies concerning self-neglect and persons aged under 55 were excluded. Results: forty-nine studies met the inclusion criteria, with 13 risk factors being reproducible across a range of settings in high-quality studies. These concerned the elder person (cognitive impairment, behavioural problems, psychiatric illness or psychological problems, functional dependency, poor physical health or frailty, low income or wealth, trauma or past abuse and ethnicity), perpetrator (caregiver burden or stress, and psychiatric illness or psychological problems), relationship (family disharmony, poor or conflictual relationships) and environment (low social support and living with others except for finan- cial abuse). Conclusions: current evidence supports the multifactorial aetiology of elder abuse involving risk factors within the elder person, perpetrator, relationship and environment. Despite a variety of definitions, two key concepts are that elder abuse involves an act or omission which results in harm to the older person, and that this occurs within a relationship of trust [1, 2]. Subtypes are described in Box 1. Overall prevalence studies indicate that 6% of older persons in the community are likely to have experienced significant abuse in the last month [3]. Typically, however, these studies produce widely divergent estimates, influenced by definition, culture and methodological issues. Theoretical explanations draw on the family violence literature and emphasise caregiver stress in the context of dependency, abuser psychopathology, inter-generational transmission of violence, external stress and social isolation [4, 5]. This review found a wealth of evidence which strongly and convincingly indicates that biological factors such as high intelligent quotient, executive functioning, skin conductance, and resting heart rate offer protection against criminal and antisocial behaviors. More importantly, the literature is supportive of the view that both risk and protective factors co-occur in the same variables, thus questioning the practice of classifying a set of variables as strictly risk or protective. Specifically, the risk–protective effect is contingent upon individual’s rating as high or low on the factor in question. It is recommended that researchers, academicians, and practitioners strive in their efforts to canvass other salient factors beyond the psychosocial factors as these factors can significantly and positively impact the risk assessment field, both theoretically and practically. This survey-design study examined the relationship between degree of news media viewing and state anxiety levels, as well as the potentially moderating role that optimism may play in that relationship. As an independent researcher I was responsible for every aspect of this study, under the supervision of my faculty advisor, Professor Joseph Trunzo PhD. I conceptualized the area of study, conducted a thorough literature review of existing relevant academic material, and created a research question and hypotheses. I then applied for and obtained approval from both Bryant’s Honors Program and Institutional Review Board. Using similar past studies as a reference, I created the survey format. I then recruited participants through communication with various departments and organizations on Bryant’s campus. I analyzed the data using SPSS software to determine Pearson’s correlation coefficients between several variables, as well as partial correlations when accounting for the optimism variable. I then wrote a paper on the study in addition to giving 2 presentations.

Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) as key structures in the development of psychopathology. The purpose of current research was studying the role of EMSs as the predictor of psychiatric symptoms including interpersonal sensitivity, psychoticism, paranoia, and hostility in the murderers jailed in Shiraz city. Methods: Eighty male jailed murderers were selected at hand sampling method. To gather the data, Demographic Questionnaire, Young Maladaptive Schemas Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF) and Symptoms Checklist- 90-Revised (SCL-90-R)(questions related to the symptoms of interpersonal sensitivity, psychoticism, paranoia, and hostility) were used. For data analysis, statistical methods of one way variance analysis (ANOVA), Pearson correlation and stepwise multiple-variable regression were used. Results: Data analysis using stepwise multiple-variable regression showed that strongest predictor related to any of interpersonal sensitivity, psychoticism, paranoia, hostility symptoms, listed respectively for these symptoms, were schemas of subjugation, emotional inhibition, entitlement/grandiosity , and emotional inhibition respectively. Conclusions: As a whole, it is concluded that the EMSs can predict psychiatric symptoms of interpersonal sensitivity, psychoticism, paranoia, and hostility in the murderers.

6. Results 1. The scores of the psychological factors are corelated with demographical and socio-economical characteristics of the subjects. Study areas and sample distributions 2008 = 500 subj 2009 = 1370 subjects 2005-2006 = 500 pers.

7. 1.a. The three factors have different variations, depending on the sex and age of the individuals. For both sexes, significant differences were obtained between age categories for Stress vulnerability factor and for External Locus of Control factor. Men develop an ascending trend of NonSelf-efficacy (or descending trend of efficacy) as they grow older, while women reduce their NonSelf-efficacy for the age of 30–49 category, after which they develop an ascending trend for it.
