2. Drinking & Driving – Motor vehicle crashes are the top cause of

deaths of adolescents between the ages of 15-20. The rate of fatal
crashes due to alcohol of adolescents between the ages of 16-20 is
twice the rate of alcohol related crashes between those who are 21
and older.
Suicide – Alcohol interacts with conditions such as depression and

stress which helps contribute to suicide. Suicide is the third leading
death people between the ages of 16-20 who drink alcohol.
Sexual Assault – Sexual assault, including rape, occurs most to

women in late adolescent and early adulthood. Research has
shown that alcohol contribution to the offender, victim or both
increases the risk of sexual assaulting someone or being sexually
assaulted.
High Risk Sex – Research has shown that high risk sex and alcohol

can lead to multiple sexual partners, having unsafe sex, receiving
and transmitting sexual diseases and teen pregnancies.

3. The brain keeps developing well into the 20’s. In your teens your still

developing key processes in your brain, exposing your brain to
alcohol during this time period can cause memory impairment and
impairment to other key processes.
 Alcohol induced learning impairments to the brain can cause
learning defects, academic and occupational impairments, and
memory impairment.
 In a study by Brown University kids who were dependent on alcohol
had a greater time not remembering words, shapes, and designs
after a 10 minute interval rather than the kids who are not
dependent on alcohol.

When asked how often one consumes alcohol

underage, 10% reported never, 5% reported once
a year, 20% said once a month, 15% said every
weekend, and 50% of students said every now and
then.
