Boyle Heights has been home to many immigrant groups over the years, including Jews in the 1880s, Russians known as Molokans in the early 1900s, Japanese immigrants in the late 1800s/early 1900s, and Mexicans in the early 1900s. These different immigrant groups have helped shape the cultural and religious diversity of Boyle Heights, introducing traditions like Judaism, Russian Orthodoxy, Buddhism, and Christianity. Today, Boyle Heights continues to be a hub for immigrant communities in East Los Angeles.
12. Judaism Torah scroll Star of David Judaism is the religion of the Jewish people, based on principles and ethics embodied in the Tanakh (bible) and the Talmud. According to Jewish tradition, the history of Judaism begins with the Covenant between God and Abraham (ca. 2000 BC), the patriarch and progenitor of the Jewish people. Judaism is among the oldest religious traditions still in practice today. Jewish history and doctrines have influenced other religions such as Christianity, Islam, Samaritanism and the Baha’i faith.
13. Molokans in East L.A The Molokans came to Boyle heights during the schismatic movement that shook the Russian orthodox church in the beginning of the modern era. They were exiled by the Russian government. Both Russian church and the state took an extreme attitude towards the schismatic movement
16. Molokan Religion The molokans are a “biblically centered” religious movement among the, Russian peasants, who broke away from the orthodox church in the 1550’s. They also rejected many of the traditional beliefs (held by Roman Catholic, Protestants, and Orthodox Christians), including the veneration of Religious icons, worship in cathedrals, the adherence toward saintly holidays, and the decisions of Synod sand Ecumenical Councils.
17. Japanese Americans In 1880 the Japan allowed its people to emigrate for the first time in 300 years. They came to Boyle heights because of the vast amount of farmland and job opportunities. they faced and overcame many obstacles that have changed their lives, struggle the prejudice the Americans acted out against them.
22. Buddhism Buddhism is a dharmic religion and a philosophy. It is also known as Buddha Dharma or Dhamma, which means roughly the "teachings of the Awakened One" in Sanskrit and Pali, languages of ancient Buddhist texts. Buddhism was founded around the fifth century BCE by Siddhartha Gautama, hereafter referred to as "the Buddha."
23. Mexicans in Boyle Heights In the early nineteen hundreds, the Los Angeles area was invaded by a massive wave of Mexican immigrants. The reason why Mexicans fled their homeland was because of the Mexican Revolution, which took place during the time period 1911- 192. One result of the war was the destruction of transportation and communication that the Mexican people had with other parts of the country.
25. Christianity Christianity is a monotheistic religion centered on the life and teachings of Jesus. Christianity began as an offshoot of Judaism, and includes the Hebrew Bible known to Christians as the Old Testament Christians believe Jesus to be the Son of God and the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament.
