Intro to Facebook Presentation – Facebook, How to Get Started Safely March Program for the Central Florida Computer Society – Sunday, March 16, 2014 at 2:00 PM Many people do not use Facebook for several reasons. Many are extremely concerned about their privacy and fearful of sharing information with the wrong people. Most of these people are not aware of how they can enjoy Facebook and limit their vulnerabilities and exposure. Hewie Poplock will present a program “Facebook, How to Get Started Safely” to CFCS on March 16. He will show the many favorable uses of Facebook, and how you can connect easily to many old & new friends and places. He will also show how to use Facebook’s settings to protect your information, while enjoying the service. He will show you how you can be a “lurker” or be active and yet be safe. There are more than 1.23 billion of Facebook active users. Of those 250 million play Facebook games. Over last 3 years, the number who are 55+ has exploded with +80.4% growth. As of Jan 2014, 32% of online seniors over 65 are using social networking sites and that number is about 15.6% of the Facebook users. This presentation is aimed at those not using Facebook. However, those who do use it will gain some insights and will update their settings knowledge, as well as be helpful to those around them who have been hesitant to join Facebook. The presentation will be at the General Meeting of The Central Florida Computer Society on Sunday March 16, 2014.

Facebook: It’s About the Money Source: Laudon, KC & Laudon, JP 2014, Management Information Systems: Managing the Digital Firm, 13 th Edn, Pearson Education Limited, England Over the course of less than a decade, Facebook has morphed from a small, niche networking site for mostly Ivy League college students into a publicly traded company estimated to be worth at least $50 billion. Facebook boasts that it is free to join and always will be, so where’s the money coming from to service 1 billion subscribers? Just like its fellow tech titan and rival Google, Facebook’s revenue comes almost entirely from advertising. Facebook does not have a diverse array of hot new gadgets, a countrywide network of brick and mortar retail outlets, or a full inventory of software for sale; instead, it has your personal information and the information of hundreds of millions of others with Facebook accounts. Advertisers have long understood the value of Facebook’s unprecedented trove of personal information. They can serve ads using highly specific details, like relationship status, location, employment status, favourite books, movies or TV shows and a host of other categories. For example, an Atlanta woman who posts that she has become engaged might be offered an ad for a wedding photographer on her Facebook page. When advertisements are served to finely targeted subsets of users, the response is much more successful than traditional types of advertising. A growing number of companies both big and small have taken notice: in 2011, Facebook made $3.2 billion in advertising revenue, which constituted 85% of its total revenue. The rest comes from the sale of virtual goods and services, principally Zynga games. That was good news for Facebook, which launched its IPO (Initial Public Stock Offering) in May 2012 and is expected to continue to increase its revenue in coming years. But is it good news for you, the Facebook user? More than ever, companies like Facebook and Google, which made approximately $36.5 billion in advertising revenue in 2011, are using your online activity to develop a frighteningly accurate picture of your life. Facebook’s goal is to serve advertisements that are more relevant to you than anywhere else on the Web, but the personal information they gather about you both with and without your consent can also be used against you in other ways. Facebook has a diverse array of compelling and useful features. Facebook’s partnership with the Department of Labour helps to connect job seekers and employers; Facebook has helped families find lost pets after natural disasters, such as when tornadoes hit the Midwest in 2012; Facebook allows active duty soldiers stay in touch with their families; it gives smaller companies a chance to further their ecommerce efforts and larger companies a chance to solidify their brands; and, perhaps most obviously, Facebook allows you to more e ...

This is what many job seekers should think about before they upload inappropriate content on a social networking websites. However, prospective employers think differently because what their employees do may have a bearing on how their workers perform, and what employees do on their off time may reflect poorly on the company’s image. Social networking can be helpful to both job seekers and employers; they can begin by starting something that's related to your career interest. Your blog could also help showcase your skills and track you job search. Here are few Do's and Don’ts of social networking. · Be careful of what you put online. With the power of cloud computing and enormous storage devices, search engines and social media channels are storing tons of information about you, and are they readily available online. · Be careful of what you write or post online because deleting an 'inappropriate picture' from your social media page like Facebook doesn't mean that the picture will not be found when searched. The social media channels have ultimate power to retain materials posted, and search engines can trace almost anything posted online. · Creating an online account and posting resumés on job sites like Dice, Indeed, Simplyhired, Beyond, TheLadders, Monster etc. exposes your online presence (your resume) to many recruiters and makes your resumé easily searchable. An online resume should include relevant industry standard 'keywords' to make it searchable. · Be consistent with your online presence information: be consistent with your experience, education or information your post on different channels, because that can easily bite you. Remember your online presence is a public entity——people can access it anytime——and misrepresenting your experience, education or simply being inconsistent can damage your online credibility. Do frequently "Google" yourself to see your online presence, you might be surprise with the outcome. · Do not use inappropriate images or party pictures as your LinkedIn profile photo or on your portfolio, becaus.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
