1. [Sample] Social MediaPolicy
In order to ensure that the [Company] adheres to its ethical and legal obligations, the Employee
is required to sign and comply with the [Company’s] Social Media Policy. The intent of this
Policy is not to restrict the flow of useful and appropriate information, but to limit risk to the
[Company’s] reputation, and legal and ethical standing.
This Policy is intended to clearly define social media and its use. However, please note that as
the field of social media is a rapidly changing one, and new tools and technologies may come
into use, the same standards still apply, regardless of whether these new tools and
technologies have been specifically named in the Policy.
Definitions
For the purposes of this Policy, social media is defined to include, but is not necessarily limited
to, any of the following:
o Blogs
o Chat rooms
o Online forums
o Social networks like Facebook, Twitter and My Space
o Video sites like YouTube
Employee use of Social Media
While employed at the [Company], it is typical that the employee might have the opportunity
to create, publish and share content using these and other online tools. This content could be
published in the form of blog posts, comments on blog posts, participation in discussions on
online forums, biographical information in an online user profile, a “user generated” video or
still image, or other content treated by the Employee and published online.
This Policy covers both the use of [Company] sponsored social media, such as the [Company’s]
blog and customer forums, as well as the use of any general, public social media not sponsored
by the [Company], in which the Employee’s name and/or affiliation with the [Company] may be
in any way identifiable.
Supplements Existing Employee Policys
Employee understands that the social media policy supplements but does not supersede the
[Company’s] standards of business conduct, employee manual, or any other policys the
employee may have entered into with the [Company].
2. The [Company’s] standards of business conduct outline rules of appropriate representation of
the [Company] for personal ethical behavior as to how Employees conduct themselves in the
public eye. The provisions of the standards of business conduct, including prohibitions against
disclosing proprietary Company information, maintaining one’s best efforts on behalf of the
Company and generally conducting oneself in an ethical way so as not to Compromise the
[Company’s] reputation and standing in the marketplace, apply equally to any use of social
media.
Prohibited Subjects
In order to maintain the company’s reputation and legal standing, the following subjects may
not be discussed by Employees in any form of social media:
o [Company] confidential or proprietary information
o Embargoed information such as launch dates, release dates and pending reorganizations
o [Company] intellectual property such as drawings , designs, software and patent
applications
o Disparagement of company’s or competitors’ products, services, executive leadership,
strategy and business prospects
o Graphic sexual references
o Reference to illegal drugs
o Obscenity to profanity
o Disparagement of any race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or place of national
origin
Employee hereby agrees to comply with the terms of this Policy and understands that failure to
do so may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.
