Here you can see the main equipment for the Kelly drilling. First the Kelly bar with the mast and the rotary drive on the left side. On the right side there are some pictures of different tools for removing the spoil which are attached to the kelly bar. Depending on the soil conditions augers, buckets or core barrels are chosen.
First of all, there are the Bored or Driven Piles for foundation piles or retaining structures. In the next chapter we will talk in more details about piling works.
I donโt know how many different method for the pile installation and how many different piles itself exist. But for sure this list can be continued for quite a lot of pages. We will limit the presentation to our standard bored piles. Generally we are offering to products for the piling works. First is the Rotary Drilling with Kelly and Second the Rotary Drilling using continuos flight auger. But what does this mean?
Also the pile installation has to be adopted to the soil conditions.
Here I have to tell a story: In the year 1958 Bauer had to construct a tied back retaining wall on a site in Munich. At that time anchors were installed in a completely different way then nowadays. First shafts had to be drilled behind the proposed line of the wall and excavated about ten meters deep. Then the anchors were drilled and finally fixed from the inside of the wall. Unfortunately on that site the crew missed the shafts when drilling the anchors. But the real problem started when the tried to withdraw the drill rods. This attempt failed and the forces to pull out the rods would have been even bigger then the required forces for the retaining wall. And by chance a new method was born - if the forces are so big, why not anchor the wall by leaving the drill rods in the ground. This was the beginning of the grouted anchor. Today the installation of grouted anchors is quite easy and not more than a standard procedure.
Ground improvement by the injection of bentonite cement slurry or chemical solutions is only efficient in granular soils and used for sealing systems. In our overseas department we are mainly offering grout curtains for the constructions of pits or dams to improve the permeability of rock. In the last years this field became more and more important.
